NonePrior to the release of Helldivers 2, soundtrack composer Wilbert Roget was considering moving on from writing orchestral music for games, he recently posted. The overwhelming community response to the soundtrack, however, has renewed his faith in orchestral composition for games. "Before Helldivers 2 came out I considered moving on from writing orchestral game music—it seemed like players were getting tired of it, it's absurdly difficult, time-consuming and expensive to produce, and I wanted to try new things", said Roget. Funny story: before #Helldivers2 came out I considered moving on from writing orchestral #gamemusic - it seemed like players were getting tired of it, it’s absurdly difficult, time-consuming and expensive to produce, and I wanted to try new things. (1/3) https://t.co/plQ1A5Zx4B November 29, 2024 "So imagine my shock at how enthusiastically players responded to HD2's score! From music-reaction vids to covers (even a full metal album?!), I'd never been more encouraged by listeners. For a traditionally-orchestral score, what I thought was impossible came true," he continued . "And so apropos of Thanksgiving, I'm profoundly grateful for the players, musicians and @ArrowheadGS devs for restoring my hope & passion for orchestral scoring. Award shows rightly have unique tastes, but knowing we’ve reached so many people is the greatest reward possible!" concluded Roget. Roget's post came in response to Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt, who noted that he thought it was silly that the soundtrack hadn't been nominated for any awards. Roget's post naturally inspired a whole new round of fans appreciating, and commenting on, the work he'd done on the soundtrack. Roget is a veteran composer, who has previously done work on Call of Duty: World War 2, Mortal Kombats 1 and 11, Pacific Drive, and Star Wars: Outlaws. He's also a TV composer who most recently worked on Netflix series Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance. As a bonus, earlier this year Roget actually shared an image of his very first concept sketch for Helldivers 2's main theme, "A Cup of Liber-Tea." At the time, he noted that it was much more aggressive and chaotic than the final version. I think we're all glad he kept at it. Science Don't miss out on the headlines from Science. Followed categories will be added to My News. Australia will be blessed with an enormous Geminid meteor shower this weekend, though the bright moon is threatening to put a stop to the show. The dazzling meteor shower is a welcome sight every year, passing over Australia in December when the planet moves through the debris left behind by 3200 Phaethon, an unusual asteroid that more closely resembles a comet. While comets are made up of ice, asteroids are rocky and several times more dense, burning brighter when they enter Earth’s atmosphere and become a meteor. The Geminids meteor showers occur annually in December. Picture: Asim Patel When is the Geminid meteor shower? This year’s Geminid meteor shower, which was named after the constellation Gemini, will be on peak display between Friday, December 13 and Sunday, December 15, though the shower itself will end on December 24. You can catch a pretty good glimpse of the shower on the morning of Friday, December 13. However, the best views will happen on Saturday morning. If you miss both of these early mornings, there will be a small window of opportunity on Sunday morning. Where can I see the Geminid meteor shower? Although the Geminid meteor shower is usually a dazzling show, this year’s shower will have to compete against the bright near-full moon, which may affect visibility. Luckily, there is an hour window where you can catch a glimpse of the stunning meteor shower, which is visible from every point in Australia, though residents further north will likely have better visibility. To get the best view, try to find a dark place that gives you optimal views of the sky uninterrupted by city lights, trees or buildings. You should also avoid using your phone, headlights and torches, as they could distort the view. This year’s meteor shower will have to compete with a bright almost-full moon. Picture: NASA What time can I see the meteor shower? The best time to see the Geminid meteor shower is between moonset and dawn, giving people about an hour to catch a glimpse. “The moonlight is so bright it hides all but the brightest meteors,” The University of Sydney astronomer Jonti Horner told the ABC. “It’s best to look in the early hours of the morning before dawn rather than looking before midnight.” Depending on where you live, moonset will take place on Saturday morning at the following times*: • Brisbane: 3.08am • Sydney: 4.00am • Canberra: 4.03am • Melbourne: 4.14am • Adelaide: 4.17am • Hobart: 3.45am • Perth: 3.30am • Darwin: 4.43am • All times are local time zones Originally published as A massive meteor shower is coming this weekend. Nigel Farage has issued a warning after the Government announced its housing plans earlier today. The strategy includes delivery targets for the number of new homes per year in each local authority area of England . The goal for the total number of new homes per year in the country as a whole has been set at 370,408. Many of these will be outside cities. The plan has been denounced by the Conservatives as a "war on rural England". Now, the Reform UK leader has listed his concerns - and has warned that people's quality of life will be directly impacted. Speaking on GB News, Mr Farage said he feared there will not be enough local infrastructure to accompany the new houses. He also hinted that the new homes could fill gaps in between England's villages. Mr Farage said: "Well, in common with the last government, there is a target to build one and a half million homes during the lifetime of this parliament. It's just that Labour seem to be rather more determined to do it because they are quite prepared to totally override local district, county councils, local unitary authorities. "They are just going to do it, and this includes redefinitions of what counts as Green Belt land, some of it potentially being designated as being grey belt. "Now, if this comes to disused garages or empty car parks or vacant pubs, well, you might say that all makes sense. But there will be, especially across the home counties, real genuine worry about what it means for green spaces, about what it means for gaps in between villages. ??????FARAGE ON LABOUR’S HOUSING POLICY “When all of these houses get built, there will be no more GPs, no more school places, no more roads.” Nigel Farage warns Labour’s plan will directly diminish quality of life for everyone. #HousingCrisis pic.twitter.com/vkDMmuW7vx "And by the way, when all these houses get built, there will be no more GPs, no more school places, no more roads. No, your quality of life, your quality of life will diminish directly as a result of this. "Now, whether they can actually meet the target, I very much doubt, without importing huge amounts of foreign labour, which, of course, in turn, will mean even more demand the houses. Right now, we have to provide one new home every two minutes just to keep pace with levels of immigration in this country. "So the truth of it is, we must build over Green Belt land all over our nation, just to house those that have come into this country in the course of the last 10 years. However, we have a serious housing shortage. What are we to do?" The Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer , said duiring a visit to Cambridge earlier today: "For years, we have had not enough houses being built. That means that individuals and families don’t have the security that they want." He added: “We are determined to break through that, to do what’s necessary. Of course we want to get the balance right with nature and the environment, but if it comes to a human being wanting to have a house for them and their family, that has to be the top priority."
HOTSPOT I won’t be able to forget 2024. I would gladly say goodbye to it, but would always remember it for many reasons. On a personal level, this is the year we marked an important family milestone: the birth in February of my sister’s first granddaughter Stella Avery. We were as happy as when CJ, the first grandson, was born six years before. I cried when I called my niece to congratulate her. Those were happy tears, but also sad tears because Mama is no longer around to see, hold, and take care of her first great-granddaughter. I immediately thought that it would have made Mama extra-happy to have a girl as her second “apo-sa-tuhod.” The arrival of CJ (and then Avery) made my sister into a “lola,” and we her two brothers, technically “lolos” since 2017. Also in the first quarter of 2024, I was personally introduced to the idea and practice of “maintenance” medicines, after the health center doctor told me that I needed them. By April, a young doctor who I “met” during the pandemic started to take care of me, made a diagnoses, and prescribed new medicines. I had to buy myself a pill box to keep track. By October, my current doctor ordered a diagnostic procedure, and the results determined that I should undergo a subsequent procedure in the soonest possible time. I was able to undergo the recommended procedure by the following month, thanks to help from friends and family, public funding, PWD benefits, and also PhilHealth. Both were done in a public hospital, under the auspices of awesome public sector doctors and nurses. I am grateful to them. I cannot deny that I got scared, but I thought it was better to take the doctor’s advice and prescriptions seriously, as well as those of my aunt who is a life-long nurse. It is something that runs in the family and I felt it was better to be pro-active about it. It may get worse if I left matters unattended. Our Tita Liwanag, one of Mama’s siblings, always checks on me. Many have seen or endured long lines at the Philippine Heart Center and East Avenue Medical Center that start at three or four in the morning. There must be better, more efficient, and more humane ways to avail of our right to healthcare. The national debates on PhilHealth, in particular, and medical assistance, in general are personal to many of us. We deserve a future where no one would have to beg, go around soliciting medical assistance, go bankrupt, or suffer and die unnecessarily, and where health services is free because healthcare is a right. The debates must be informed by the situation on-ground and the health needs of our people. The year 2024 is also a great, memorable year for Philippine politics, with both houses of Congress investigating Vice President Sara Duterte over her alleged misuse of confidential funds, and former President Rodrigo Duterte regarding the bloody drug war. We have a new, more competent Education secretary. The Marcos administration has said it will not stop the International Criminal Court’s investigation and would cooperate with Interpol in the event it implements an ICC arrest warrant. The controversial POGOs have been shuttered, and the Bamban mayor has been removed from office and now faces charges in court and before the Commission on Elections. Accused human and sex trafficker Apollo Quiboloy has been arrested and detained, after weeks of trying to evade arresting officers. Mary Jane Veloso has been repatriated from Indonesia and awaits a well-deserved pardon or clemency. Atom Araullo won a landmark legal victory against red-taggers Lorraine Badoy Partosa and Jeffrey Celiz. Pope Francis raised Kalookan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David, a fearless voice of justice, to the dignity of a cardinal, the first Filipino non-metropolitan and suffragan bishop to be so honored. In response to a clamor for new leaders, Makabayan offers a nearly-complete senatorial slate composed of 11 grassroots leaders and veteran progressive lawmakers. ACT Teachers and Gabriela are running for re-election, and Bayan Muna aims for a political comeback. The year 2024 is also the most brilliant in our Olympic history, thanks to Carlos Yulo’s two golds, Aira Villegas’ silver, and Nesthy Petecio’s bronze. No doubt, we faced many challenges too, with rising prices, inflation and cost of living, and with government scandals that humiliate us and deprive us of what we rightfully deserve. The small and big victories, personal and political, should give us hope in 2025. Let’s do everything to make things better for ourselves but especially for the kids like CJ and Avery.
