A desert oasis outside of Dubai draws a new caravan: A family of rodents from Argentina AL QUDRA LAKES, United Arab Emirates (AP) — A desert oasis hidden away in the dunes in the far reaches of skyscraper-studded Dubai has drawn a surprising new set of weary world travelers: a pack of Argentinian rodents. A number of Patagonian mara, a rabbit-like mammal with long legs, big ears and a body like a hoofed animal, now roam the grounds of Al Qudra Lakes, typically home to gazelle and other desert creatures of the United Arab Emirates. How they got there remains a mystery in the UAE, a country where exotic animals have ended up in the private homes and farms of the wealthy. But the pack appears to be thriving there and likely have survived several years already in a network of warrens among the dunes.
NoneAmid some Republican Party infighting, one GOP congressman is seeking to unite his caucus behind House Speaker Mike Johnson ahead of a pivotal vote that will decide whether he retains the gavel in 2025. Appearing Sunday on ABC's "This Week," Rep. Mike Lawler of New York said Republicans are "playing with fire" if they are considering replacing Johnson as speaker of the House, pointing to the chaotic removal of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy last year. RELATED STORY | Trump endorses Speaker Johnson to retain House gavel in 2025 "The fact is that these folks are playing with fire," Lawler said. "And if they think they're somehow going to get a more conservative Speaker, they're kidding themselves." "We can't get anything done unless we have a Speaker — including certifying President Trump's election on January 6th," Lawler added. "So, to waste time over a nonsensical, intramural food fight is a joke." RELATED STORY | Upcoming Congressional committees take shape on Capitol Hill Johnson won a unanimous voice vote during nominations for House GOP Conference leadership in November, but now faces a formal vote in the House when the next Congress begins in January. General Christopher Gwabin Musa, OFR, has been a transformative figure in Nigeria’s military landscape since he was appointed the 18th Chief of Defence Staff in June 2023. With his dedication to duty, patriotism, and people-oriented leadership style, General Musa has successfully evolved and transformed the Nigerian Armed Forces into a world-class institution, earning recognition globally for its effectiveness in addressing national security challenges. General Musa’s leadership has been marked by several outstanding achievements, including the successful rescue of 330 Chibok schoolgirls from Boko Haram terrorists and the accelerated amnesty program for repentant terrorists, which led to the surrender of over 47,975 terrorists and their families. He is not just reshaping the narratives but rewriting them. His fight against insurgency is model, impactful and dynamic, ever-evolving against the strategies and tactics emanating from the series of escalating security threats all over the world. A very forward-thinking and adroit strategist, General Christopher has shown mastery, dexterity and strategic insight in eliminating internal and external security threats, by evolving strategic insightful policies and building formidable resilience in the officers and men with very high capacity military readiness and enhanced operation capability and capacity, inter-agency coordination, and enduringly sustainable international collaborations. These fundamental and strategic policies also include the timely briefing and evolution of counter-strategies against all forms of insurgencies, criminalities against the State, terrorism, separatist tendencies and a highly formidable and robust intelligence-gathering mechanism capable of outmanoeuvring the strategies of the enemies. His role as the overall head of the Armed Forces also bestows on him the onerous responsibility of ensuring robust, formidable and responsive joint operational and integrative efforts of the Armed Forces. This collaboration has led to improved inter and intra-agency operations and resource optimizations, elimination of duplication of efforts, confidence building and the fostering of a united front against insurgents even among sister security agencies. Undoubtedly, General Musa’s wisdom, clout and congruence have led to various outstanding breakthroughs and victories in the areas of building the physical and social infrastructural capacities of the military, in such areas as the procurement of tools, equipment and modern sophisticated armaments, fortified and efficient state-of-the-art aerial surveillance units, and enhancement of cyber warfare capabilities. In the area of social infrastructures, he has empowered the forces with advanced technologies and skillsets through training and strategic partnerships which is central to this objective and a very robust motivational package. All these including consistent up-to-date training of personnel have greatly enhanced the Armed Forces in discharging its roles and also addressing the evolving complexities and growing international trends in asymmetrical warfare. General Musa’s role involves partnerships with international allies to augment Nigeria’s defensive apparatus, address capability gaps, and bolster the counterinsurgency repertoire. An apt and experienced soldier, his engagement of the minds and hearts of the insurgents, miscreants and urchins, coupled with other criminal elements with psycho-social measures has greatly led to successes in the de-radicalization programs, enhanced community engagement, and fostered socio-economic growth and development, thereby technically addressing the root causes of insurgency and discouraging recruitment into the camps of the insurgents as well reducing the allure of criminalities. This has progressively led to efforts aimed at countering the ideologies that feed insurgencies and separatist elements, which is as critical as the physical battlefield operations. His deft diplomatic engagements and multi-sectorial and multi-national counterterrorism initiatives have led to successes in reinforcing international solidarity and showcasing Nigeria’s resolve against terrorism, effectively rallying global support for combating insurgency, participation in multi-national counterterrorism initiatives, and navigating the security implications of international relations. At the sub-regional level, the CDS CG has increased advocacy for regional partnerships in the Lake Chad Basin and the ECOWAS region thereby solidifying collective action against shared security threats. He has also in a very tangible measure orchestrated the reformation of the Armed forces by making the Force amenable to civil governance, and evolving challenges as well as building capacity and capability to be able to navigate the complex nature of insurgencies as it relates to the undulating topography of the country. Equally strategic is his ability to fashion out and fuse a robust strategic vision, operational oversight, and inter-agency coordination aimed at eradicating the scourge of militancy and insurgency all over the country. Through an unabated and decisive commitment to proficiency, modernization, joint task formulation, and psychological operations, he can fashion a strategic and dependably sustainable bulwark against the tide of terrorism and insurgency contending against the nation. General Musa’s leadership has led to the evolution, and successful implementation of such operations as ‘Operation Hadin Kai,’ which was launched to replace the previous ‘Operation Lafiya Dole.’ This operation represented a shift in tactics, focusing on a doctrine that moves away from purely defensive posturing to more offensive operations aimed at decisively defeating the insurgents. Furthermore, there is the advancement of the concept of “Super Camps,” which consolidates military presence in strategic locations, thereby giving the forces the flexibility to launch swift and precise counterinsurgency strikes and also the added value of timely re-enforcement. Such tactics have reportedly led to several successful raids on insurgent camps and the neutralization of key figures in the groups. He has also re-enforced community partnership, through robust community engagement and intelligence gathering. Through this, there have been stronger relationships with local communities and collaboration with community leaders, the military has improved its intelligence-gathering capacities and capabilities, leading to more targeted and effective operations against insurgents. Another strategic reform is the enhancement of inter-agencies relationship which brings together various branches of the Nigeria security apparatchik to form a formidable whole. This is in recognition of the fact that the fight against insurgency is very complex. This integrated approach ensures that military operations are supported and complemented by the efforts of the police, intelligence services, and other security agencies. Interagency collaboration has been instrumental in disrupting the logistics networks of insurgents and curbing the flow of arms and funding to their operations. He strongly believes that if the police can get it right the war against insurgency will be over. A strong advocate of a working police system, General Musa has advocated a stronger police force capable of addressing the needs of the citizenry. He strongly also believes that a well-equipped police is a sure panacea for getting the problem of insecurity right in Nigeria. A man of intrinsic humility, humour, and selflessness at all times, it is generally believed that the tenure of General Musa CG, OFR, will provide the needed peace, stability and security that has escaped the nation for several decades. **Prince is a media practitioner and writes from Abuja

Carly Teller, the wife of Cleveland Browns offensive lineman Wyatt Teller, has opened up about her experience during the Ohio team’s most recent game. In a recent X/Twitter post shared after the Browns played against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday (December 8), Carly called out the Steelers fan base and revealed how she was treated during the game . “The fans in Pittsburgh today were so blatantly disrespectful to me and the Browns girls,” her post read. “I’ve never felt so attacked by people who I literally did nothing to. Very sad/embarrassing behavior.” Many people in the comments section agreed with Teller that some fans take their love for their favorite team a bit too far. “Sorry, you had to deal with these savages, Carly. I know you repped our city and team with class. It’s a shame you had to be exposed to such horrible people while simply cheering on your man. Us browns fans will always have your back,” one comment read . Another commenter agreed, writing : “That is classless. It’s a rivalry. You can chant at the opposing player/team. Browns fans do it too, but it stays on the field. That is disgusting to behave like that to players’ family members. Families are off limits.” Taking to her Instagram Story, Carly further detailed the incident in text over a selfie with her friend. “When you’re just trying to have a drink and watch your husbands at work but surrounded by Steelers fans who are screaming at you and the entire team,” the text read. However, the NFL player’s wife seemed to brush off the events of the game shortly after. She posted a follow-up message on X/Twitter, which read: “Anyway... back to my bubble in Cleveland to work on my little Christmas cards!” On Sunday, the Browns lost against the Steelers with a final score of 14 to 27. In a press conference , Wyatt addressed his wife’s social media comments about the “hostile environment” at NFL games. “So long as they don’t put their hands on a woman or crazy expose themselves or spit on my wife, you can say whatever you want,” he said. “You have to understand when you’re in a hostile environment, like, that’s what you’re going to get.” Wyatt clarified that the rivalry between the Steelers and the Browns dates back for years, though some fans end up taking it to the extreme. “I pray our fans are a little better, but I know the Dawg Pound can get a little rowdy,” he noted. “I’m not naive to the fact that this rivalry goes so far back. You’ve got to understand it’s hostile out there.” Following the team’s loss, the Browns were ultimately eliminated from receiving a spot in the NFL playoffs. The team will be facing off against reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, on Sunday, December 15.

The that it's fined the Timberwolves All-Star $100,000 for "using profane language during a live television interview." Per the league's statement, the NBA reached the six-figure fine amount "based in part on Edwards' history of using profane language during media interviews." The interview that drew Sunday's fine took place after Minnesota's 113-112 win over the Houston Rockets on Friday. In the game, Edwards capped a Minnesota rally from a 106-90 deficit with a go-ahead 3-pointer on a pass from Nickeil Alexander-Walker with 23 seconds remaining that stood as the game-winner. Garrett Wilson has experienced a lot of losing in his three seasons with the New York Jets. Ten losses in his rookie year. Ten last year. And 10 — and counting — this season. The latest came Sunday, when New York held a late lead at Miami but blew it and lost, something that has been an embarrassingly way too common theme. “When you’re up in the fourth quarter, all of a sudden it starts to feel like you have a losing problem,” the wide receiver said after . “You have a gene or some (thing).” It’s as good a theory as any at this point, especially for frustrated fans who have watched the Jets (3-10) . It’s the longest active drought in the NFL, a skid that also currently tops any franchise in the NBA, WNBA, NHL or Major League Baseball. “Losing hurts in general,” right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker said Monday. “So when you stack up those L’s, that’s obviously not where anybody in this building wants to be. That’s not anybody’s standard at all.” Instead, these Jets are setting dubious marks. They have lost a franchise-worst five games in which they held a fourth-quarter lead. And they’ve done it in three straight games. New York has nine consecutive losing seasons, also the longest active skid in the NFL. The Jets couldn’t even enjoy what interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Monday was Aaron Rodgers’ “best performance of the season.” The 41-year-old quarterback threw for 339 yards — ending a 34-game 300-yard passing drought in the regular season — and a 3-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams. It wasn’t enough. Not when the defense and special teams were having costly breakdowns. Again, with the Jets holding a late lead. And losing. “I wouldn’t say more frustrating, but probably equally frustrating,” Ulbrich said of the latest loss. “There has been, in my opinion, seven games that have come down to the end of the game and have been within one score and we didn’t get it done, and for a lot of different reasons when you look at the span of that seven games. “But we haven’t been good enough in those moments, and we need to be.” What’s working The passing game. The Jets’ offense with Rodgers hasn’t been nearly as dynamic through the air as most expected. But it has come alive lately, and probably not coincidentally with Rodgers overcoming some nagging leg injuries. The 300-yard game at Miami had Rodgers looking more like the vintage version of the four-time MVP. He was 27 of 39 passing with a season-high 8.7 yards per attempt, leading the Jets to a season-best 402 total yards. “I thought he did a very good job, and obviously the statistics would support that,” Ulbrich said. “He had an excellent day. I thought the offense had probably their best performance of the year.” What needs help Defense vs. the screen. Tua Tagovailoa made quick work of the Jets’ defense with a quick release and the Dolphins’ use of screen passes. Ulbrich counted 12 of them. “I’ve never been a part of a game like that,” he said. Ulbrich credited Miami for offsetting New York’s aggressive front and slowing it. “I’m taking a hard look at our screen defense,” he said. “We need to be better vs. the screens. Sometimes that’s from an execution standpoint and that’s sometimes from a call standpoint. So we’ve got to make sure that that type of day doesn’t occur for the defense. And I have a big part of that.” Stock up LB Jamien Sherwood. With C.J. Mosley going down with various injuries, Sherwood’s playing time has increased in his fourth season — and he has produced. He had 18 total tackles, including 13 solo, against the Dolphins and added to his team-leading season total. Sherwood became the first player in the NFL to have 18 or more tackles, two or more for losses and one pass defensed since Denver’s Alex Singleton did so in Week 6 of the 2022 season. Stock down Special teams. Anders Carlson made all four of his field-goal attempts, including a go-ahead 42-yarder with 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter. But his kickoff on the ensuing play was returned 45 yards by Malik Washington, helping set up Jason Sanders’ 42-yarder with 7 seconds remaining. Carlson acknowledged he was supposed to kick into the end zone for a touchback but mis-hit it. The coverage unit also fell flat in limiting Washington’s return. Injuries Ulbrich had no new information on the injuries to RT Morgan Moses, who hurt his left wrist in pregame warmups and left after the first half, or special teams ace Irvin Charles (knee). ... RB Breece Hall (knee) and CB Sauce Gardner missed the game, but Ulbrich said “I’d like to think they’ve got a chance” to play Sunday at Jacksonville. Key number 0 — The Jets had no hits on Tagovailoa, who threw 47 times. “As soon as he snapped the ball, the ball was gone,” Sherwood said. What’s next New York heads to Jacksonville next Sunday, when the loser will move up in the draft order. The Jets currently hold the No. 7 spot, according to , while the Jaguars (3-10) are at No. 5 entering Monday. ___ AP NFL:EVERY year I try out hundreds of health products, many of which I now couldn’t live without. NoneMaking charitable gifts towards the end of the year allows you to deduct the contributions on your tax return, but the crunch of the holidays can make it difficult to make thoughtful decisions about the non-profits you’d like to support. Donor-advised funds provide a long-term solution to this problem. Watch the replay of Kiplinger’s Spotlight On Year-End Tax Planning And Charitable Giving in association with the Jewish Communal Fund. Contributions to a donor-advised fund are tax deductible when you put the money in the fund as long as you itemize. But once you’ve contributed to the fund, you have an unlimited amount of time to decide which charities to support. You can make grants of nearly any size to eligible 501(c)(3) charities (usually a $50 minimum and no maximum). Plus, you can grant the money to charities whenever you wish— whether you want to help out quickly after a natural disaster, give out some money every year, or keep the funds growing in the fund over time and make a large donation all at once. The money can grow tax-free in the donor-advised fund’s investment pools—you can usually choose among several mutual funds—until you make the grants. In addition to cash, you can donate appreciated stock and other assets to a donor-advised fund. In that case, you’ll get a double benefit, because you’ll get a deduction for the contribution (assuming you itemize) and you won’t have to pay capital gains taxes on the sale of the assets. Because the donor-advised fund is a charitable account, it won’t pay capital gains on the sale of the assets either, increasing the power and reach of your contribution. Donor-advised funds have many of the same benefits as a family foundation but without the administrative complexities and high fees. Some families get multiple generations involved and use the funds to help teach their kids and grandkids about philanthropy. You can also name family members as successor advisors, continuing your charitable giving legacy for generations to come. Explore how a donor-advised fund through the Jewish Communal Fund can help you maximize your charitable impact with flexibility and ease. From tax benefits to building a philanthropic legacy, find out how you can make giving more meaningful for generations to come.
