litter genie As the dust settles on this latest controversy, it is clear that the old sins of Frenzied Donkey Productions have indeed come home to roost. The backlash against "Carnival of Carnage" serves as a cautionary tale for creators everywhere, highlighting the importance of thoughtful storytelling and responsible content creation in today's media landscape. The 1,500 guests who arrived at the Beverly Hills Temple of the Arts on Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills on a balmy mid-October evening had to pass a squadron of armed guards, go through a metal detector, and have their IDs checked before taking their seats inside the Saban Theater. The security was a fitting prelude to what they were about to see on the screen, the American premiere of , an Israeli-made documentary about the Oct. 7, 2023 terrorist attack on Israel that ignited the current Middle East conflict. The one-hour, made-for-TV Hebrew language film follows the story of a 53-year-old farmer and lawyer — his name is pronounced O-zehz — who put his own life on the line to save some 120 young Israelis who scrambled for safety as hundreds of Hamas terrorists shot, raped, tortured, killed and took hostage anyone in their gun sits at what had been a peaceful music festival. Driving an Israeli government issued Mitsubishi 4×4 truck (equipped with front and rear automatic cameras) assigned to him for his role as liaison to the Bedouin community, Davidian carried a single handgun and one clip of ammo for protection as he navigated back roads he once used for herding sheep. He made about 15 trips that long day to rescue terrified concertgoers and return them to their anxiously waiting families, with terrorist bullets often whizzing by his truck. Many in the Saban theater were visibly moved by the film, which re-traced Davidian’s actions on that fateful, terrible day and includes actual footage from his truck cams. “It was an amazing story,” said one audience member. “Especially where he had to go through and see all these people that were dead. What he did took a lot of courage.” And yet, despite the film’s universally positive reception — and its heroic, inspirational message — it’s unlikely this documentary by Israeli TV station Reshet 13 and others will ever be screened in America again, let alone broadcast or streamed on American television. “There are people who’ve got balls and there are people who ain’t got balls,” observes veteran producer Bill Mechanic of the current political climate in Hollywood, particularly when it comes to material touching on the Middle East. “So, the people afraid of their shadows, who live to protect their jobs, are not going to want to take a chance.” Those fears cast a wide shadow right now — and you can’t entirely blame the town for treading carefully around this subject matter. In many ways, it has become a third rail in the entertainment industry, a radioactive topic that has already burned a number of folks who have bravely – or foolishly – broached it. After it was learned in September that Hamas had killed six Israeli hostages, WME Agent Brandt Joel furiously wrote on a pro-Israel WhatsApp group, “Screw the left kill all.” Brandt quickly deleted the post and explained to his colleagues in a Zoom call he only meant “kill” members of Hamas, but the damage had been done: one of his top clients, Mahershala Ali, abruptly fired him. On the other side of the political divide, actress Susan Sarandon, who has a long history of activism, was dropped by her talent agency after she declared at an anti-Israel rally that Jews facing increased anti-Semitism are “getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim” in America. Polarized views on the subject have even made older content, released before the Hamas attack and Israel’s Gaza offensive, newly controversial. The Netflix series , for instance, which earned praise for its strong storytelling when it premiered in 2016, has faced criticism in its fourth season, which began in 2023, for glorifying the occupation of Palestinian lands. , a 2016 documentary delving into how the Israeli government supposedly uses its influence to shape American media, has drawn recent fire from both sides, with Jewish critics calling it anti-Semitic and Arabs claiming it distorts their cause. Likewise, the 2018 Egyptian spy thriller , set during the Six Day War in 1967, has been blasted by both sides for its portrayals. In such a cautious climate, it’s difficult to image how a new documentary like could possibly find a home in Hollywood. “We’re in a topsy-turvy world,” says Garth Ancier, a TV executive who has worked at NBC and Fox and headed BBC America. Ancier says he has both Jewish and Arab friends and what they have in common is that both are very narrow in their view, only seeing one side. “I try to talk them off that ledge,” he says. “But it’s hard. And it is getting harder because of the way it’s going down over there.” To be fair, has other issues apart from politics that make it a tough sell in Hollywood. For one thing, it’s a Hebrew language doc. For another, it’s extremely violent. “Obviously the content in this video is graphic,” says streaming media consultant Dan Rayburn. “So, you’re going to see more pushback from these streaming services. You’re showing dead bodies on the ground. That’s not really something they want on their platform. Even , which does some great stories like that, you’ll notice they’re not showing anything that graphic.” “And what about rating it, right?” he adds. “Is this NC 17? That gets very tricky when you’re talking about war and showing real life dead people on the street.” ’s producers are obviously aware of the uphill battle they face to get their documentary on screens in the U.S. But they’re currently working on assembling an “ ” version that they hope will stand a better chance. “We may change the narration to English or insert some new images so we might make a bigger impression in terms of selling it,” says Yossi Eli, an Israeli war correspondent who made without compensation. Eli says they are also considering a feature film, which may eventually be a “stand alone drama different from the documentary.” Efforts are also underway to submit for awards and festivals, led by L.A. filmmakers Dan and Zahara Israely, who produced , now airing on Amazon. Davidian, meanwhile, has returned to living his low-profile life with his wife and four daughters. He agreed to cooperate with this documentary at the urging of many of those he rescued, who he has kept in touch with. Several are quoted in the documentary expressing their thanks and calling him a hero. He also made a rare public appearance on Oct. 30 at a new awards ceremony held in the residence of Israel’s President Isaac Herzog. Davidian was among those who received the state’s highest civilian award for extraordinary heroism. Many of the honors were presented posthumously. Matt Duchene and Jamie Benn lead the Stars past the Blackhawks 5-1Zindigi brings digital innovation to e-commerce with COD payments KARACHI: Zindigi, in collaboration with PostEx, is solving real-world challenge faced by logistic companies by digitising cash-on-delivery payments in Pakistan, a statement said on Friday. Powered by Raast, the dynamic QR feature empowers riders to swiftly generate the QR from their PostEx application and can collect payments securely and seamlessly using multiple banking applications, revolutionising the logistics sector. With cash-on-delivery (COD) accounting for 90 per cent of e-commerce transactions in Pakistan, the reliance on cash has long posed inefficiencies for customers, merchants and delivery riders. Using cash comes with inherent risks, including the possibility of loss or theft in unpredictable situations. This innovative payment method ensures end-to-end cashless transactions, bringing unparalleled convenience to e-commerce shoppers while reducing the operational burden on merchants and logistics providers. This initiative is being launched as a pilot project across six major cities, with the goal of fostering trust in digital payments, reducing dependence on cash and paving the way for a cashless economy. The partnership introduces two groundbreaking projects that are set to redefine the logistics and e-commerce experience in Pakistan. The Wallet Integration initiative enables the seamless incorporation of digital wallets, allowing for fast and secure transactions, while the dynamic QR (digitised COD) project focuses on transforming COD payments. Chief business officer at Zindigi Atif Ishaque, added: “This partnership with PostEx reflects our vision of leveraging technology to enhance everyday financial interactions. By empowering customers with convenient, secure and cashless payment options, we are not only simplifying transactions but also contributing to the broader goal of financial inclusion and digital transformation in Pakistan.” CEO of Logistics at PostEx Jawad Mirza remarked: “Incorporating QR payments into the last-mile delivery process is a game-changer for the logistics industry. Partnering with Zindigi ensures this technology becomes accessible to all our customers. Using QR payments simplifies cash collection for riders, accelerates settlement for merchants, and provides customers with a seamless payment option at their doorstep. By digitising cash-on-delivery, we are driving the logistics sector towards a more tech-enabled ecosystem.”

The police are reporting that the teen boys seen in a video sexually assaulting a schoolgirl have been arrested. The video, which came to light sometime last week and has been circulated on social media platforms, depicts inappropriate behaviour involving the girl and multiple boys. The police are urging the public to refrain from sharing the video as they say this can further traumatise the victim and by extension affect the successful outcome of the case. The lawmen are also reminding citizens that sharing such content may constitute a breach of the Child Pornography (Prevention Act), and persons found guilty are subject to imprisonment for up to 20 years. Meanwhile, Gender Minister Olivia Grange and Minister of Education Dr Dana Morris Dixon, in a jointed media statement, have both condemned the incident. Grange said she is outraged and deeply concerned about the sexual assault of the young female student. She said it was a heinous act of violence which demands swift justice for the victim. "This is appalling and despicable and has no place in our society. It shows why as a nation, we must come together to protect our women and girls. It is heartbreaking to see this kind of violence, especially against our children, who should be nurtured and protected in every space they occupy." Grange called for all Jamaicans to take a stand against gender-based violence and emphasised the importance of fostering a culture of respect and safety for women and girls. "It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our children are safeguarded, both physically and emotionally, and that perpetrators of such crimes are held accountable.” For her part, Morris Dixon said this horrifying incident not only highlights the pervasive issue of violence against women and girls but also underscores the urgent need to address this scourge through education, awareness, and enforcement of the law. "The Ministry of Education stands ready to provide counselling and psycho-social support to the student, families and members of the community affected by this traumatic event. This type of violence being perpetuated by students cannot not be tolerated.” Follow The Gleaner on X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram @JamaicaGleaner and on Facebook @GleanerJamaica. The GE9X turbofan is already shattering records as the largest and most sophisticated turbofan ever built. With a record-breaking thrust of 134,300 pounds and an equally impressive core speed of 11,119 revolutions per minute (RPM), the engine stands out as one of the most significant leaps in aviation history. However, given its size and sheer power output, the question now arises: Which jets have the engine under their wings? When General Electric Company (GE Aerospace) first announced the GE9X in February 2012, it discussed a more robust successor to its already powerful GE90 turbofan. The engine promised aerodynamic efficiency, a higher bypass ratio, and a better engine pressure ratio while also being built from advanced, lighter, yet more impact-resistant materials. From lower NOx, CO2, and noise emissions to better fuel consumption, the aircraft engine supplier was looking to improve the GE90 in every way possible and all in time to put the engine on the next series of Boeing's 777X jetliners . GE had already worked closely with Boeing on several commercial aircraft, supplying engines for the 787, 777, 767, and 747. With the next installment of the 777 series, the 777X — the world's largest twin-engine passenger plane — GE was clearly out to make something special. The Boeing 777X has three variants: the 777-9, 777-8, and 777-8 Freighter. If GE's goal with the GE9X was to match the might of these aircraft, then they have succeeded. The GE9X is a dual-rotor high-bypass turbofan with 16 fourth-generation composite blades housed in a composite case. Its length and diameter are 220 inches and 121 inches, respectively. The engine weighs 22,000 pounds, which is heavier than the GE90, despite having fewer fan blades (six fewer blades than the GE90) and using lighter epoxy resin and ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials in its build. The GE9X is, by no doubt, one of the most powerful aircraft engines to date. Its first ground test was in April 2016, and its first flight was in March 2018 on a Boeing 747-400. In January 2020, GE and Boeing finally took a 777-9 equipped with two GE9X engines on its maiden flight. Currently, GE will be the only engine supplier for the Boeing 777X, thus making the GE9X exclusively for it. In November 2023 alone, Emirates had 460 orders of GE9X engines, with Singapore placing an additional 22 orders just a year before.

Stock market today: Wall Street mixed at the start of a holiday-shortened weekOptical illusions are fascinating games that challenge how our brains and eyes work together. Among these, a horse optical illusion quiz not only entertains but also offers insights into your personality. How many horses you spot can reveal surprising details about your character. Our sense of sight is one of humanity's most vital and beautiful gifts, shaping how we perceive the world. The way we interpret visuals, including optical illusions, can reveal secret aspects of our personality. How Many Horses Do You See? This unique optical illusion quiz is simple to take yet insightful. All you need to do is follow the game rules below and interpret the results: Game Rules: - Glance at the image for a second or two. - Count the number of horses you notice in the picture. - Match your count with the characteristics outlined below to uncover personality traits. What Your Horse Count Reveals About You 1. One Horse Spotting only one horse indicates that you’re a big-picture thinker. You view things holistically and are skilled at anticipating outcomes before others even begin planning. This ability makes you an excellent manager, as you’re adept at visualizing results. However, this strength can sometimes make you hasty in decision-making, leading to a lack of detailed evaluation. Your focus on the broader perspective can cause you to overlook finer details. To grow, focus on becoming more meticulous and avoid developing a laid-back approach. You have the potential to bring about meaningful change if you harness your natural skills thoughtfully. 2. Between 5 and 10 Horses If you saw between five and ten horses, you likely have a streak of perfectionism. You prioritize what matters and base your decisions on logic and reason. While you approach tasks sensibly, your work style can sometimes lack organization, making your journey to success less smooth than it could be. You’re always in motion—sometimes sprinting, other times crawling—but you never stop. This relentless drive helps you overcome failures and keep pushing forward. However, be mindful of overconfidence, as it can lead to overextending yourself. Accept that not everything has to be perfect, and allow yourself to celebrate small victories along the way. 3. 11 or More Horses Suppose you counted 11 or more horses, congratulations! You’re a perfectionist with keen observational skills. You notice details others overlook, making you a reliable and responsible individual. People enjoy working with you because they trust your sharp eye and dedication. However, perfectionism has its downsides. You may struggle to know when to stop refining a project, constantly thinking, “A little more improvement might help.” This mindset can lead to overthinking and dissatisfaction with outcomes. To balance your meticulous nature, consider incorporating relaxation techniques like yoga into your routine. Surround yourself with people who can remind you to set limits and take time to unwind. Why Should You Take the Optical Illusion Test Optical illusions like this one combine fun with self-discovery, offering unique insights into your personality. Whether you’re a big-picture thinker, a relentless go-getter, or a detail-oriented perfectionist, this test can help you understand and embrace your strengths while identifying areas for growth. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said Friday hospitals have only two days' fuel left before they must restrict services, after the UN warned aid delivery to the war-devastated territory is being crippled. The warning came a day after the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former defence minister Yoav Gallant more than a year into the Gaza war. The United Nations and others have repeatedly decried humanitarian conditions, particularly in northern Gaza where Israel said Friday it had killed two commanders involved in Hamas's October 7, 2023 attack that triggered the war. Gaza medics said an overnight Israeli raid on Beit Lahia and nearby Jabalia resulted in dozens killed or missing. Marwan al-Hams, director of Gaza's field hospitals, told reporters all hospitals in the Palestinian territory "will stop working or reduce their services within 48 hours due to the occupation's (Israel's) obstruction of fuel entry". World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Friday he was "deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of 80 patients, including 8 in the intensive care unit" at Kamal Adwan hospital, one of just two partly operating in northern Gaza. Late Thursday, the UN's humanitarian coordinator for the Palestinian territories, Muhannad Hadi, said: "The delivery of critical aid across Gaza, including food, water, fuel and medical supplies, is grinding to a halt." He said that for more than six weeks Israeli authorities "have been banning commercial imports" while "a surge in armed looting" has targeted aid convoys. Vowing to stop Hamas from regrouping, Israel on October 6 began an air and ground operation in Jabalia and then expanded it to Beit Lahia. Gaza's health ministry says the operation has killed thousands. The UN says more than 100,000 have been displaced from the area, and an official told the Security Council last week that people "are effectively starving". Issuing the warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant, the Hague-based ICC said there were "reasonable grounds" to believe they bore "criminal responsibility" for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare, and crimes against humanity including over "the lack of food, water, electricity and fuel, and specific medical supplies". A furious Netanyahu said: "Israel rejects with disgust the absurd and false actions and accusations made against it." He said the judges were "driven by anti-Semitic hatred of Israel". On Friday, he thanked his Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban for his show of "moral clarity" in inviting him to visit in defiance of the ICC warrant, which Orban branded "political". Hungary currently holds the rotating EU presidency. More from this section US President Joe Biden, whose country is Israel's top military supplier, called the warrants against Israeli leaders "outrageous", but other world leaders supported the court. Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris said Netanyahu would be arrested if he set foot in the country. Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday discussed efforts towards a ceasefire in Lebanon, the White House said. The ICC also issued a warrant for Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, saying it had grounds to suspect him of war crimes and crimes against humanity over the attacks on Israel that sparked the war, and including "sexual and gender-based violence" against hostages. Israel said it killed Deif in July, but Hamas has not confirmed his death. On Thursday, a UN representative said an Israeli raid on Palmyra in Syria this week was "likely the deadliest" by Israel on the country so far. On Friday, a war monitor said the strikes killed 92 pro-Iran fighters. Israel again bombed Gaza on Friday. In Gaza City, just south of Jabalia, one man who said he took his cousins to hospital after a strike urged "the world... to put an end" to the war. Belal, who gave only his first name, said 10 members of his family had been killed. At least 44,056 people have been killed in Gaza during more than 13 months of war, most of them civilians, according to figures from Gaza's health ministry which the United Nations considers reliable. Hamas triggered the war with the deadliest attack in Israeli history, which resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally of Israeli official figures. The war expanded to Lebanon in late September when Israel escalated air strikes against Iran-backed Hezbollah and later sent ground troops into southern Lebanon, after nearly a year of tit-for-tat cross-border exchanges which Hezbollah said were in support of Hamas. Lebanon says more than 3,580 people have been killed in the country, most of them since late September. Israeli strikes again targeted Hezbollah's south Beirut stronghold and south Lebanon on Friday, the official National News Agency said. Thousands of UN peacekeepers are based in southern Lebanon and have reported coming under attack numerous times, blaming both Israel and "non-state" actors. On Friday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said Hezbollah was probably behind a rocket attack that lightly wounded four Italian peacekeepers. bur-ami/srm/kir

AP Sports SummaryBrief at 6:25 p.m. ESTAt a town hall meeting with the bureau workforce, Mr Wray said he would be stepping down “after weeks of careful thought”. Mr Wray’s intended resignation is not unexpected considering that Mr Trump had picked Mr Patel for the role in his new administration. Mr Wray had previously been named by Mr Trump and began the 10-year term — a length meant to insulate the agency from the political influence of changing administrations — in 2017, after Mr Trump fired then-FBI director James Comey. Mr Trump had demonstrated his anger with Mr Wray on multiple occasions, including after Mr Wray’s congressional testimony in September. “My goal is to keep the focus on our mission — the indispensable work you’re doing on behalf of the American people every day,” Mr Wray told agency employees. “In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.” Mr Wray continued: “It should go without saying, but I’ll say it anyway — this is not easy for me. I love this place, I love our mission, and I love our people — but my focus is, and always has been, on us and doing what’s right for the FBI.” Mr Wray received a standing ovation following his remarks before a standing-room-only crowd at FBI headquarters and some in the audience cried, according to an FBI official who was not authorised to discuss the private gathering and spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press. Mr Trump applauded the news on social media, calling it “a great day for America as it will end the weaponisation of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice” and saying that Mr Patel’s confirmation will begin “the process of Making the FBI Great Again”. If confirmed by the Senate, Mr Patel would herald a radical leadership transformation at the nation’s premier federal law enforcement agency. He has advocated shutting down the FBI’s Washington headquarters and called for ridding the federal government of “conspirators”, raising alarm that he might seek to wield the FBI’s significant investigative powers as an instrument of retribution against Mr Trump’s perceived enemies. Mr Patel said in a statement Wednesday that he was looking forward to “a smooth transition. I will be ready to serve the American people on day one”.The Kingston Frontenacs, quite simply, are on fire. On Sunday, the club finished off a perfect weekend, winning for the third time in less than 48 hours, this time 5-1 over the North Bay Battalion. The win was Kingston’s 12 th in its last 15 games. Sunday’s win, which featured the first Ontario Hockey League start and win by future top goaltender Gavin Betts, followed an impressive 4-1 road win in Brantford on Saturday night and a thrilling shootout win over Peterborough on Friday night at Slush Puppie Place. On Sunday, Tuomas Uronen scored twice and Betts made 29 saves in his debut as the Fronts swept a third straight game from the Battalion, who they’ve dominated in all three contests so far. Previously, Kingston clobbered North Bay 9-0 in Kingston and 6-2 in North Bay. Jacob Battaglia, with his team-leading 16 th of the season, Gage Heyes, with his eighth, and Cedrick Guindon, with his 14 th , also scored for Kingston. Betts saw his bid for a shutout in his debut snapped on a late goal by Shamar Moses, whose shot eluded Betts with just over two minutes remaining. North Bay netminder Mike McIvor faced a barrage of shots on the night, stopping 32 of 37 shots in the loss. NOTES: Kingston entered Sunday’s game against the Battalion having won three straight against North Bay, including two straight at home... the last time the Frontenacs swept a 3-in-3 weekend was Jan. 21-23, 2022, versus Hamilton, Niagara and Oshawa. ST. LOUIS (AP) — Fourteen North Korean nationals have been indicted in a scheme using information technology workers with false identities to contract with U.S. companies — workers who then funneled their wages to North Korea for development of ballistic missiles and other weapons, the head of the FBI office in St. Louis said Thursday. The scheme involving thousands of IT workers generated more than $88 million for the North Korean government, Ashley T. Johnson, special agent in charge of the St. Louis FBI office, said at a news conference. In addition to their wages, the workers stole sensitive information from companies or threatened to leak information in exchange for extortion payments, Johnson said. Victims included defrauded companies and people whose identities were stolen from across the U.S., including Missouri, Johnson said. The indictments were filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis. All 14 people face wire fraud, money laundering, identity theft and other charges. Most of those accused are believed to be in North Korea. Johnson acknowledged that bringing them to justice will be difficult. To help, the U.S. Department of State is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to any of the suspects. RELATED COVERAGE Taiwan’s leader calls on China to refrain from threats ahead of expected military drills Who is the South Korean president who imposed martial law? California man charged with shipping weapons to North Korea Federal authorities said the scheme worked like this: North Korea dispatched thousands of IT workers to get hired and work remotely or as freelancers for U.S. companies. The IT workers involved in the scheme sometimes used stolen identities. In other instances, they paid Americans to use their home Wi-Fi connections, or to pose in on-camera job interviews as the IT workers. Johnson said the FBI is going after those “domestic enablers,” too. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Johnson said. “If your company has hired fully remote IT workers, more likely than not, you have hired or at least interviewed a North Korean national working on behalf of the North Korean government,” Johnson said. The Justice Department in recent years has sought to expose and disrupt a broad variety of criminal schemes aimed at bolstering the North Korean regime, including its nuclear weapons program. In 2021, the Justice Department charged three North Korean computer programmers and members of the government’s military intelligence agency in a broad range of global hacks that officials say were carried out at the behest of the regime. Law enforcement officials said at the time that the prosecution highlighted the profit-driven motive behind North Korea’s criminal hacking, a contrast from other adversarial nations like Russia, China and Iran that are generally more interested in espionage, intellectual property theft or even disrupting democracy. In May 2022, the State Department, Department of the Treasury, and the FBI issued an advisory warning of attempts by North Koreans “to obtain employment while posing as non-North Korean nationals.” The advisory noted that in recent years, the regime of Kim Jong Un “has placed increased focus on education and training” in IT-related subjects. In October 2023 , the FBI in St. Louis announced the seizure of $1.5 million and 17 domain names as part of the investigation. The indictments announced Tuesday were the first stemming from the investigation. Johnson urged companies to thoroughly vet IT workers hired to work remotely. “One of the ways to help minimize your risk is to insist current and future IT workers appear on camera as often as possible if they are fully remote,” she said. Officials didn’t name the companies that unknowingly hired North Korean workers.

the genie of the lamp
the genie of the lamp OLD TRAFFORD chiefs are locked in a blame game over who was responsible for their summer shambles. Manchester United have become a laughing stock over their treatment of former boss Erik ten Hag. The club’s recruitment strategy has also faced scrutiny following another summer splurge of nearly £180million. Red Devils co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Co were set to get rid of Ten Hag after the FA Cup final. They ended up extending his contract and employing a new coaching team around him following their Wembley win over City. But the Dutchman was axed after just nine Prem games this season with United languishing down in 14th in the table. The former Ajax chief’s staff were also dismissed — all with sizeable pay-offs. It cost around £15m to sack Ten Hag alone, while they had to shell out another £10m to bring Portuguese Ruben Amorim in from Sporting Lisbon, including an extra fee so that he could cut short his notice period. It has been a bumpy start for Ratcliffe, who bought a 27.7 per cent stake in United in February and was charged with running the football side of the club. FOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALS The British billionaire, 72, appointed a new senior management team, including Sir Dave Brailsford , Omar Berrada, Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox. But so far, the jury is out on their summer transfer deals. The likes of forward Joshua Zirkzee, at £36.5m, and £38.5m centre-back Matthijs de Ligt have struggled to find their feet. Now, tough questions are being asked internally about who bears the most responsibility for what went wrong with their planned squad revamp.Matthew McConaughey helps Dick’s Sporting Goods spread holiday cheer across Texas

Apostolic sect leader Madzibaba Ishmael Chokurongerwa has dismissed DNA results presented in court, arguing that the tests are flawed and should not be admitted as evidence. Chokurongerwa, who is facing charges of raping and impregnating three minor girls at his Nyabira shrine, appeared before Harare magistrate Estere Chivasa on Wednesday. The DNA tests, conducted by the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), allegedly link him to the pregnancies, but Chokurongerwa insists the process lacked integrity. He contends that the DNA samples were collected in violation of a High Court order, which had set specific conditions for the time, place, and supervision of the sampling process. "A tainted process cannot produce an untainted result. The DNA results are tainted and ought not to be admitted into evidence," he argued. The sect leader further claimed that procedural safeguards to ensure the authenticity of the samples were not followed, thereby compromising the entire forensic process. Additionally, Chokurongerwa denied the rape allegations, asserting that he never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with the complainants. He also claimed that the alleged victims did not voluntarily file complaints with the police, suggesting indoctrination may have influenced their silence during initial interviews. The State alleges that Chokurongerwa abused his position of power within the church to exploit the minors. Investigators say the victims, owing to religious indoctrination, were reluctant to disclose the identity of their abuser when initially questioned by police. Magistrate Chivasa has postponed the trial to January 16, 2025, to allow for further proceedings. The case has sparked widespread public interest, with many calling for justice for the victims while others question the transparency of evidence collection processes in sensitive cases like this.

Get ready for yet another GPU shortage, as Nvidia has warned about potential shortages in the current quarter. Although the company’s third-quarter revenue saw a healthy growth, in its recent earnings call , company Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress said that the fourth-quarter revenue is expected to decline sequentially due to supply constraints. The anticipated GPU shortage could potentially stem from a strategic shift in production to prepare for the next-generation RTX 50-series “Blackwell” GPUs, slated for release in 2025. This supply transition, coupled with surging gaming and professional use-case demand, seems to have left the company in a tight spot. Nvidia acknowledged its struggle to maintain stock for both gamers and enterprise customers, emphasizing its ongoing efforts to expand manufacturing capacity. For gamers, this warning means longer wait times and potential price surges for Nvidia’s GPUs during the holiday season. Retailers may face limited inventory of RTX 40-series models, especially premium cards like the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090 . This challenge arrives as gamers increasingly seek powerful hardware for 4K gaming and emerging AI-enhanced features, making GPU availability crucial. Nvidia remains optimistic about a recovery though, projecting improved supply by early 2025 as production ramps up. Analysts note that the company’s dual strategy — balancing gaming and enterprise segments — has proven profitable but may exacerbate short-term shortages. Additionally, the ramp-up to the RTX 50-series could generate renewed interest among gamers, potentially easing pressure on older product lines. Despite these challenges, Nvidia continues to solidify its leadership in both gaming and AI markets. The company’s GPUs remain a cornerstone of the gaming ecosystem and the driving force behind advancements in generative AI technologies. However, gamers should brace for a challenging quarter in obtaining sought-after GPUs until supply levels stabilize. On the positive side, Nvidia’s third-quarter revenue surged 94% year-over-year to $35 billion, with net income rising 109% to $19.3 billion. The data center segment drove this growth, contributing $30.7 billion (87.7% of total revenue), fueled by strong demand for H100/H200 and upcoming Blackwell GPUs.Old friends Corey Conners and Brooke Henderson usually have to keep tabs on each other from afar, but this week they'll get to see one another up close. Conners and Henderson will team up once again at the Grant Thornton Invitational, a unique event where some of the best golfers from the PGA and LPGA Tours compete as pairs. The tournament is quickly becoming an annual reunion for the two graduates of Golf Canada's junior program. "Since turning professional, our careers have gone separate ways, and we haven't been able to cross paths too much," said Conners, who finished the men's season 39th on the FedEx Cup standings. "I'm always cheering her on from afar, and always have my eye on the LPGA Tour leaderboard when she's playing." Henderson, likewise, has been keeping tabs on Conners's exploits. "It's just been really fun to watch his career and cheer him on," said Henderson, who finished 13th in the women's tour's rankings. "I think this event has reconnected us, in a way, and it's been really special and great to be able to know his family and just to watch this game and be his partner here is really cool." Both were on Team Canada back in 2013 when they won the Copa de las Americas along with Albin Choi and Augusta James. Conners and Henderson also represented Canada at the last two Olympics but due to COVID-19 restrictions they didn't get to interact at the Tokyo Games in 2021. The men's and women's tournaments were on different weeks at the Paris Games this past summer. The two Canadians finished second at the inaugural Grant Thornton Invitational last year with a combined score of 25 under, a shot behind New Zealand's Lydia Ko and Australia's Jason Day. "It's been great to be able to share some experiences like the Olympics and this event last year and spending more time together has been awesome," said Conners, who is from Listowel, Ont. "She's this amazing person, amazing golfer, and a fun partner at this event." The stacked leaderboard will see 16 pairs tee off on Friday at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla. American Tony Finau withdrew from the event on Wednesday afternoon. He was replaced as top-ranked Nelly Korda's partner by Daniel Berger. "I feel like we make a great team, and I'm excited for Friday to tee it up and hopefully make some birdies and be inspired by (Conners's) great shots," said Henderson, who is from Smiths Falls, Ont. PGA TOUR — Six Canadians are vying for a PGA Tour card at the PGA Tour Q-School this week. Roger Sloan of Merritt, B.C., Edmonton's Wil Bateman, Myles Creighton of Digby, N.S., Toronto's Sebastian Szirmak, as well as Matthew Anderson and Sudarshan Yellamaraju of Mississauga, Ont., will all be in the field at Dye's Valley Course and Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., this week. LPGA TOUR — Hamilton's Alena Sharp and Maude-Aimee Leblanc of Sherbrooke, Que., both earned full status on the LPGA Tour for 2025 after solid showings at the final qualifying stage of the Q-Series on Monday. Sharp tied for 21st at 7 under and Leblanc tied for 24th at 6 under. The top 25 finishers in the tournament earned their status. GOLFZON TOUR — A team of five golfers from the Greater Toronto Area will be competing in the GOLFZON Tour, a golf simulator league that features 12 teams from North America and the United Kingdom. Team Toronto will play its GOLFZON Tour quarterfinal match at a Golfplay location in Waterloo, Ont., on the virtual Old Course at St. Andrews against Team Orlando on Dec. 19. Weak productivity, teamed with an ageing population, raises questions over the long-term growth prospects of Ireland as well as the broader EU, the governor of the Central Bank of Ireland Gabriel Makhlouf has warned. Speaking at a dinner organised by the UK Society of Professional Economists, Mr Maklhouf pointed out that Ireland’s population is “ageing at a faster rate” than almost any other European country after having dependency rates significantly below other EU member states for decades. An ageing population impacts growth in two ways — it means more people are moving out of the workforce while more Government money is spent on healthcare and pensions. These additional spending requirements could have a knock-on impact of potentially crowding out public investment spending. However, Mr Makhlouf said various policies and new technologies mean that labour force participation — such as working beyond retirement age or boosting female labour force participation — can offset some of these effects. What's your view on this issue? You can tell us here Citing data from the European Commission, Mr Makhlouf said that the estimated annual total cost of ageing between 2022 and 2070 will be around 5% of gross domestic product in Ireland and 2% in the euro area “with most of this frontloaded in the next 20 years”. “These are substantial cost increases, when we compare with public investment rates of between 2% and 4% over recent decades,” he said. Mr Makhlouf said that addressing the demographic challenge is not just about looking at alternative sources of growth but also “re-assessing how we think about retirement and human capital accumulation over the life cycle”. “If people choose to work longer, it could also up-end how we traditionally think about human capital accumulation and individual productivity growth, especially in older-age working groups,” he said. “If a middle-aged worker instead expects to be working into their 70s, this could incentivise education and training throughout their working life, rather than the general practice of it ending in their 20s.” Mr Makhlouf said that increased longevity as a result of healthier lifestyles presents the opportunity for people to work longer if they choose to. “Policies to incentivise working longer, alongside promotion of lifelong learning, need to be part of our thinking,” he said. In the face of these demographic headwinds, Mr Makhlouf said there is an “even greater emphasis” on productivity to deliver growth, but in this area, Europe is “weak” and has been “for some years”. “Europe is at a pivotal moment in its economic development,” he said. "The tangle of ageing populations with weak productivity growth raises questions about the long-term growth outlook." In terms of addressing sluggish EU productivity growth, Mr Makhlouf noted that there was a recent report from former president of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi on this issue, which he said “present a menu of policy options to help boost competitiveness”. He added that policies that seek to boost productivity must be complemented by the completion of the EU single market, such as through the “long-touted capital markets union”.NoneIf you missed out on Best Buy's and Target's Switch console bundle deals, you have another chance to save at Walmart. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts landed on the team’s injury report Wednesday, but it doesn’t look like anything that will impact his availability for Sunday’s game against the Steelers. Hurts is listed as a full participant in practice and a left finger issue is given as the reason for his appearance. Safety Sydney Brown (knee) was the only player to miss practice for injury reasons. Right guard Mekhi Becton, wide receiver A.J. Brown, left guard Landon Dickerson, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson, cornerback Darius Slay, and edge rusher Josh Sweat all had rest days. Right tackle Lane Johnson did not practice for personal reasons. The Eagles listed safety Reed Blankenship (concussion), defensive tackle Jalen Carter (shoulder), wide receiver Britain Covey (neck), and cornerback Cooper DeJean (rest) as limited. Linebacker Nakobe Dean (elbow) was the team’s other full participant.

Montana’s Attorney General Austin Knudsen said he has received a request from the RCMP seeking to conduct surveillance at two upcoming gun shows in his state—a request that he strongly opposes. Knudsen said the Division of Criminal Investigation in the Montana Department of Justice recently received the RCMP request regarding gun shows in Bozeman and Kalispell. Knudsen said he will try to prevent the RCMP from coming. The Republican AG said he spoke to the local sheriffs where the gun shows will be held and said everyone involved is in agreement. Knudsen said the surveillance is “inappropriate” and “probably illegal” and that he will consider suing the U.S. federal government if necessary. Any RCMP action in the U.S. would be coordinated with a federal law enforcement agency such as the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) or the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The Epoch Times reached out to the RCMP and the ATF for comment but didn’t immediately hear back. Knudsen mentioned an incident two years prior when an undercover RCMP officer had been reportedly conducting surveillance at a gun show in Great Falls, Montana, as part of joint work with the ATF. Cascade County Sheriff Jesse Slaughter said his outfit had not been notified the U.S. and Canadian federal agencies were conducting an operation. Slaughter said the situation could have turned into an “international incident.” Much of Canada’s gun crime can be traced to firearms sourced from the United States. For example, 70 percent of all traced guns used in crimes in Ontario in 2021 came from the United States, according to the data from the Ontario police’s Firearms Analysis and Tracing Enforcement (FATE) program. Montana is a northern U.S. state that shares a border with B.C., Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Montana has relatively relaxed gun laws, with no licence required to purchase long guns and handguns. Carrying a firearm, even concealed, is also not illegal, unless the individual is legally prohibited from possession. Knudsen, a firearms aficionado, criticized the Canadian federal political leadership during his radio interview and invited Saskatchewan and Alberta residents to “move down here.” “I feel really bad for our neighbours to the north,” he said. What happens next with Alex Jones' Infowars? By HILLEL ITALIE NEW YORK (AP) — Even through a year of nonstop news about elections, climate change, protests and the price of eggs, there was still time to read books. Related Articles The Five Minute Read Hundreds of bookstore staffers receive holiday bonuses from author James Patterson Nikki Giovanni, poet and literary celebrity, has died at 81 Percival Everett, 2024 National Book Award winner, rereads one book often Gift books for 2024: What to give, and what to receive, for all kinds of readers U.S. sales held steady according to Circana, which tracks around 85% of the print market, with many choosing the relief of romance, fantasy and romantasy. Some picked up Taylor Swift’s tie-in book to her blockbuster tour, while others sought out literary fiction, celebrity memoirs, political exposes and a close and painful look at a generation hooked on smartphones. Here are 10 notable books published in 2024, in no particular order. Asking about the year’s hottest reads would basically yield a list of the biggest hits in romantasy, the blend of fantasy and romance that has proved so irresistible fans were snapping up expensive “special editions” with decorative covers and sprayed edges. Of the 25 top sellers of 2024, as compiled by Circana, six were by romantasy favorite Sarah J. Maas, including “House of Flame and Shadow,” the third of her “Crescent City” series. Millions read her latest installment about Bryce Quinlan and Hunter Athalar and traced the ever-growing ties of “Maasverse,” the overlapping worlds of “Crescent City” and her other series, “Throne of Glass” and “A Court of Thorns and Roses.” If romantasy is for escape, other books demand we confront. In the bestselling “The Anxious Generation,” social psychologist Jonathan Haidt looks into studies finding that the mental health of young people began to deteriorate in the 2010s, after decades of progress. According to Haidt, the main culprit is right before us: digital screens that have drawn kids away from “play-based” to “phone-based” childhoods. Although some critics challenged his findings, “The Anxious Generation” became a talking point and a catchphrase. Admirers ranged from Oprah Winfrey to Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee, who in a letter to state legislators advocated such “commonsense recommendations” from the book as banning phones in schools and keeping kids off social media until age 16. Bob Woodward books have been an election tradition for decades. “War,” the latest of his highly sourced Washington insider accounts, made news with its allegations that Donald Trump had been in frequent contact with Russian leader Vladimir Putin even while out of office and, while president, had sent Putin sophisticated COVID-19 test machines. Among Woodward’s other scoops: Putin seriously considered using nuclear weapons against Ukraine, and President Joe Biden blamed former President Barack Obama, under whom he served as vice president, for some of the problems with Russia. “Barack never took Putin seriously,” Woodward quoted Biden as saying. Former (and future) first lady Melania Trump, who gives few interviews and rarely discusses her private life, unexpectedly announced she was publishing a memoir: “Melania.” The publisher was unlikely for a former first lady — not one of the major New York houses, but Skyhorse, where authors include such controversial public figures as Woody Allen and Trump cabinet nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. And its success was at least a minor surprise. Melania Trump did little publicity for the book, and offered few revelations beyond posting a video expressing support for abortion rights — a break from one of the cornerstones of GOP policy. But “Melania” still sold hundreds of thousands of copies, many in the days following her husband’s election. Taylor Swift was more than a music story in 2024. Like “Melania,” the news about Taylor Swift’s self-published tie-in to her global tour isn’t so much the book itself, but that it exists. And how well it sold. As she did with the “Eras” concert film, Swift bypassed the established industry and worked directly with a distributor: Target offered “The Eras Tour Book” exclusively. According to Circana, the “Eras” book sold more than 800,000 copies just in its opening week, an astonishing number for a publication unavailable through Amazon.com and other traditional retailers. No new book in 2024 had a better debut. Midnight book parties are supposed to be for “Harry Potter” and other fantasy series, but this fall, more than 100 stores stayed open late to welcome one of the year’s literary events: Sally Rooney’s “Intermezzo.” The Irish author’s fourth novel centers on two brothers, their grief over the death of their father, their very different career paths and their very unsettled love lives. “Intermezzo” was also a book about chess: “You have to read a lot of opening theory — that’s the beginning of a game, the first moves,” one of the brothers explains. “And you’re learning all this for what? Just to get an okay position in the middle game and try to play some decent chess. Which most of the time I can’t do anyway.” Lisa Marie Presley had been working on a memoir at the time of her death , in 2023, and daughter Riley Keough had agreed to help her complete it. “From Here to the Great Unknown” is Lisa Marie’s account of her father, Elvis Presley, and the sagas of of her adult life, notably her marriage to Michael Jackson and the death of son Benjamin Keough. To the end, she was haunted by the loss of Elvis, just 42 when he collapsed and died at his Graceland home while young Lisa Marie was asleep. “She would listen to his music alone, if she was drunk, and cry,” Keough, during an interview with Winfrey, said of her mother. Meanwhile, Cher released the first of two planned memoirs titled “Cher” — no further introduction required. Covering her life from birth to the end of the 1970s, she focuses on her ill-fated marriage to Sonny Bono, remembering him as a gifted entertainer and businessman who helped her believe in herself while turning out to be unfaithful, erratic, controlling and so greedy that he kept all the couple’s earnings for himself. Unsure of whether to leave or stay, she consulted a very famous divorcee, Lucille Ball, who reportedly encouraged her: “F— him, you’re the one with the talent.” A trend in recent years is to take famous novels from the past, and remove words or passages that might offend modern readers; an edition of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” cuts the racist language from Mark Twain’s original text. In the most celebrated literary work of 2024, Percival Everett found a different way to take on Twain’s classic — write it from the perspective of the enslaved Jim. “James,” winner of the National Book Award, is a recasting in many ways. Everett suggests to us that the real Jim was nothing like the deferential figure known to millions of readers, but a savvy and learned man who concealed his intelligence from the whites around him, and even from Twain himself. Salman Rushdie’s first National Book Award nomination was for a memoir he wished he had no reason to write. In “Knife,” he recounts in full detail the horrifying attempt on his life in 2022, when an attendee rushed the stage during a literary event in western New York and stabbed him repeatedly, leaving with him a blinded eye and lasting nerve damage, but with a spirit surprisingly intact. “If you had told me that this was going to happen and how would I deal with it, I would not have been very optimistic about my chances,” he told The Associated Press last spring. “I’m still myself, you know, and I don’t feel other than myself. But there’s a little iron in the soul, I think.”

The biggest lesson is how terribly the inflation-is-transitory trade worked out for investors. And for voters and world leaders who don’t relish a Donald Trump 2.0 presidency. The as many fathers — from post-Covid supply chain disruptions to excessively low interest rates to an explosion of over-the-top government stimulus. But Trump’s reelection is the mother-of-all side effects from fiscal and monetary policies run amok. And Asia has the ultimate front-row seat for what’s to come as Trump retakes the reins with very big — and controversial — plans. Most of the focus is on the Trump 2.0 trade war to come. But far more attention should be on the fireworks sure to come as Trump’s collide with a fiscal train wreck unfolding in slow motion. On January 20, Trump will inherit a national debt exceeding US$36 trillion. And, depending on which pundit you follow, Trump is either about to explode the debt in wildly disruptive ways via massive tax cuts – or, given the giant scalpel Trump has handed Elon Musk, slash it aggressively. Either outcome could pose huge risks for global markets. Door No. 1 could see the US debt zooming toward US$40 trillion and credit rating companies pouncing. Washington could quickly lose its last AAA rating, from Moody’s Investors Service. Asia is directly on the frontlines of the chaos such a downgrade would unleash in bond, stock and currency markets everywhere. Door No. 2 would see Trump’s Tesla billionaire benefactor trying to trim by firing government employees here and there. But unless Team Trump is willing to target the military and entitlements like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, Musk’s government efficiency unit won’t make a dent. Far more success would be had focusing on deregulation and over-the-top subsidies on industries like those on which Musk’s private companies rely. It was a lack of investment in productivity-enhancing sectors and technologies that left the US so susceptible to inflation. “With Trump and some likely appointees focused on reducing bilateral deficits,” says Andrew Tilton, an economist at Goldman Sachs, “there is a risk that — in a sort of ‘whack-a-mole’ manner — burgeoning bilateral deficits could eventually prompt US tariffs on other Asian economies.” Tilton adds that “Korea, Taiwan and, especially, have seen large trade gains versus the US,” something Trump 2.0 isn’t likely to let slide. As such, Asia’s top trading nations may try to narrow surpluses to “deflect” Team Trump’s attention away from them. Barclays Bank economist Brian Tan adds that “trade policy is where Mr. Trump is likely to be most consequential for emerging Asia in his second term as US president,” inflicting “greater pain” on more open economies. Suffice it to say, America’s debt excesses also will challenge — and most likely plague — the Trump 2.0 era in ways the president-elect doesn’t seem to realize. If ever there were a buckle-your-seatbelt moment for Asia, 2025 is it. The combination of runaway debt and inflation will limit the Federal Reserve’s ability to continue . And even if Fed Chairman Jerome Powell tries, fiscal realities will result in higher-than-hoped long-term rates. One of the quandaries facing the Fed is the health of the banking system. Banks have been huge buyers of Treasury securities. Will institutions run into stability troubles if medium and long-term government debt yields fall faster than expected? This could trigger supply issues, too. It’s reasonable to question whether banks can continue to buy Treasuries if interest rates move too low too fast. Part of Asia’s problem is it’s unclear which Trump will enter the White House roughly a month from now, says Yanmei Xie, economist at Gavekal Dragonomics. “The problem with interpreting trade policy in a second Trump administration is that key Trump advisors have proclaimed two very different visions, and Trump himself has offered qualified support to both,” Xie notes. The common feature is tariffs or the threat of tariffs: 60% or more on China and 10-20% on the . But to what end?” One possibility, she says, is that Trump will go with his once and possibly future trade czar, Robert Lighthizer, in pushing for a rapid, across-the-board disengagement from China. “Trump,” Xie says, “promised a four-year plan to phase out all Chinese imports of essential goods — everything from electronics to steel to pharmaceuticals – and vowed to include strong protections to ensure China can’t circumvent restrictions by passing goods through conduit countries. In this scenario, there would be a ramping-up of coercive pressure on allies to join in the agenda.” Another possibility is that Trump uses the threat of tariffs as negotiating leverage to cut a deal with China, although the content of any such deal is very unclear. “This is the approach favored by Scott Bessent” – Trump’s pick for Treasury secretary – “who claims that Trump is in fact ‘a free trader’ who will deploy tariffs to escalate to ,” Xie notes. Another major Trump wild card is a US dollar devaluation, which many Trump advisers see as the fastest way to regain broad-based manufacturing competitiveness. “China is unlikely to cooperate with this agenda,” Xie says, “but the theory of the across-the-board tariff on all trading partners seems to be that it will also be used as leverage in currency negotiations.” Trump has indeed talked about a Plaza Accord 2.0 that weakens the dollar versus the yen. In 1985, US President Ronald Reagan’s Treasury secretary, James Baker, managed to convince the most powerful industrialized nations to push the yen sharply higher and the dollar lower. It was the high-point of Reagan’s mercantilist policy mix, which inspired Trump. The deal was done at the Plaza Hotel, a New York institution that Trump once owned. Early in the Trump 1.0 years, then-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and advisors like Peter Navarro hinted at Trump’s desire for a “new Plaza Accord” that would send the Chinese yuan soaring. Now, as gears up, Trump seems ready to give the strategy another try. Chinese leader Xi Jinping would surely refuse. Chinese officials know how the 1985 currency deal precipitated Japan’s asset bubble in the late 1980s, leading to decades of economic stagnation. Many economists also worry that a weaker dollar could send inflation into the stratosphere, while a stronger yuan would slam China’s all-important export engine. One way Trump might try to engineer a weaker dollar is by commandeering decisions. Trump and his advisors have made it clear the Fed’s independence is on the line come January. The “Project 2025” scheme that Republican operatives cooked up for Trump 2.0 includes curbing the Fed’s autonomy. Jerome Powell, Trump’s handpicked Fed chairman, had a challenging time during Trump 1.0. From 2017 to 2021, Trump cajoled Powell’s team with a verve never before seen from a White House. Trump attacked the Fed in speeches, press conferences and on social media. Trump even mulled firing Powell. That year, the Fed suddenly began cutting rates, adding liquidity to an economy that didn’t need it. In October, Trump mocked Powell’s policymaking team. “I think it’s the greatest job in government,” Trump told Bloomberg. “You show up to the office once a month and you say, ‘let’s say flip a coin’ and everybody talks about you like you’re a god.” Trump also argues that presidents have the right to pressure the central bank to do their bidding. “The Federal Reserve is a very interesting thing and it’s sort of gotten it wrong a lot,” Trump said in August. He added that “I feel the president should have at least say in there, yeah. I feel that strongly. I think that, in my case, I made a lot of money. I was very successful. And I think I have a better instinct than, in many cases, people that would be on the Federal Reserve or the chairman.” Such maneuvers are of particular concern in Asia, where central banks hold the biggest stockpiles of US Treasury securities. Japan alone holds US$1.1 trillion of US debt; US$770-plus billion. Asia’s largest holders of dollars are sitting on about US$3 trillion worth. The Trump 2.0 presidency could put at risk vast amounts of Asian state wealth. Trump’s antics here could send the dollar sharply lower. Many investors argue, of course, that continued dollar strength isn’t necessarily great news for the global financial system heading toward 2025 either. The dollar’s “wrecking ball” tendencies have been shaking up global markets in recent years. It sucked up outsized waves of global capital, disadvantaging emerging economies in particular. Tom Dunleavy, a partner at MV Capital, speaks for many when he says risks posed by this wrecking ball dynamic are “particularly acute in emerging markets” because “they rely heavily on commodities and have debt in dollars.” Oil, most trade and debt are still priced in dollars. And, he says, “The denominator of everything is going up.” The more crowded a continued-dollar-strength trade gets, regardless of the questionable logic behind it, the bigger the global fallout when disappointed punters run for the exits. The U-turn could be especially chaotic if Trump’s Treasury team works to devalue the dollar. The more inflationary such a maneuver proves to be, the more chaotic it could be. Economists including former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers are warning that Trump would be wise to abandon his campaign promises, in order to avoid sending sharply higher. Summers was right about US inflation being of the longer-lasting variety. Now, he worries that Trump’s plans to impose giant tariffs, cut taxes, deport undocumented workers and mess with the Fed’s mandate will boost inflation. “If he carries through on what he said during his campaign, there will be an inflation shock significantly greater than the one the country suffered in 2021,” Summers told CNN recently. Summers worries that the Trump stimulus burst to come could send prices closer to the four-decade high of 9.1% recorded in June 2022. Even if this proves too pessimistic, US inflation is almost certain to dominate the global economy in 2025. Kelvin Wong, senior market analyst at broker OANDA, says that “the incoming Trump administration’s ‘America First’ policy may see a further escalation of deglobalization that can trigger headwinds to global economic growth and spurt another round of inflationary pressure resurgence.” Wong notes that the 10-year US Treasury yield may rise faster than the 2-year rate “due to higher inflationary pressures” from Trump’s mercantilist policies. Far from being transitory, US inflation may be about to get a very powerful second wind, one sure to blow Asia’s way early and often in 2025.

An anti-trust case by the US Department of Justice against Google , which began in 2020, has continued to gain intensity since a ruling in August asserted that Google is engaged in an illegal monopoly over the search engine market. The ruling had affirmed the opinion that Google spent billions to secure its position as the default world’s search engine, squashing potential competition through its acquisition of power. On Wednesday, November 20 Federal attorneys submitted a detailed plan to US district judge Amit Mehta in Washington, DC, outlining steps including ending its Apple partnership, making proprietary data available to more competitors and advertisers, and finally, fully divesting from its browser Google Chrome. For many, the moment is reminiscent of the attempt to break up Microsoft in 2001, which is likely the last anti-trust case to reach this level. To illustrate how the resolution could affect the company’s business, Google made $49.4 billion in revenue from search advertising alone according to its third quarter reports. In response to the ruling, Google shared a blog post calling it “a radical interventionist agenda that would harm Americans and America’s global technology leadership.” “DOJ’s wildly overbroad proposal goes miles beyond the Court’s decision. It would break a range of Google products — even beyond Search — that people love and find helpful in their everyday lives,” the post continued. Whether or not, Google’s parent Alphabet will be required to do so will be decided at a later court date in early 2025. BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Tens of thousands of Spaniards marched in downtown Barcelona on Saturday to protest the skyrocketing cost of renting an apartment in the popular tourist destination. Protesters cut off traffic on main avenues in the city center, holding up homemade signs in Spanish reading “Fewer apartments for investing and more homes for living" and “The people without homes uphold their rights.” The lack of affordable housing has become one of the leading concerns for the southern European Union country, mirroring the housing crunch across many parts of the world, including the United States . Organizers said that over 100,000 had turned out, while Barcelona’s police said they estimated some 22,000 marched. Either way, the throngs of people clogging the streets recalled the massive separatist rallies at the height of the previous decade’s Catalan independence movement. Now, social concerns led by housing have displaced political crusades. That is because the average rent for Spain has doubled in last 10 years. The price per square meter has risen from 7.2 euros ($7.5) in 2014 to 13 euros this year, according to the popular online real estate website Idealista. The growth is even more acute in cities like Barcelona and Madrid. Incomes meanwhile have failed to keep up, especially for younger people in a country with chronically high unemployment. Protestor Samuel Saintot said he is “frustrated and scared” after being told by the owners of the apartment he has rented for the past 15 years in Barcelona’s city center that he must vacate the premises. He suspects that the owners want him out so they can renovate it and boost the price. “Even looking in a 20- or 30-kilometer radius outside town, I can’t even find anything within the price range I can afford,” he told The Associated Press. “And I consider myself a very fortunate person, because I earn a decent salary. And even in my case, I may be forced to leave town.” A report by the Bank of Spain indicates that nearly 40% of Spaniards who rent dedicate an average of 40% of their income to paying rents and utilities, compared to the European Union average of 27% of renters who do so. “We are talking about a housing emergency. It means people having many difficulties both in accessing and staying in their homes,” said Ignasi Martí, professor for Esade business school and head of its Dignified Housing Observatory. The rise in rents is causing significant pain in Spain, where traditionally people seek to own their homes. Rental prices have also been driven up by short-term renters including tourists. Many migrants to Spain are also disproportionately hit by the high rents because they often do not have enough savings. Spain is near the bottom end of OECD countries with under 2% of all housing available being public housing for rent. The OECD average is 7%. Spain is far behind France, with 14%, Britain with 16%, and the Netherlands with 34%. Carme Arcarazo, spokesperson for Barcelona’s Tenants Union which helped organize the protest, said that renters should consider a “rent strike” and cease paying their monthly rents in a mass protest movement. “I think we the tenants have understood that this depends on us. That we can’t keep asking and making demands to the authorities and waiting for an answer. We must take the reins of the situation,” Arcarazo told the AP. “So, if they (the owners) won’t lower the rent, then we will force them to do it." The Barcelona protest came a month after tens of thousands rallied against high rents in Madrid. The rising discontent over housing is putting pressure on Spain’s governing Socialist party, which leads a coalition on the national level and is in charge of Catalonia’s regional government and Barcelona’s city hall. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez presided over what the government termed a “housing summit” including government officials and real estate developers last month. But the Barcelona’s Tenants Union boycotted the event, saying it was like calling a summit for curing cancer and inviting tobacco companies to participate. The leading government measure has been a rent cap mechanism that the central government has offered to regional authorities based on a price index established by the housing ministry. Rent controls can be applied to areas deemed to be “highly stressed” by high rental prices. Catalonia was the first region to apply those caps, which are in place in downtown Barcelona. Many locals blame the million of tourists who visit Barcelona, and the rest of Spain, each year for the high prices. Barcelona’s town hall has pledged to completely eliminate the city’s 10,000 so called “tourist apartments,” or dwellings with permits for short-term rents, by 2028.

When you think of the greatest offensive center of all time, who comes to mind? If the name Shaquille O'Neal or Hakeem Olajuwon immediately popped up in your head, you might be on the right track. However, Fat Joe took a completely different approach, as his GOAT for an offensive center just so happens to be New York Knicks' Karl-Anthony Towns. Rapper Fat Joe was a recent guest on future Hall-of-Famer Carmelo Anthony's podcast, 7pm in Brooklyn , where the conversation centered around New York fashion, his once-in-a-lifetime World Series experience, and of course, New York basketball. As the conversation continued, the hip-hop legend then began expressing his admiration for Towns. He immediately states "I don't think I've seen a better offensive big man than KAT". Joe then went on to list his reasons as to why he believed in this statement so strongly. Fat Joe ultimately summed up KAT's game as "he's too hard to guard". The New York rapper says Towns' has more offensive moves in his arsenal than anyone he's ever seen at the position. He mentioned KAT's ability to shift his body in different positions to get to the rim, give his defender a number of different moves to the basket, and score from all areas of the floor. He also went on to reconfirm KAT is better than every NBA legend to date, including NBA superstars like Shaquille O'Neal and Hakeem Olajuwon. He says Shaq is the "most dominant big man ever", but offensively, Fat Joe stood ten toes down on his take. "I've sat in the game and watched KAT do ten moves. You cannot know what he's gonna give you. Hit em' with the left. Hit em' with the right. Spin on you this way, that way, that way. That's impossible to guard...best offensively ever. I'm talking about Olajuwon, Shaq is the most dominant big man but he ain't doing this...my take is he's too hard to guard." Is KAT the best offensive big man EVER? 🧐 Fat Joe did not hold back with this take. pic.twitter.com/yh0Esj1I27 Fans have been in an uproar since the clip of this conversation began circling the internet, with many saying he's disrespecting our NBA legends. Many are also in shock Fat Joe would give this title to KAT and not Denver Nuggets Center and three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokcić. Although lots of fans would disagree with KAT being the greatest offensive center of all time, he is off to a great start offensively in his new home with the New York Knicks. He plays a significant role in the Knicks offense averaging 24.9 points, 13.6 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. That said, it's easy to disagree with the statement while also taking nothing away from the incredible career Towns has been able to put together. He is also clearly in good standings with the fans in New York, and we can expect to see lots of great things coming from the big man in the future. For more NBA news, head on over to Newsweek Sports .New York, Nov 23 (AP) Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, was chosen by Donald Trump to serve as US attorney general hours after his first choice, Matt Gaetz, withdrew from consideration after a federal sex trafficking investigation and ethics probe made his ability to be confirmed dubious. The 59-year-old has long been in Trump's orbit and her name had been floated during his first term as a potential candidate for the nation's highest law enforcement role. Trump announced his plans to nominate Bondi Thursday in a social media post. Here's a few things to know about Bondi: She's long been a fixture in Trump's world Bondi has been a longtime and early ally. In March 2016, on the eve of the Republican primary in Florida, Bondi endorsed Trump at a rally, picking him over the candidate from her own state, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio. She gained national attention with appearances on Fox News as a defender of Trump and had a notable speaking spot at 2016 Republican National Convention as Trump became the party's surprising nominee. During the remarks, some in the crowd began chanting "Lock her up" about Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton. Bondi responded by saying, “Lock her up,' I love that." As Trump prepared to move into the White House, she served on his first transition team. When Trump's first attorney general, Jeff Sessions, was ousted in 2018, Bondi's name was floated as a possible candidate for the job. Trump at the time said he would “love” Bondi to join the administration. He ultimately selected William Barr instead. She kept a toehold in Trump's orbit thereafter, including after he left office. She served as a chairwoman of America First Policy Institute, a think tank set up by former Trump administration staffers to lay the groundwork if he won a second term. She was Florida's first female attorney general Bondi made history in 2010 when she was elected as Florida's first female attorney general. Though the Tampa native spent more than 18 years as a prosecutor in the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office, she was a political unknown when she held the state's top law enforcement job. Bondi was elevated in the primary after she was endorsed by former Alaska governor and vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. She campaigned on a message to use the state's top legal office in a robust way, challenging then-President Barack Obama's signature health care law. She also called for her state to adopt Arizona's “show me your papers” immigration law that sparked national debate. As Florida's top prosecutor, Bondi stressed human trafficking issues and urged tightening state laws against traffickers. She held the job from 2011 to 2019. She worked as a lobbyist for both US and foreign clients Bondi worked as a lobbyist for Ballard Partners, the powerful Florida-based firm where Trump's campaign chief and incoming chief of staff Susie Wiles was a partner. Her US clients have included General Motors, the commissioner of Major League Baseball and a Christian anti-human-trafficking advocacy group. She also lobbied for a Kuwaiti firm, according to Justice Department foreign agent filings and congressional lobbying documents. She registered as a foreign agent for the government of Qatar; her work was related to anti-human-trafficking efforts leading up to the World Cup, held in 2022. Bondi also represented the KGL Investment Company KSCC, a Kuwaiti firm also known as KGLI, lobbying the White House, National Security Council, State Department and Congress on immigration policy, human rights and economic sanctions issues. She defended Trump during his first impeachment trial Bondi stepped away from lobbying to serve on Trump's legal team during his first impeachment trial in 2020. He was accused — but not convicted — of abuse of power for allegedly pressuring the president of Ukraine to investigate his Democratic rivals while crucial US security aid was being withheld. He was also charged with obstruction of Congress for stonewalling investigative efforts. Trump wanted Ukraine's president to publicly commit to investigating Joe Biden's son Hunter Biden, who served on the board of a Ukrainian gas company. He pushed for the investigation while holding up nearly USD 400 million in military aid. Bondi was brought on to bolster the White House's messaging and communications. Trump and his allies sought to delegitimise the impeachment from the start, aiming to brush off the whole thing as a farce. She's been critical of the criminal cases against Trump Bondi has been a vocal critic of the criminal cases against Trump as well as Jack Smith, the special counsel who charged Trump in two federal cases. In one radio appearance, she blasted Smith and other prosecutors who have charged Trump as “horrible” people she said were trying to make names for themselves by “going after Donald Trump and weaponising our legal system”. It's unlikely that Bondi would be confirmed in time to overlap with Smith, who brought two federal indictments against Trump that are both expected to wind down before the incoming president takes office. Special counsels are expected to produce reports on their work that historically are made public, but it remains unclear when such a document might be released. Bondi was also among a group of Republicans who showed up to support Trump at his hush money criminal trial in New York that ended in May with a conviction on 34 felony counts. As president, Trump demanded investigations into political opponents like Hillary Clinton and sought to use the law enforcement powers of the Justice Department to advance his own interests, including in trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Bondi appears likely to oblige him. She would inherit a Justice Department expected to pivot sharply on civil rights, corporate enforcement and the prosecutions of hundreds of Trump supporters charged in the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol — defendants whom Trump has pledged to pardon. She's had a few of her own political issues Bondi issued a public apology in 2013 while serving as attorney general after she sought to delay the execution of a convicted killer because it conflicted with a fundraiser for her reelection campaign. The attorney general, representing the state in death row appeals, typically remains available on the date of execution cases in case of any last-minute legal issues. Bondi later said she was wrong and sorry for requesting then-Gov. Rick Scott push back the execution of Marshall Lee Gore by three weeks. Bondi personally solicited a 2013 political contribution from Trump as her office was weighing whether to join New York in suing over fraud allegations involving Trump University. Trump cut a USD 25,000 check to a political committee supporting Bondi from his family's charitable foundation, in violation of legal prohibitions against charities supporting partisan political activities. After the check came in, Bondi's office nixed suing Trump's company for fraud, citing insufficient grounds to proceed. Both Trump and Bondi denied wrongdoing, the state's ethics commission tossed the complaints and a prosecutor assigned by then-GOP Gov. Rick Scott determined there was insufficient evidence to support bribery charges over the donation. "This is old, discredited news,” said Trump transition spokeswoman Alex Pfeiffer. Two days before being sworn in as president in January 2017, Trump paid USD 25 million to settle three lawsuits alleging Trump University defrauded its students. Trump also paid a USD 2,500 fine to the IRS over the illegal political donation to support Bondi from the Donald J. Trump Foundation, which he was forced to dissolve amid an investigation by the state of New York. Fraser Health has launched a public awareness campaign encouraging pregnant people and people with syphilis symptoms to get tested for the sexually transmitted infection as cases continue to climb in British Columbia. In 2019 the provincial health officer declared a syphilis outbreak in B.C. based on rising case numbers. Since then the entire province has seen a “dramatic” increase in cases, said Dr. Vincent Valdrez, a BC Centre for Disease Control sexually transmitted infection physician. During the first six months of this year, B.C. had 1,049 cases of infectious syphilis, up from 154 cases in all of 2010. There were 1,060 cases in 2019, and 1,964 in 2022, according to the 2023 BC Syphilis Action Plan Refresh. A decade ago most syphilis cases were among men who have sex with men, but today two-thirds of syphilis cases occur in people who report having only heterosexual partners, and one-third of all cases are in women, he said. To boost public awareness about syphilis and the importance of testing, Fraser Health has placed ads on buses and bus stops. They’ve also placed digital ads in Fraser Health facilities, online and on Facebook and Instagram, the health authority told The Tyee in an email. Symptom-free phase can still be contagious Valdrez said it’s not clear why case counts are increasing and the demographics are significantly shifting, but it’s important that people know that anyone who is sexually active has some risk of contracting an STI. Testing is recommended for anyone who has never been tested, has a sexual partner who tested positive, is pregnant or has a new sexual partner, and, of course, anyone who is symptomatic. Regular testing at least every few months is recommended for anyone who has multiple sexual partners or engages in other activities that can increase the risk of exposure, such as sex work. Syphilis is a bacterial infection that is usually transmitted through sexual contact, often through a lesion like a genital ulcer, but also can be transmitted when the infected person is asymptomatic, Valdrez said. A pregnant person can also transmit the infection to their developing fetus. The first stage usually consists of a painless sore or sores on the genitals, lips, mouth or anus. The infection then spreads to the rest of the body. At the second stage, symptoms can include a non-itchy rash on the chest, belly, genitals, palms or soles of the feet, having a headache, fever, hair loss or swollen lymph nodes, and having bumps or patches inside the mouth, anus and genitals, according to the SmartSexResource, a service provided by the BC Centre for Disease Control. Syphilis is called the “great mimicker” because these symptoms are non-specific and can be mistaken for other conditions, Valdrez said. It’s important for individuals but also clinicians to be aware of the symptoms and to include syphilis testing when trying to diagnose an illness. The third stage is called the “dormant” or “latent” phase, Valdrez said. It doesn’t have symptoms but can still be contagious. Within as little as a year after infection, syphilis can spread to different organ systems, such as the nervous system, he said. An infection can make people “go blind, [or] people can lose their hearing and it can spread to the brain and people can get strokes or seizures,” which are caused by inflammation around the brain, Valdrez said. “It’s very important to catch syphilis early and to treat it early to prevent these longer-term effects,” Valdrez said. Congenital syphilis An increase in infections in people assigned female at birth is doubly concerning because of the risk of congenital syphilis, in which a pregnant person can transmit the infection to a developing fetus, Valdrez said. Congenital syphilis can mean “babies are quite sick when they’re born, and it can lead to long-term health effects, in their immediate future but also later in life,” he added. Congenital syphilis can result in premature birth, low birthweight and other serious debilitating conditions, including stillbirth, according to Fraser Health. In 2022, over 90 per cent of women with infectious syphilis were between the ages of 15 and 49, according to the 2023 BC Syphilis Action Plan Refresh. There were 355 cases of infectious syphilis in females aged 15 to 49 during the first half of this year, according to the BC Centre for Disease Control. Twenty-three of those cases were diagnosed during prenatal screening. There were 21 cases of congenital syphilis in 2023, up from two cases in 2020, Fraser Health said. In 2019 B.C. introduced a new guideline for pregnant people to test for syphilis during the first trimester or at the first prenatal visit, and again during delivery. Valdrez said a syphilis blood test ideally happens during the first trimester so there are at least four weeks between when they get treatment and when they deliver. This “would ensure a treatment of the syphilis infection in both the pregnant person and the prevention of transmission to the baby,” he said. Unfortunately people aren’t always interacting with the health-care system during their first trimester of pregnancy, he said. There are complex reasons why people don’t access medical care at regular intervals, he added. For example, a person may be unhoused and learn they are pregnant and have syphilis only when they seek emergency care for an unrelated issue, he said. Late is better than never, he said. The good news: syphilis is curable The good news is that testing and treatment for STIs is free in B.C., and that syphilis can be cured with antibiotics at any stage of the infection. Further good news is that, so far, there haven’t been any antibiotic-resistant cases of syphilis found in the province, Valdrez said. British Columbians can speak with their doctor about getting tested for STIs, or use other free and confidential testing services like the BC Centre for Disease Control’s GetCheckedOnline. GetCheckedOnline allows people to make a lab form that they can take to participating labs for free STI testing. Participants don’t need to provide their name or have a Medical Services Plan number — you just need to provide an email and phone number. There are participating labs in Vancouver, Maple Ridge, Victoria, Duncan, Kamloops, Kimberley and Nelson. Vancouver is also home to the BC Centre for Disease Control’s STI clinic, located near City Hall and open six days a week. The STI clinic offers free and confidential testing and treatment, and patients are not required to be enrolled in B.C.’s provincial health care. Options for Sexual Health has 60 clinics across the province that provide free STI testing and treatment for people enrolled in MSP. Those without MSP coverage may be charged up to $200, depending on the service, and Options for Sexual Health does not offer anonymous testing like GetCheckedOnline or the BC Centre for Disease Control STI clinic. Syphilis can be treated for free in B.C. with penicillin injections. Urgent and primary care centres, emergency departments, sexual health clinics, community health centres and public health centres will generally have these stocked, or a doctor could order and administer the treatment regardless of where you live in B.C., Valdrez said. Alternative antibiotics are available for people with penicillin allergies; people should discuss options with the doctor who is treating them. SEE ALSO:

NEW YORK (AP) — An early rebound for U.S. stocks on Thursday petered out by the end of the day, leaving indexes close to flat. The S&P 500 edged down by 0.1% following Wednesday’s tumble of 2.9% when the Federal Reserve said it may deliver fewer cuts to interest rates next year than earlier thought. The index had been up as much as 1.1% in the morning. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 15 points, or less than 0.1%, following Wednesday’s drop of 1,123 points, while the Nasdaq composite slipped 0.1%. This week’s struggles have taken some of the enthusiasm out of the market, which critics had been warning was overly buoyant and would need everything to go correctly for it to justify its high prices. But indexes remain near their records , and the S&P 500 is still on track for one of its best years of the millennium with a gain of 23%. Traders are now expecting the Federal Reserve to deliver just one or maybe two cuts to interest rates next year, according to data from CME Group. Some are even betting on none. A month ago, the majority saw at least two cuts in 2025 as a safe bet. Wall Street loves lower interest rates because they give the economy a boost and goose prices for investments, but they can also provide fuel for inflation. Micron Technology was one of the heaviest weights on the S&P 500 Thursday. It fell 16.2% despite reporting stronger profit for the latest quarter than expected. The computer memory company’s revenue fell short of Wall Street’s forecasts, and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said it expects demand from consumers to remain weaker in the near term. It gave a forecast for revenue in the current quarter that fell well short of what analysts were thinking. Lamb Weston, which makes French fries and other potato products, dropped 20.1% after falling short of analysts’ expectations for profit and revenue in the latest quarter. It also cut its financial targets for the fiscal year, saying demand for frozen potatoes is continuing to soften, particularly outside North America. The company replaced its chief executive. Such losses helped overshadow a 14.7% jump for Darden Restaurants, the company behind Olive Garden and other chains. It delivered profit for the latest quarter that edged past analysts’ expectations. The operator of LongHorn Steakhouses also gave a forecast for revenue for this fiscal year that topped analysts’. Accenture rose 7.1% after the professional services company likewise topped expectations for profit in the latest quarter. CEO Julie Sweet said it saw growth around the world, and the company raised its forecast for revenue this fiscal year. Amazon shares added 1.3%, even as workers at seven of its facilities went on strike Thursday in the middle of the online retail giant’s busiest time of the year. Amazon says it doesn’t expect an impact on its operations during what the workers’ union calls the largest strike against the company in U.S. history. In the bond market, yields were mixed a day after shooting higher on expectations that the Fed would deliver fewer cuts to rates in 2025. Reports on the U.S. economy came in mixed. One showed the overall economy grew at a 3.1% annualized rate during the summer, faster than earlier thought. The economy has remained remarkably resilient even though the Fed held its main interest rate at a two-decade high for a while before beginning to cut them in September. A separate report showed fewer U.S. workers applied for unemployment benefits last week, an indication that the job market also remains solid. But a third report said manufacturing in the mid-Atlantic region is unexpectedly contracting again despite economists’ expectations for growth. The yield on the 10-year Treasury rose to 4.57% from 4.52% late Wednesday and from less than 4.20% earlier this month. But the two-year yield, which more closely tracks expectations for action by the Fed in the near term, eased back to 4.31% from 4.35%. The rise in longer-term yields has put pressure on the housing market by keeping mortgage rates higher. Homebuilder Lennar fell 5.2% after reporting weaker profit and revenue for the latest quarter than analysts expected. CEO Stuart Miller said that “the housing market that appeared to be improving as the Fed cut short-term interest rates, proved to be far more challenging as mortgage rates rose” through the quarter. “Even while demand remained strong, and the chronic supply shortage continued to drive the market, our results were driven by affordability limitations from higher interest rates,” he said. A report on Thursday may have offered some encouragement for the housing industry. It showed a pickup in sales of previously occupied homes. All told, the S&P 500 slipped 5.08 points to 5,867.08. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 15.37 to 42,342.24, and the Nasdaq composite lost 19.92 to 19,372.77. In stock markets abroad, London’s FTSE 100 fell 1.1% after the Bank of England paused its cuts to rates and kept its main interest rate unchanged on Thursday. The move comes as inflation there moved further above the central bank’s 2% target rate, while the British economy is flatlining at best. The Bank of Japan also kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged, and Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 fell 0.7%. Indexes likewise sank across much of the rest of Asia and Europe. Each holder of common stock as of the Record Date (each, an "Eligible Stockholder") will receive one Subscription Right for each share of the common stock owned as of the Record Date. Each Subscription Right entitles the holder to purchase 0.0677 shares of Class B common stock. The Company will not issue any fractional shares of Class B common stock in the Rights Offering. Accordingly, as each Subscription Right represents the right to purchase 0.0677 shares of Class B common stock, an Eligible Stockholder must hold at least 15 shares of Class A common stock or Class B common stock to receive sufficient Subscription Rights to purchase at least one share of Class B common stock in the Rights Offering. Other Important Information The Subscription Rights will not be listed for trading on any stock exchange or market. Therefore, there will be no public market for the Subscription Rights. However, the shares of Class B common stock issued upon the exercise of the Subscription Rights will remain listed on The Nasdaq Capital Market of the Nasdaq Stock Market LLC under the symbol "RMBL." The Company expects that Broadridge Corporate Issuer Solutions, LLC, the subscription and information agent for the Rights Offering, will distribute subscription documents for the Rights Offering to Eligible Stockholders beginning on or about November 26, 2024 . The separation will allow for more customized operational execution along with more tailored investment and capital allocation, FedEx said, underscoring the differences between LTL and parcel shipping. Rival UPS sold its own LTL unit, UPS Freight, to TFI International in 2021. “This is the right time to pursue a separation as we respond to the unique dynamics of the LTL market,” said Raj Subramaniam, FedEx president and CEO, in the announcement. It’s not a total surprise: FedEx has been streamlining its operations and had hinted to investors in June a spinoff was possible. A board review of the unit’s role in its portfolio recommended the move, which FedEx promised to execute in a tax-efficient manner for stockholders. FedEx Freight boasts the largest real-estate network of any U.S. LTL carrier, with about 400 service centers, according to its website . The business has around 40,000 employees and 30,000 vehicles. “This announcement is a testament to the strength of the business our team has built, and to our dedication to doing what’s best for our customers, our team members, and our stockholders,” Subramaniam said. The two companies will maintain cooperation on key commercial, operational and technology initiatives, FedEx said. But the spinoff aims to create value for shareholders by running the LTL carrier as pure-play operation, a strategy competitor XPO followed in recent years with its spinoffs of its warehousing and other non-LTL properties. The goal is to avoid the “conglomerate discount,” a Wall Street concept that has driven corporate spinoffs across industries, as company leaders say their investors prefer more specific companies to big corporations. In FedEx’s case, a spinoff would allow shareholders to be more selective about which of its distinct businesses they invest in. “Through this process, we will unlock value for our Freight business and position FedEx to create even greater value for stockholders,” Subramaniam said.

Devolver Delayed showcase returns tomorrowGlobal stocks mostly rose Tuesday, with US and German indices posting records, as markets weighed Chinese stimulus hopes, political tensions in France and the US interest-rate outlook. Germany's blue-chip DAX stock index jumped above 20,000 points for the first time and Paris rebounded even as France braced for new political turmoil. In New York, both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq narrowly rose to finish at records, while the Dow pulled back. Oil prices jumped more than two percent following reports that crude exporters were near an agreement to extend production limits. A closely-watched labor market report showed an increase in US job openings in October, but also a decline in new job postings during the month, a less upbeat sign. Samuel Tombs, chief US economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the data overall provides "good grounds" for the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates again this month. Still, the choppiness of Tuesday's trading session in New York points to reticence among US investors following a series of post-election records that many pundits believe have left stocks overvalued. "There wasn't a lot of conviction behind the upside moves," said Briefing.com . "The overall vibe in the market was more negative." Stocks in Paris edged higher even as France headed into a new political crisis as opposition lawmakers vowed to topple the minority government of Prime Minister Michel Barnier in a no-confidence vote after just three months in office. Germany's DAX, meanwhile, scored a fresh milestone, defying multiple headwinds battering Europe's biggest economy. The German economy, hit hard by a manufacturing slowdown and weak demand for its exports, has struggled in 2024. Yet the DAX has advanced in large part because companies in the index do heavy business abroad. In addition, the euro's recent weakness has boosted Germany's export-oriented companies, while easing interest rates both in the eurozone and the United States have also helped sentiment. Investors greeted a Bloomberg report that China's top leaders, including President Xi Jinping, would hold a two-day economic work conference next week to outline their targets and stimulus plans for next year. The report followed manufacturing activity data on Monday that suggested China's economic struggles may be coming to an end, but investors are looking for Beijing to step up support for the economy. The news helped push Hong Kong and Shanghai stock markets higher despite Washington announcing new export restrictions taking aim at Beijing's ability to make advanced semiconductors. The moves step up existing US efforts to tighten curbs on exports of state-of-the-art AI chips to China. Beijing hit back by saying it would restrict exports to the United States of some key components in making semiconductors. Oil prices jumped ahead of a meeting Thursday of members of the OPEC oil cartel and its allies "The forecast is that they will announce an extension until the end of the first quarter of 2025, and this should help put a floor under prices," said Trade Nation analyst David Morrison. Jonah Goldberg Among elites across the ideological spectrum, there's one point of unifying agreement: Americans are bitterly divided. What if that's wrong? What if elites are the ones who are bitterly divided while most Americans are fairly unified? History rarely lines up perfectly with the calendar (the "sixties" didn't really start until the decade was almost over). But politically, the 21st century neatly began in 2000, when the election ended in a tie and the color coding of electoral maps became enshrined as a kind of permanent tribal color war of "red vs. blue." Elite understanding of politics has been stuck in this framework ever since. Politicians and voters have leaned into this alleged political reality, making it seem all the more real in the process. I loathe the phrase "perception is reality," but in politics it has the reifying power of self-fulfilling prophecy. Like rival noble families in medieval Europe, elites have been vying for power and dominance on the arrogant assumption that their subjects share their concern for who rules rather than what the rulers can deliver. Political cartoonists from across country draw up something special for the holiday In 2018, the group More in Common published a massive report on the "hidden tribes" of American politics. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." Lacking a narrative might seem like a very postmodern problem, but in a postmodern elite culture, postmodern problems are real problems. It's worth noting that red vs. blue America didn't emerge ex nihilo. The 1990s were a time when the economy and government seemed to be working, at home and abroad. As a result, elites leaned into the narcissism of small differences to gain political and cultural advantage. They remain obsessed with competing, often apocalyptic, narratives. That leaves out most Americans. The gladiatorial combatants of cable news, editorial pages and academia, and their superfan spectators, can afford these fights. Members of the exhausted majority are more interested in mere competence. I think that's the hidden unity elites are missing. This is why we keep throwing incumbent parties out of power: They get elected promising competence but get derailed -- or seduced -- by fan service to, or trolling of, the elites who dominate the national conversation. There's a difference between competence and expertise. One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. This is a particular problem for the left because it is far more invested in credentialism than the right. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. The New York Times' Ezra Klein says he's tired of defending the authority of government institutions. Rather, "I want them to work." One of the reasons progressives find Trump so offensive is his absolute inability to speak the language of expertise -- which is full of coded elite shibboleths. But Trump veritably shouts the language of competence. I don't mean he is actually competent at governing. But he is effectively blunt about calling leaders, experts and elites -- of both parties -- stupid, ineffective, weak and incompetent. He lost in 2020 because voters didn't believe he was actually good at governing. He won in 2024 because the exhausted majority concluded the Biden administration was bad at it. Nostalgia for the low-inflation pre-pandemic economy was enough to convince voters that Trumpian drama is the tolerable price to pay for a good economy. About 3 out of 4 Americans who experienced "severe hardship" because of inflation voted for Trump. The genius of Trump's most effective ad -- "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" -- was that it was simultaneously culture-war red meat and an argument that Harris was more concerned about boutique elite concerns than everyday ones. If Trump can actually deliver competent government, he could make the Republican Party the majority party for a generation. For myriad reasons, that's an if so big it's visible from space. But the opportunity is there -- and has been there all along. Goldberg is editor-in-chief of The Dispatch: thedispatch.com . Dylan Hernández: MLS deal with Apple TV could be hurting league's efforts to grow its fan base

LONDON (AP) — A woman who claimed mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor “brutally raped and battered” her in a Dublin hotel penthouse was awarded nearly 250,000 Euros ($257,000) on Friday by a civil court jury in Ireland. Nikita Hand said the Dec. 9, 2018, assault after a night of partying left her heavily bruised and suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. McGregor testified that he never forced the woman to do anything against her will and said she fabricated the allegations after the two had consensual sex. His lawyer had called Hand a gold digger. The fighter, once the face of the Ultimate Fighting Championship but now past his prime, shook his head as the jury of eight women and four men found him liable for assault after deliberating about six hours in the High Court in Dublin. He was mobbed by cameras as he left court but did not comment. He later said on the social platform X that he would appeal the verdict and the “modest award.” Hand's voice cracked and her hands trembled as she read a statement outside the courthouse, saying she would never forget what happened to her but would now be able to move on with her life. She thanked her family, partner, friends, jurors, the judge and all the supporters that had reached out to her online, but particularly her daughter. “She has given me so much strength and courage over the last six years throughout this nightmare to keep on pushing forward for justice,” she said. “I want to show (her) and every other girl and boy that you can stand up for yourself if something happens to you, no matter who the person is, and justice will be served.” The Associated Press generally does not name alleged victims of sexual violence unless they come forward publicly, as Hand has done. Under Irish law, she did not have the anonymity she would have been granted in a criminal proceeding and was named publicly throughout the trial. Her lawyer told jurors that McGregor was angry about a fight he had lost in Las Vegas two months earlier and took it out on his client. “He’s not a man, he’s a coward,” attorney John Gordon said in his closing speech. “A devious coward and you should treat him for what he is.” Gordon said his client never pretended to be a saint and was only looking to have fun when she sent McGregor a message through Instagram after attending a Christmas party. He said Hand knew McGregor socially and that they had grown up in the same area. She said he picked her and a friend up in a car and shared cocaine with them, which McGregor admitted in court, on the way to the Beacon Hotel. Hand said she told McGregor she didn't want to have sex with him and that she was menstruating. She said she told him “no” as he started kissing her but he eventually pinned her to a bed and she couldn't move. McGregor put her in a chokehold and later told her, “now you know how I felt in the octagon where I tapped out three times,” referring to a UFC match when he had to admit defeat, she said. Hand had to take several breaks in emotional testimony over three days. She said McGregor threatened to kill her during the encounter and she feared she would never see her young daughter again. Eventually, he let go of her. “I remember saying I was sorry, as I felt that I did something wrong and I wanted to reassure him that I wouldn’t tell anyone so he wouldn’t hurt me again,” she testified. She said she then let him do what he wanted and he had sex with her. A paramedic who examined Hand the next day testified that she had never before seen someone with that intensity of bruising. A doctor told jurors Hand had multiple injuries. Hand said the trauma of the attack had left her unable to work as a hairdresser, she fell behind on her mortgage and had to move out of her house. Police investigated the woman’s complaint but prosecutors declined to bring charges, saying there was insufficient evidence and a conviction was unlikely. McGregor, in his post on X, said he was disappointed jurors didn't see all the evidence prosecutors had reviewed. He testified that the two had athletic and vigorous sex, but that it was not rough. He said “she never said ‘no’ or stopped” and testified that everything she said was a lie. “It is a full blown lie among many lies,” he said when asked about the chokehold allegation. “How anyone could believe that me, as a prideful person, would highlight my shortcomings.” McGregor’s lawyer told jurors they had to set aside their animus toward the fighter. “You may have an active dislike of him, some of you may even loathe him – there is no point pretending that the situation might be otherwise,” attorney Remy Farrell said. “I’m not asking you to invite him to Sunday brunch.” The defense said the woman never told investigators McGregor threatened her life. They also showed surveillance video in court that they said appeared to show the woman kiss McGregor’s arm and hug him after they left the hotel room. Farrell said she looked “happy, happy, happy.” McGregor said he was “beyond petrified” when first questioned by police and read them a prepared statement. On the advice of his lawyer, he refused to answer more than 100 follow-up questions. The jury ruled against Hand in a case she brought against one of McGregor’s friends, James Lawrence, whom she accused of having sex with her in the hotel without consent.

(AP) — Joseph Paintsil and Dejan Joveljic scored in the first half, and the LA Galaxy won their record sixth MLS Cup championship with a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday. After striking twice in the first 13 minutes of the final with goals from their star forwards, the Galaxy nursed their lead through a scoreless second half to raise their league’s biggest trophy for the first time since 2014. MLS’ most successful franchise struggled through most of the ensuing decade, even finishing 26th in the 29-team league last year. But the Galaxy turned everything around this season with a high-scoring new lineup that finished second in the Western Conference and then streaked through the playoffs with a whopping 18 goals in five games to win another crown. Sean Nealis scored for the seventh-seeded Red Bulls, whose improbable charge through the playoffs ended one win shy of its first Cup championship. With the league’s youngest roster, New York fell just short of becoming the lowest-seeded team to win MLS’ playoff tournament under first-year German coach Sandro Schwarz. Galaxy goalkeeper John McCarthy made four saves to win his second MLS title in three seasons. He was the MVP of the 2022 MLS Cup Final for the Galaxy’s crosstown rival, Los Angeles FC. The Galaxy won this title without perhaps their most important player. Riqui Puig, the playmaking midfielder from Barcelona who ran their offence impressively all season long, tore a ligament in his knee last week in the Western Conference final. Puig watched the game in a suit, but his teammates hadn’t forgotten him: After his replacement, Gastón Brugman, set up LA’s opening goal with a superb pass, Paintsil held up Puig’s jersey to their fans during the celebration. Paintsil put the Galaxy ahead in the ninth minute when he ran onto that sublime pass from Brugman and pounded home his 14th MLS goal — including four in the playoffs — in the Ghanaian forward’s outstanding first season. Just four minutes later, Joveljic sprinted past four New York defenders and chipped home the 21st goal of his outstanding year as the Galaxy’s striker. Nealis got New York on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when he volleyed home a ball that got loose in LA’s penalty area after a corner. The Galaxy’s usually shaky defence gave up another handful of good chances before reaching halftime with a tenuous lead. The second half was lively, but scoreless. Red Bulls captain Emil Forsberg hit the outside of the post in the 72nd minute, while Gabriel Pec and Galaxy substitute Marco Reus nearly converted chances a few moments later. The ball got loose again in the Galaxy’s penalty area in the third minute of extra time, but two Red Bulls couldn’t finish. The Galaxy bench rushed onto the field and prematurely celebrated a victory in the seventh minute of injury time, only to be herded back off for another 30 seconds of play. The Galaxy finished 17-0-3 this season at their frequently renamed suburban stadium, where the sellout crowd of 26,812 for the final included several robust cheering sections of travelling Red Bulls supporters hoping to see their New Jersey-based club’s breakthrough on MLS’ biggest stage. The Galaxy’s Greg Vanney became the fourth coach to win an MLS title with two clubs. The former Galaxy player coached Toronto FC to the championship in 2017 and to runner-up finishes in both 2016 and 2019. Vanney’s coaching and technical staff in L.A. was full of former Toronto employees. Dan Calichman, Nick Theslof, former Canadian international Jason Bent, Michael Rabasca and Galaxy academy director Mike Munoz all spent time in Toronto. Jim Liston and Tom Williams, in the Galaxy sports performance department, also worked under Vanney in Toronto, as did midfielder Mark Delgado, who started Saturday, and defender Eriq Zavalaeta, who started on the Galaxy bench. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. The club famous for employing global stars from David Beckham and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Robbie Keane and Javier “Chicharito” Hernández rebuilt itself this season with lesser-known young talents from around the world. The Galaxy signed Pec from Brazil and the Ghanaian Paintsil out of Belgium, and the duo combined with incumbent Serbian striker Joveljic to form a potent attack that could outscore almost any MLS opponent. But the Galaxy also relied heavily on Puig, their Catalan catalyst and one of MLS’ best players. Puig stayed in last week’s game after injuring his knee, and he even delivered the decisive pass to Joveljic for the game’s only goal. ___ AP soccer: https://apnews.com/soccer Advertisement Advertisement

A WOMAN who has lived in a tent for the past five years has lifted the lid on what life is really like in the great outdoors - including the incredible amount of money she saves with her alternative lifestyle. Manders Barnett considers herself to be an outside dweller, spending her days salvaging roadkill to eat and make clothes from, growing vegetables and foraging plants for medicine. The 33-year-old’s quirky way of life saves her a whopping $17,000 (£13,350) a year, with her outgoings totalling just $500 a month (£392). While she says trolls online “judge” her for living in an alternative way and not having a house, she loves spending as much of her time outside as possible – and claims it isn’t cold even in the winter. “I live full-time in my 10x12-foot wall tent,” Manders, who sells homemade goods on Etsy, told What's The Jam . “It’s well-insulated, and with a fire in the woodstove it maintains a cosy temperature. “I say I live outside because I consider it to be more inside than outside. “However, 90% of my day is spent fully outdoors. “I've learned many sustainable skills like hide tanning, basketry, hunting, knitting, foraging, and clothes-making. “I get to work for myself as a content creator and a crafter, make my own schedule, and generally spend more quality time with the landscape around me to try to understand it better - none of which I would be able to do if I had stayed in the city working all of my free time away.” Manders currently lives on private land with permission from the landowners, and a big draw of her lifestyle means she has fewer outgoings. She added: “I still have bills but my expenses are far lower than they were when I had an apartment, utilities, and car payments. “I used to pay $1,200 a month in rent and utilities when living in an apartment. “I also had car payments and renters insurance as well as a large phone bill each month, totalling over $2,000 each month. “I used to have yearly expenses of about $23,000. “Today with no rent, bills for electricity, or car payments my annual expenses come to around $6,000, saving me $17,000 a year. I do salvage deer roadkill for food and other animal roadkill for clothing “My current bills are a cheap phone plan, gas for my car, food costs and hay for my horses. “My income to pay for this current lifestyle comes from my Etsy Store, social media and odd jobs I do for locals.” Manders learnt many of her current skills from her ex-partner, who she originally lived with in a canvas tarp in the summer, and a tipi in the winter, from 2019-2021. Since splitting, she has ventured out on her own with her trusty Davis wall tent, where she remains today. Food is a key part of her sustainable life, with Manders foraging, growing her own food, hunting and eating roadkill. When she does need to shop, she chooses local farm stands and locally-owned farm shops. She said: “I'm self-sufficient in many ways living this way. “I avoid processed foods at all costs. CAR LIVING is on the up as people struggle to deal with the cost of living crisis, and others are seeking a nomadic existence. Here’s all we know about the rules on car life in the UK. In the UK, you are legally allowed to live in your car— just so long as you follow a few rules. The only requirement is that your car has passed its MOT and is entirely road-legal. If legally parked, there aren’t rules against sleeping or living in a car. The trend of car or van living has taken off in the United States, where some have been forced to leave rented accommodation after landlords put up the rent. Others have opted to live in their vehicle in pursuit of a free, nomadic lifestyle , where they can travel all over the country. There are certain circumstances in which it’s not legal to sleep in a car in the UK. Firstly, you must be in a safe parking spot, not in violation of any parking restrictions. Certain car parks, lay-bys, and national parks and forests have restrictions on overnight parking, which means you can’t sleep there in a vehicle. If restrictions are broken, you could be fined or even have your vehicle towed. Secondly, you must not be above the legal drink-drive limit or under the influence of any drugs, if you intend to sleep in your car. If over the limit, you could be charged with being drunk in charge of a motor vehicle in a public place, even if you’re not driving. The ban on sleeping in your car when you're drunk comes under the Road Traffic Act 1988. The rule says you can be found guilty of an offence if in charge of a vehicle on a road or public place “after consuming so much alcohol that the proportion of it in his breath, blood or urine exceeds the prescribed limit.” “I do salvage deer roadkill for food and other animal roadkill for clothing. “I have a garden and grow simple vegetables in it like peppers, tomatoes and squash. “Sometimes, when I'm able, I hunt for meat – mostly deer. “One deer will usually have enough meat to last me a year and I can the meat to preserve it since I don't have access to a chest freezer. The negativity doesn't bother me as much as it used to, as being on social media tends to come with criticism no matter what you do “But I do shop at local farm stands and locally owned farm stores for food – I always try to support local farmers and ethically sourced foods.” Her roadkill proves handy in other ways. She said: “I tan buckskin and fur pelts and turn the skins into bags, clothes, and other items. “I try to use as much of the animal as possible. “I love to make my own clothes and accessories through knitting, card weaving and hide tanning. “Usually if I need a tool, I will try to make it so I don't have to buy it. “I've made a couple outfits from deer hides and fur pelts, as well as knitted warmer things like headbands and scarves. “In the winter I need firewood but instead of buying it I will go cut it myself with a permit on public land. “Another way I'm self-sufficient is my foraging skills. “I know a lot about wild native plants and can gather food and medicine throughout the year, as well as planting back some of those plants, to create a positive impact from my foraging activities.” Manders documents her way of life on TikTok , where she has racked up over 200,000 followers – but viewers are often critical of her. She explained: “Strangers on social media tend to have a variety of reactions however; some are enamoured with my lifestyle and others display hostility claiming I'm a fake. Houseboats can be cheaper than buying a home on dry land but doesn't come without risks. You may be able to get a special type of mortgage for a boat, but it can be more difficult than getting a traditional home loan and have higher rates of interest. You won't pay stamp duty when buying a boat to live on, and you can move to a different location whenever you want without having to sell up. You might even be able to live in a location where you wouldn't be able to afford a bricks and mortar house. But space can be more limited, and the value of houseboats can generally go down over time, like a car or motorbike. A licence which you need from the canal and river trust can cost anywhere between £510 and £1,100 a year depending on the size of the boat. There are likely to be ongoing costs for maintenance and mooring as well as fuel, a boat safety certificate and, of course, insurance. There’s always something that needs to be done on a boat – from engine servicing to treating rust spots, not to mention emptying the toilet and filling the water tank. Energy bills could be higher on the boat than a home as they are generally harder to insulate. If your boat is moored permanently, it will typically be in the lowest tax band, with single occupants benefiting from a 25% reduction. However, if you’re happy to move every two weeks as a ‘continuous cruiser,’ you won’t have to pay this “The negativity doesn't bother me as much as it used to, as being on social media tends to come with criticism no matter what you do. “I think the only downside [to my lifestyle] is having very few people to relate my perspectives to. “Living this way for years transforms a person both emotionally and psychologically that deviates from the “normal” modality of thinking. “At times I feel distanced from the frivolous concerns of domesticated society which brings about a sense of futility when it comes to my own efforts. “Because I can't relate to most others, they can't relate to me, and that results in discord because I constantly speak out against the complacency for the destruction of ecosystems. “But the best part of living this way has always been the ability to deepen my relationship with nature as well as practice individual autonomy and independence.”Trump asks US Supreme Court to pause law threatening TikTok ban

After his team's 102-89 home win on Wednesday night over Purdue Fort Wayne, Penn State coach Mike Rhoades challenged his team's fan base to show up and make more noise. "Sweat with us," he said at one point. At 5-0, the Nittany Lions haven't had to sweat much to get off to a fast start. They might not have to expend much perspiration to make it 6-0 on Monday when they meet Fordham in a semifinal matchup at the Sunshine Slam tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. Penn State hasn't played a strong schedule so far, but the team has been impressive. It's averaging 98.2 points per game and 13.8 steals per game, both of which ranked second in Division I through Saturday's play. The Nittany Lions were seventh per kenpom.com in turnover rate, forcing 25.3 per 100 possessions. Point guard Ace Baldwin Jr. is leading the charge, scoring 16.4 points and dishing out 7.8 assists while chipping in 2.6 steals. Zach Hicks has nearly doubled his scoring average from 8.4 last season to 15.8 this season, while Northern Illinois transfer Yanic Konan Niederhauser has beefed up the interior, tallying 12.2 points and 7.2 rebounds. Meanwhile, Fordham (3-3) is coming off a 73-71 home loss Friday night against Drexel in New York. The Rams blew a seven-point lead early in the second half and missed a chance to force overtime when leading scorer Jackie Johnson III missed a layup as time expired. Johnson, a UNLV transfer, is averaging 19 points per game and is making nearly 48 percent of his shots as one of three Rams with double-figure scoring averages. Jahmere Tripp scores at an 11.0 clip while Japhet Medor is contributed 10.5, but Fordham is struggling to make shots, canning only 41.5 percent from the field. The Rams were picked for a 14th-place finish in the Atlantic 10 despite returning more scoring than any team in the league except for VCU. Third-year coach Keith Urgo thinks his team can defy low external expectations. "We're experienced and I think we're poised to have a tremendous year," he said. --Field Level MediaCAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. Why is Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley upset at the “marish and the parish” over the crime rate? Your government has encouraged criminals and criminality by allegedly giving contracts to known gang leaders albeit through shadow companies. Did you expect them to change their ways after they said “thank you, Master”? These contracts are meant to cement your voter bases. To be fair, this is a strategy that has been used by previous governments. If you, as head of the National Security Council, were serious about bringing crime under control, you would have implemented strategies to do so. I heard a pastor say on national television that gang leaders are recruiting children between Forms Three and Five in secondary schools. He also said that one gang leader is trying to bring all the gangs under his control. Do you have any idea what that would mean for Trinidad and Tobago? You have a failed National Security Minister whom you refuse to terminate. The Judiciary is another major impediment to bringing crime under control. Criminals have more rights than their victims. Why does the Judiciary not follow the sentences laid out in the laws? Why must they give a “free pass” to criminals? You have previously mentioned your reluctance to interfere with the independence of the Judiciary. Nonsense. There comes a time when all necessary bodies must move as one. Do you want an example of this, Mr Prime Minister? Go back to 1998 and 1999, when the then-government, police and courts moved as one to execute Dole Chadee and his henchmen. Unfortunately, you have a lame-duck Attorney General who does not have the mettle to do the same. Criminals are emboldened by the fact that there will be little, if any repercussions, for their deeds. Imagine one of your own supporters being accosted in the Tunapuna market for wearing a People’s National Movement jersey. That is a clear breach of his right to support any political party. They can do that because no one cares. We are on a very dangerous road. The police detection rate for the over 616 murders is abysmally low. They can do much better. I make no distinction between murders and homicides to obfuscate reality. However, when the police arrest criminals, their hard work goes to naught when they are put back on the streets by the courts. I am closely watching what will happen to the three men who were arrested in Balandra on Friday for robbing a deliveryman and loaders in Toco. Yes, Dr Rowley, crime is now prevalent in far-flung areas which were once peaceful havens. One final thing. Please stop “mamaguying” the population about your plans to leave. You very well know that you are not going anywhere. Life is too sweet for you at the top of the food chain. Happy New Year to you and all citizens of Trinidad and Tobago. Twenty twenty-five will be different. Linus F Didier Mt HopeKim Kardashian cozying up to a robot is another example of AI entering our livesA pair of teams vying to put a stamp on overachieving campaigns will meet as Georgia Tech squares off with Vanderbilt in the Birmingham Bowl on Friday in Birmingham, Ala. Georgia Tech (7-5) is appearing in back-to-back bowl games for the first time since an 18-year run from 1997-2014, and a win would give the Yellow Jackets consecutive bowl wins for the first time in 20 years. For a Georgia Tech program that endured a 14-32 stretch from 2019-22, this season has given Yellow Jacket fans a reason to believe a resurgence is near. After knocking off No. 10 Florida State in the season opener, Georgia Tech climbed into the AP Poll for the first time in nine years. Although it was a short stay in the rankings, head coach Brent Key's team piqued the nation's interest again in November, when it took down undefeated No. 4 Miami, 28-23. The Yellow Jackets had another chance to shake up the college football landscape against then-No. 7 Georgia, but blew a late 14-point lead en route to an eight-overtime defeat. Now with one more opportunity against the Southeastern Conference, Key thinks the bowl organizers nailed this one on the head. "We're excited to go over to Birmingham and play a really good opponent," Key said. "I think this is a really good matchup. When you look at bowl games, that's what you look for, the matchups. And I think they got this one right." Georgia Tech quarterback Haynes King's 1,910 passing yards and 22 total touchdowns (11 passing, 11 rushing) have steadied the offense throughout the year, but the Yellow Jackets will be without their leading receiver, Eric Singleton Jr., who entered the transfer portal after the regular season and signed with Auburn on Monday. Starting defensive lineman Romello Height also transferred, meaning a next-man-up mentality will be in order for Key's squad. "One person is not going to make a difference as far as rotational depth," Key said. "We're going to continue to coach the guys that are here, and prepare them not only for this game but for the rest of their careers here at Georgia Tech." Singleton paced Georgia Tech with 754 receiving yards to go along with four total touchdowns, while Height tallied 2 1/2 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles. It wouldn't have surprised many college football pundits had Vanderbilt missed the postseason for a sixth straight year. The Commodores (6-6) were predicted last by a wide margin in the SEC preseason poll coming off last year's winless conference slate. However, the program's historic season can now be punctuated with its first bowl win in 11 years, thanks to a shocking Oct. 5 victory over No. 1 Alabama, along with its first win all-time at Auburn. Led by head coach Clark Lea, the revamped Commodores see a similar program on Friday in Birmingham. "Georgia Tech is a team I've taken notes on as Brent has built that program up," Lea said. "What an incredible transformation they've had; so much respect for them. ... This is our 10th bowl game in 134 years, it's a chance for our first winning season since 2013. You're going to have two teams that play a physical brand of football, two head coaches that care deeply about the institutions we represent. "These are two teams that are going to fight for a win and I don't think it gets better than that." The Commodores are led by quarterback Diego Pavia, who had 2,133 passing yards and 17 touchdowns in the air, paired with 716 rushing yards and six scores on the ground. Pavia, a transfer from New Mexico State -- and New Mexico Military Institute at the juco level -- won a court ruling last week that granted him a seventh year of eligibility in 2025. --Field Level Media

5 Eagles thoughts: Flushing a loss, a potential playoff rematch with Washington and more

the peanut farmer who tried to restore virtue to the White House after the Watergate scandal and Vietnam War, then rebounded from a landslide defeat to become a global advocate of human rights and democracy, has died. . The Carter Center said the 39th president died Sunday, , at his home in Plains, Georgia, where he and his wife, who died in November 2023, lived most of their lives. A moderate Democrat, as a little-known Georgia governor with a broad grin, effusive Baptist faith and technocratic plans for efficient government. His promise to never deceive the American people resonated after Richard Nixon’s disgrace and U.S. defeat in southeast Asia. “If I ever lie to you, if I ever make a misleading statement, don’t vote for me. I would not deserve to be your president,” Carter said. Carter’s victory over Republican Gerald Ford, whose fortunes fell after pardoning Nixon, came amid Cold War pressures, turbulent oil markets and social upheaval over race, women’s rights and America’s role in the world. His achievements included brokering Mideast peace by keeping Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin at Camp David for 13 days in 1978. But his coalition splintered under double-digit inflation and the 444-day hostage crisis in Iran. His negotiations ultimately brought all the hostages home alive, but in a final insult, Iran didn’t release them until the inauguration of Ronald Reagan, who had trounced him in the 1980 election. Humbled and back home in Georgia, Carter said his faith demanded that he keep doing whatever he could, for as long as he could, to try to make a difference. He and Rosalynn co-founded in 1982 and spent the next 40 years traveling the world as peacemakers, human rights advocates and champions of democracy and public health. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, Carter helped ease nuclear tensions in North and South Korea, avert a U.S. invasion of Haiti and and Sudan. By 2022, the center had monitored at least 113 elections around the world. Carter was determined to as one of many health initiatives. the Carters built homes with Habitat for Humanity. The common observation that he was better as an ex-president rankled Carter. His allies were pleased that he lived long enough to see biographers and historians and declare it more impactful than many understood at the time. Propelled in 1976 by voters in Iowa and then across the South, Carter ran a no-frills campaign. Americans were captivated by the earnest engineer, and while an election-year Playboy interview drew snickers when he said he “had looked on many women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times,” voters tired of political cynicism found it endearing. The first family set an informal tone in the White House, carrying their own luggage, trying to silence the Marine Band’s traditional “Hail to the Chief” and enrolling daughter, Amy, in public schools. Carter was lampooned for wearing a cardigan and urging Americans to turn down their thermostats. But Carter set the stage for an economic revival and sharply reduced America’s dependence on foreign oil by deregulating the energy industry along with airlines, trains and trucking. He established the departments of Energy and Education, appointed record numbers of women and nonwhites to federal posts, preserved millions of acres of Alaskan wilderness and pardoned most Vietnam draft evaders. , he ended most support for military dictators and took on bribery by multinational corporations by signing the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. He persuaded the Senate to ratify the Panama Canal treaties and normalized relations with China, an outgrowth of Nixon’s outreach to Beijing. But crippling turns in foreign affairs took their toll. When OPEC hiked crude prices, making drivers line up for gasoline as inflation spiked to 11%, Carter tried to encourage Americans to overcome “a crisis of confidence.” Many voters lost confidence in Carter instead after the infamous address that media dubbed his “malaise” speech, even though he never used that word. After Carter reluctantly agreed to admit the exiled Shah of Iran to the U.S. for medical treatment, the American Embassy in Tehran was overrun in 1979. Negotiations to quickly free the hostages broke down, and then eight Americans died when a top-secret military rescue attempt failed. Carter also had to reverse course on the SALT II nuclear arms treaty after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979. Though historians would later credit Carter’s diplomatic efforts for hastening the end of the Cold war, Republicans labeled his soft power weak. Reagan’s “make America great again” appeals resonated, and he beat Carter in all but six states. Born Oct. 1, 1924, James Earl Carter Jr. in 1946, the year he graduated from the Naval Academy. He brought his young family back to Plains after his father died, abandoning his Navy career, and . Carter reached the state Senate in 1962. After rural white and Black voters elected him governor in 1970, he drew national attention by declaring that “the time for racial discrimination is over.” Carter published more than 30 books and remained influential as his center turned its democracy advocacy onto U.S. politics, monitoring an audit of Georgia’s 2020 presidential election results. After Carter said he felt “perfectly at ease with whatever comes.” “I’ve had a wonderful life,” “I’ve had thousands of friends, I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.” ___NFC North in Week 13: Detroit Lions use stingy defense to beat Indianapolis Colts 24-6 for 9th straight win

Tantalizers Plc has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to acquire all assets of DanBethel Marine Services Limited, an Apapa-based marine and fishing enterprise. This follows Tantalizers’ recent announcement of a N1 billion private equity injection by Messrs Food Specialties and Banklink Africa Private Equities, which jointly acquired a majority stake in the company. In light of the recent N1 billion capital injection, Tantalizers announced on December 28, 2024, through an NGX disclosure, its decision to acquire all assets of DanBethel Marine Services Limited. Related Stories Briscoe, Tantalizers, Oando unfazed as ASI declines by 1.16% in the third week of August Ministry of Housing, consortium sign MOU to deliver 100,000 affordable housing units According to the announcement on the NGX platform, this planned acquisition aligns with Tantalizers’ strategy to expand into the blue economy, with a particular focus on the seafood industry. The statement highlights the company’s intention to engage in industrial fish trawling, aquaculture, mariculture, seafood supplies, and related marine operations. Commenting on the MoU signing, Tope Fagbamila, MD/CEO of DanBethel, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “ Our team admires the courage and capacity of the new Tantalizer’s leadership and are excited to be part of pivoting the company to a new height.” Adam Nuru, Chairman of Tantalizers Plc, echoed this sentiment, adding, “ DanBethel’s acquisition is an excellent strategic fit for us as we further invest over the next five years in the company’s fleet to capture significant opportunities in the largely unexplored Nigerian fishing and aquaculture industry.” Apapa-Lagos-based DanBethel Marine Services is known for its fleet of fishing trawlers and related marine assets. Over time, it has built a notable presence in Nigeria’s domestic seafood supply market. As demand for healthier protein sources and more sustainable food systems continues to rise, the MoU agreement provides Tantalizers with an opportunity to explore new business segments in the marine industry. DanBethel’s decades of experience in fish trawling and processing may help Tantalizers Plc tap into broader opportunities in seafood production, supply chain integration, and value-added aquaculture processes. Tantalizers has recorded a year-to-date (YTD) growth of 266% in the Nigerian stock market for 2024. The share price opened at N0.47 and moved upward through mid-year, with a more pronounced rise starting in August. From January to October, the trend remained positive, then picked up pace in November likely following the announcement of a N1 billion private equity injection—resulting in a share price increase from N0.64 to over N1.70 by year-end. According to the company, the capital injection aims to address longstanding financial issues and help reposition Tantalizers for the future. The capital was provided by Messrs Food Specialties and Organics Limited, along with Banklink Africa Private Equities Limited, both of which acquired a majority stake in the company.

Swept by Jags, Titans alone in AFC South basementPLAINS, Ga. (AP) — Newly married and sworn as a Naval officer, Jimmy Carter left his tiny hometown in 1946 hoping to climb the ranks and see the world. Less than a decade later, the death of his father and namesake, a merchant farmer and local politician who went by “Mr. Earl,” prompted the submariner and his wife, Rosalynn, to return to the rural life of Plains, Georgia, they thought they’d escaped. The lieutenant never would be an admiral. Instead, he became commander in chief. Years after his presidency ended in humbling defeat, he would add a Nobel Peace Prize, awarded not for his White House accomplishments but “for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.” The life of James Earl Carter Jr., the 39th and longest-lived U.S. president, ended Sunday at the age of 100 where it began: Plains, the town of 600 that fueled his political rise, welcomed him after his fall and sustained him during 40 years of service that redefined what it means to be a former president. With the stubborn confidence of an engineer and an optimism rooted in his Baptist faith, Carter described his motivations in politics and beyond in the same way: an almost missionary zeal to solve problems and improve lives. Carter was raised amid racism, abject poverty and hard rural living — realities that shaped both his deliberate politics and emphasis on human rights. “He always felt a responsibility to help people,” said Jill Stuckey, a longtime friend of Carter's in Plains. “And when he couldn’t make change wherever he was, he decided he had to go higher.” Carter's path, a mix of happenstance and calculation , pitted moral imperatives against political pragmatism; and it defied typical labels of American politics, especially caricatures of one-term presidents as failures. “We shouldn’t judge presidents by how popular they are in their day. That's a very narrow way of assessing them," Carter biographer Jonathan Alter told the Associated Press. “We should judge them by how they changed the country and the world for the better. On that score, Jimmy Carter is not in the first rank of American presidents, but he stands up quite well.” Later in life, Carter conceded that many Americans, even those too young to remember his tenure, judged him ineffective for failing to contain inflation or interest rates, end the energy crisis or quickly bring home American hostages in Iran. He gained admirers instead for his work at The Carter Center — advocating globally for public health, human rights and democracy since 1982 — and the decades he and Rosalynn wore hardhats and swung hammers with Habitat for Humanity. Yet the common view that he was better after the Oval Office than in it annoyed Carter, and his allies relished him living long enough to see historians reassess his presidency. “He doesn’t quite fit in today’s terms” of a left-right, red-blue scoreboard, said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who visited the former president multiple times during his own White House bid. At various points in his political career, Carter labeled himself “progressive” or “conservative” — sometimes both at once. His most ambitious health care bill failed — perhaps one of his biggest legislative disappointments — because it didn’t go far enough to suit liberals. Republicans, especially after his 1980 defeat, cast him as a left-wing cartoon. It would be easiest to classify Carter as a centrist, Buttigieg said, “but there’s also something radical about the depth of his commitment to looking after those who are left out of society and out of the economy.” Indeed, Carter’s legacy is stitched with complexities, contradictions and evolutions — personal and political. The self-styled peacemaker was a war-trained Naval Academy graduate who promised Democratic challenger Ted Kennedy that he’d “kick his ass.” But he campaigned with a call to treat everyone with “respect and compassion and with love.” Carter vowed to restore America’s virtue after the shame of Vietnam and Watergate, and his technocratic, good-government approach didn't suit Republicans who tagged government itself as the problem. It also sometimes put Carter at odds with fellow Democrats. The result still was a notable legislative record, with wins on the environment, education, and mental health care. He dramatically expanded federally protected lands, began deregulating air travel, railroads and trucking, and he put human rights at the center of U.S. foreign policy. As a fiscal hawk, Carter added a relative pittance to the national debt, unlike successors from both parties. Carter nonetheless struggled to make his achievements resonate with the electorate he charmed in 1976. Quoting Bob Dylan and grinning enthusiastically, he had promised voters he would “never tell a lie.” Once in Washington, though, he led like a joyless engineer, insisting his ideas would become reality and he'd be rewarded politically if only he could convince enough people with facts and logic. This served him well at Camp David, where he brokered peace between Israel’s Menachem Begin and Epypt’s Anwar Sadat, an experience that later sparked the idea of The Carter Center in Atlanta. Carter's tenacity helped the center grow to a global force that monitored elections across five continents, enabled his freelance diplomacy and sent public health experts across the developing world. The center’s wins were personal for Carter, who hoped to outlive the last Guinea worm parasite, and nearly did. As president, though, the approach fell short when he urged consumers beleaguered by energy costs to turn down their thermostats. Or when he tried to be the nation’s cheerleader, beseeching Americans to overcome a collective “crisis of confidence.” Republican Ronald Reagan exploited Carter's lecturing tone with a belittling quip in their lone 1980 debate. “There you go again,” the former Hollywood actor said in response to a wonky answer from the sitting president. “The Great Communicator” outpaced Carter in all but six states. Carter later suggested he “tried to do too much, too soon” and mused that he was incompatible with Washington culture: media figures, lobbyists and Georgetown social elites who looked down on the Georgians and their inner circle as “country come to town.” Carter carefully navigated divides on race and class on his way to the Oval Office. Born Oct. 1, 1924 , Carter was raised in the mostly Black community of Archery, just outside Plains, by a progressive mother and white supremacist father. Their home had no running water or electricity but the future president still grew up with the relative advantages of a locally prominent, land-owning family in a system of Jim Crow segregation. He wrote of President Franklin Roosevelt’s towering presence and his family’s Democratic Party roots, but his father soured on FDR, and Jimmy Carter never campaigned or governed as a New Deal liberal. He offered himself as a small-town peanut farmer with an understated style, carrying his own luggage, bunking with supporters during his first presidential campaign and always using his nickname. And he began his political career in a whites-only Democratic Party. As private citizens, he and Rosalynn supported integration as early as the 1950s and believed it inevitable. Carter refused to join the White Citizens Council in Plains and spoke out in his Baptist church against denying Black people access to worship services. “This is not my house; this is not your house,” he said in a churchwide meeting, reminding fellow parishioners their sanctuary belonged to God. Yet as the appointed chairman of Sumter County schools he never pushed to desegregate, thinking it impractical after the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board decision. And while presidential candidate Carter would hail the 1965 Voting Rights Act, signed by fellow Democrat Lyndon Johnson when Carter was a state senator, there is no record of Carter publicly supporting it at the time. Carter overcame a ballot-stuffing opponent to win his legislative seat, then lost the 1966 governor's race to an arch-segregationist. He won four years later by avoiding explicit mentions of race and campaigning to the right of his rival, who he mocked as “Cufflinks Carl” — the insult of an ascendant politician who never saw himself as part the establishment. Carter’s rural and small-town coalition in 1970 would match any victorious Republican electoral map in 2024. Once elected, though, Carter shocked his white conservative supporters — and landed on the cover of Time magazine — by declaring that “the time for racial discrimination is over.” Before making the jump to Washington, Carter befriended the family of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., whom he’d never sought out as he eyed the governor’s office. Carter lamented his foot-dragging on school integration as a “mistake.” But he also met, conspicuously, with Alabama's segregationist Gov. George Wallace to accept his primary rival's endorsement ahead of the 1976 Democratic convention. “He very shrewdly took advantage of his own Southerness,” said Amber Roessner, a University of Tennessee professor and expert on Carter’s campaigns. A coalition of Black voters and white moderate Democrats ultimately made Carter the last Democratic presidential nominee to sweep the Deep South. Then, just as he did in Georgia, he used his power in office to appoint more non-whites than all his predecessors had, combined. He once acknowledged “the secret shame” of white Americans who didn’t fight segregation. But he also told Alter that doing more would have sacrificed his political viability – and thus everything he accomplished in office and after. King's daughter, Bernice King, described Carter as wisely “strategic” in winning higher offices to enact change. “He was a leader of conscience,” she said in an interview. Rosalynn Carter, who died on Nov. 19 at the age of 96, was identified by both husband and wife as the “more political” of the pair; she sat in on Cabinet meetings and urged him to postpone certain priorities, like pressing the Senate to relinquish control of the Panama Canal. “Let that go until the second term,” she would sometimes say. The president, recalled her former aide Kathy Cade, retorted that he was “going to do what’s right” even if “it might cut short the time I have.” Rosalynn held firm, Cade said: “She’d remind him you have to win to govern.” Carter also was the first president to appoint multiple women as Cabinet officers. Yet by his own telling, his career sprouted from chauvinism in the Carters' early marriage: He did not consult Rosalynn when deciding to move back to Plains in 1953 or before launching his state Senate bid a decade later. Many years later, he called it “inconceivable” that he didn’t confer with the woman he described as his “full partner,” at home, in government and at The Carter Center. “We developed a partnership when we were working in the farm supply business, and it continued when Jimmy got involved in politics,” Rosalynn Carter told AP in 2021. So deep was their trust that when Carter remained tethered to the White House in 1980 as 52 Americans were held hostage in Tehran, it was Rosalynn who campaigned on her husband’s behalf. “I just loved it,” she said, despite the bitterness of defeat. Fair or not, the label of a disastrous presidency had leading Democrats keep their distance, at least publicly, for many years, but Carter managed to remain relevant, writing books and weighing in on societal challenges. He lamented widening wealth gaps and the influence of money in politics. He voted for democratic socialist Bernie Sanders over Hillary Clinton in 2016, and later declared that America had devolved from fully functioning democracy to “oligarchy.” Yet looking ahead to 2020, with Sanders running again, Carter warned Democrats not to “move to a very liberal program,” lest they help re-elect President Donald Trump. Carter scolded the Republican for his serial lies and threats to democracy, and chided the U.S. establishment for misunderstanding Trump’s populist appeal. He delighted in yearly convocations with Emory University freshmen, often asking them to guess how much he’d raised in his two general election campaigns. “Zero,” he’d gesture with a smile, explaining the public financing system candidates now avoid so they can raise billions. Carter still remained quite practical in partnering with wealthy corporations and foundations to advance Carter Center programs. Carter recognized that economic woes and the Iran crisis doomed his presidency, but offered no apologies for appointing Paul Volcker as the Federal Reserve chairman whose interest rate hikes would not curb inflation until Reagan's presidency. He was proud of getting all the hostages home without starting a shooting war, even though Tehran would not free them until Reagan's Inauguration Day. “Carter didn’t look at it” as a failure, Alter emphasized. “He said, ‘They came home safely.’ And that’s what he wanted.” Well into their 90s, the Carters greeted visitors at Plains’ Maranatha Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and where he will have his last funeral before being buried on family property alongside Rosalynn . Carter, who made the congregation’s collection plates in his woodworking shop, still garnered headlines there, calling for women’s rights within religious institutions, many of which, he said, “subjugate” women in church and society. Carter was not one to dwell on regrets. “I am at peace with the accomplishments, regret the unrealized goals and utilize my former political position to enhance everything we do,” he wrote around his 90th birthday. The politician who had supposedly hated Washington politics also enjoyed hosting Democratic presidential contenders as public pilgrimages to Plains became advantageous again. Carter sat with Buttigieg for the final time March 1, 2020, hours before the Indiana mayor ended his campaign and endorsed eventual winner Joe Biden. “He asked me how I thought the campaign was going,” Buttigieg said, recalling that Carter flashed his signature grin and nodded along as the young candidate, born a year after Carter left office, “put the best face” on the walloping he endured the day before in South Carolina. Never breaking his smile, the 95-year-old host fired back, “I think you ought to drop out.” “So matter of fact,” Buttigieg said with a laugh. “It was somehow encouraging.” Carter had lived enough, won plenty and lost enough to take the long view. “He talked a lot about coming from nowhere,” Buttigieg said, not just to attain the presidency but to leverage “all of the instruments you have in life” and “make the world more peaceful.” In his farewell address as president, Carter said as much to the country that had embraced and rejected him. “The struggle for human rights overrides all differences of color, nation or language,” he declared. “Those who hunger for freedom, who thirst for human dignity and who suffer for the sake of justice — they are the patriots of this cause.” Carter pledged to remain engaged with and for them as he returned “home to the South where I was born and raised,” home to Plains, where that young lieutenant had indeed become “a fellow citizen of the world.” —- Bill Barrow, based in Atlanta, has covered national politics including multiple presidential campaigns for the AP since 2012.JPMorgan Chase & Co. Lucknow Super Giants Squad for IPL 2025: Abdul Samad Sold to LSG for INR 4.2 Crore at Indian Premier League AuctionTransMedics to Participate in the 43rd Annual J.P. Morgan Healthcare ConferenceSACRAMENTO, Calif. — All the talk about holiday travel this week has a Chico area family reminding people to hang onto their pets. A recent visit to pick up relatives at the Sacramento International Airport left their dog, gone , for over 30 hours. “He bolted,” said Charlie the dog’s human, Anna Farrell. “He bolted and then he was gone.” Gone in a flash after jumping out of their truck as they sat curbside at Terminal A. “We had some dark thoughts when we found out he was running across roads,” she said. Farrell explained to KCRA 3 the agony of knowing her precious pup was wandering the airport property without her, but she was unwilling to believe she'd seen the last of him. “We can't give up on Charlie,” Farrell repeatedly said in her head during the hours he was missing. So she enlisted help from those with eyes on all things airport. The dispatchers from Sacramento International's communications center combed through various camera angles. “It ran like a streak across the screen,” said senior dispatcher Lona Bradford. “I looked through bushes and anywhere I could get camera range, I was looking.” But then the trail started to go cold. “I just couldn't find the dog anywhere after I lost him on video,” Bradford said. With hours ticking by and concern growing deeper, the Farrell family continued a ground search, created a flyer and connected with everyone they encountered. “Dispatchers, shuttle drivers, the guys who drive around security,” Farrell said. “There wasn't one person who didn't make an effort, and said, 'OK, we're gonna look out for him.'” Kind strangers even joined the search after seeing Charlie's story on lost animal social media pages. “He's such a sweet dog,” said Jordan Brace, a high school student who showed up with her mom to assist. “I was just like, I need to come help because I love animals so much.” Then, finally, that collective effort paid off. “I got the call at 6:05 a.m.,” Farrell said. A shuttle driver spotted Charlie running from the economy lot to the daily lot so she raced to that location. She spotted the dog and managed to coax him back into her arms – immediately overcome with emotion. “I was just screaming/crying,” Farrell said. “I couldn't believe I had him. Farrell completely credits her daughter Jacqueline for staying positive and motivated to continue the search. And she’s grateful for all those on board for the 30-plus-hour search mission. Meanwhile, Charlie is keeping close to his loved ones these days and is all "adventured out" after his holiday time ordeal. After everything that happened, Charlie now wears an AirTag tracker on his collar and the family has a seat belt restrainer for him in the car. “We just feel beyond lucky that we got him back,” Farrell said. “We know that you just don’t give up.” See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter

WASHINGTON (AP) — One year after the Jan. 6, 2021 , U.S. Capitol attack, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department was committed to holding accountable all perpetrators “at any level” for “the assault on our democracy.” That bold declaration won't apply to at least one person: Donald Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith's move on Monday to abandon the federal election interference case against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate classified documents case against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump's political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Trump's presidential victory has thrown into question the future of the two state criminal cases against him in New York and Georgia. Trump was supposed to be sentenced on Tuesday after his conviction on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money case , but it's possible the sentencing could be delayed until after Trump leaves office, and the defense is pushing to dismiss the case altogether. Smith's team stressed that their decision to abandon the federal cases was not a reflection of the merit of the charges, but an acknowledgement that they could not move forward under longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Trump's presidential victory set “at odds two fundamental and compelling national interests: On the one hand, the Constitution’s requirement that the President must not be unduly encumbered in fulfilling his weighty responsibilities . . . and on the other hand, the Nation’s commitment to the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote in court papers. The move just weeks after Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris underscores the immense personal stake Trump had in the campaign in which he turned his legal woes into a political rallying cry. Trump accused prosecutors of bringing the charges in a bid to keep him out of the White House, and he promised revenge on his perceived enemies if he won a second term. “If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison,” Vice President-elect JD Vance, wrote in a social media post on Monday. “These prosecutions were always political. Now it’s time to ensure what happened to President Trump never happens in this country again.” After the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters that left more than 100 police officers injured, Republican leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republicans who voted to acquit Trump during his Senate impeachment trial said it was up to the justice system to hold Trump accountable. The Jan. 6 case brought last year in Washington alleged an increasingly desperate criminal conspiracy to subvert the will of voters after Trump's 2020 loss, accusing Trump of using the angry mob of supporters that attacked the Capitol as “a tool” in his campaign to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence and obstruct the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory. Hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters — many of whom have said they felt called to Washington by Trump — have pleaded guilty or been convicted by juries of federal charges at the same courthouse where Trump was supposed to stand trial last year. As the trial date neared, officials at the courthouse that sits within view of the Capitol were busy making plans for the crush of reporters expected to cover the historic case. But Trump's argument that he enjoyed absolute immunity from prosecution quickly tied up the case in appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. The high court ruled in July that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution , and sent the case back to the trial court to decide which allegations could move forward. But the case was dismissed before the trial court could get a chance to do so. The other indictment brought in Florida accused Trump of improperly storing at his Mar-a-Lago estate sensitive documents on nuclear capabilities, enlisting aides and lawyers to help him hide records demanded by investigators and cavalierly showing off a Pentagon “plan of attack” and classified map. But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case in July on grounds that Smith was illegally appointed . Smith appealed to the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but abandoned that appeal on Monday. Smith's team said it would continue its fight in the appeals court to revive charges against Trump's two co-defendants because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” In New York, jurors spent weeks last spring hearing evidence in a state case alleging a Trump scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex. New York prosecutors recently expressed openness to delaying sentencing until after Trump's second term, while Trump's lawyers are fighting to have the conviction dismissed altogether. In Georgia, a trial while Trump is in office seems unlikely in a state case charging him and more than a dozen others with conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. The case has been on hold since an appeals court agreed to review whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she had hired to lead the case. Associated Press reporter Lisa Mascaro in Washington contributed.

There are a lot of atrocities from the October 7, 2023 Hamas terror attack in Israel. The murders, the burning of innocent Israelis, the savagery that Hamas recorded -- it's too horrific for words. One of the things Hamas recorded themselves doing was raping women during the terror attack. And in the aftermath, some on the Left defended the use of sexual violence as part of Hamas 'resistance' to Israeli 'genocide' (there is no genocide). Others flat-out denied it, despite video evidence . Former Congressional Rep. Jamaal Bowman even called claims of sexual violence 'propaganda' ( something he later apologized for ). The sexual violence was so egregious, even Planned Parenthood condemned Hamas . But the Left love their terrorists more than they love the 'Me Too' movement, which is why a woman with a simple sign and a simple message, can trigger them so much. WATCH: She doesn't have to say a thing. Because she's right. My favorite image of the year. Her protest symbolizes so perfectly the power/strength of the truth. The truth doesn’t need to shout and all the shouting of the rabid liars doesn’t change the truth one bit. All of this. The screaming woman perfectly represents the “tolerant left” Straight outta central casting. I do not get it. Is the women yelling trying to say that it is ok to rape as a part of resistance or what is happening here? That's exactly what she's doing. Rape is NOT resistance. 🙏🏻🇮🇱💪🏻🎗️ It is not. ...... and worse requires armed police protection at all times. So sad From the oh-so-tolerant Left. I can’t wrap my brain around the concept that there are Muslims out there who actually have a problem with that statement. What kind of sick minded individuals are they? Not just Muslims. Leftists. Leftists are okay with sexual violence in the furtherance of their preferred political causes. That's scary. Leftists are nuts. https://t.co/dnlovpbkLG In a word, yes. 2024 is year we learned people lose their S**T over a sign reading: Rape is not resistance. 😳 https://t.co/46ZMkavRFS That's the Left. I wish a ton of people could see this woman. This is what nonviolent protest truly looks like. 1) She's prepared to suffer the consequences that come from necessary protest. 2) The protest speaks for itself. She doesn't have to speak, though not a requirement. The protest... https://t.co/jHMdHffxe5 Everyone should see her. Here's the woman in question, taking on her critics: „Maybe the rat should be silenced forever.“ Really?!! Darling, then tomorrow there will be another woman in my place. 👭 RAPE! IS! NOT! Google has rolled out a new "feature" on its iPhone app that essentially injects its own links to websites. They are calling this "page annotations" which detects notable names, places, and things mentioned on a webpage (likely good targets for search queries with good ad performance), highlights them, and turns them into links that load up more info from Google when tapped. The idea, Google notes in its Web Search Forums, is to let users "quickly get additional context about people, places or things – without leaving the site they're on." When you tap one of the annotated terms, it opens an overlay window on top of the website showing a Google knowledge panel with more details pulled from the search engine's database. On the surface, it sounds like a handy way to get quick context while browsing. But there are those concerned about Google injecting its own links and content over the top of their websites. It's not quite as egregious as some of the other anti-competitive practices Google has been accused of, but it's another example of the search giant's dominance over the web. To be fair (but not really), Google is allowing website owners to " opt out " of the feature by filling out a form, though it notes that opt-outs can take up to 30 days to go into effect. Just Spotted! Googles New Fake Links On Websites That Take You To A New Google Search! JUST Saw This On A Search Engine Roundtable Article. It Highlights The Text And Then A New SERP Pops Up Inside The Page. This Along With Other Moves Keeps Making Me Think That They Are Doing... pic.twitter.com/x9n6N57Pwn The move comes at a sensitive time for Google, which is facing intensifying antitrust scrutiny and calls to have its search monopoly reined in. Just recently, the US Department of Justice suggested forcing it to sell off Chrome as a potential remedy for its allegedly anti-competitive behavior. It's worth mentioning that in its initial description of this Google app feature, they vaguely state that clicking the annotated links directs users to its own search results page for that entity. However, it later clarified to Search Engine Roundtable that the annotations actually open an "app tray" overlay on the same third-party webpage – without navigating the user away from the original site. If the user wants to return to the third-party content, they can simply close the app tray overlay. The underpinning technology behind Page Annotations seems similar to a new ad format Google launched earlier this year that turns webpage text into sponsored links leading to Google searches.

Spain’s solar power poised to surpass wind powerThe US dollar closed for the first time above the psychological R$ 6 barrier on another turbulent day in Brazil's markets, Agencia Brasil reported. The local scene continued to reverberate after the spending cut package announced earlier this week by Finance Minister Fernando Haddad, also impacting the stock exchange scene during the day. The commercial dollar closed Friday at R$6.001, up just 0.19%, after reaching R$ 6.11 at around 10.15 am. It eventually went back down after statements from Haddad and Senate Speaker Rodrigo Pacheco. Friday's was the highest rate since the creation of the real, representing a 3.21% rise this week and 3.8% in November. The commercial euro ended the day up 0.41% at R$6.348. Brazil's Central Bank (BCB) did not intervene in the exchange rate. In the stock market, the day was marked by a recovery. After a turbulent morning, B3's Ibovespa index closed at 125,668 points, up 0.85%. At around 11.30 a.m., the indicator fell by 0.53% but reversed the movement and began to rise in the afternoon. Despite Friday's advance, the stock market lost 2.46% for the week, its worst weekly performance since mid-September. In November, the Ibovespa shrank by 2.9%. The dollar reached zero after Rodrigo Pacheco made raising the income tax exemption to R$5,000 conditional on the tax situation. Later, at an event organized by the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban), Haddad said that the government could review measures in the tax package sent to Congress, if necessary.Russia promised to continue testing its new ballistic missile on the battlefield as NATO leaders rushed to arrange an emergency meeting with Ukraine for Tuesday following the Kremlin’s debut of it latest weapon. Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Moscow had additional stockpiles of its new Oreshnik missile used to strike a military facility in the central Ukrainian city of Dnipro this week. “We will continue these tests, including in combat conditions, depending on the situation and the nature of the security threats that are created for Russia,” Putin said in televised comments. “Moreover, we have a stock of such products, a stock of such systems ready for use.” Moscow said Thursday’s hair-raising attack was retaliation over a pair of attacks Ukraine carried out earlier in the week, using long-range US and British-made missiles . Kyiv pleaded for months for approval from its Western allies to launch the weapons directly into Russia, while US leaders feared it would escalate the conflict. “The Russian side has clearly demonstrated its capabilities, and the contours of further retaliatory actions in the event that our concerns were not taken into account have also been quite clearly outlined,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. Gen. Sergei Karakayev, head of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, warned the Oreshnik could reach targets across Europe and be outfitted with conventional or nuclear warheads. Even with just conventional warheads, he added, “the massive use of the weapon would be comparable in effect to the use of nuclear weapons.” Ukraine’s parliament canceled a scheduled session Friday as security was tightened following Thursday’s strike. Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský deemed the missile strike an “escalatory step and an attempt of the Russian dictator to scare the population of Ukraine and to scare the population of Europe.” While likely a sign of escalation in the nearly three-year war between the two nations, Russia’s use of the Oreshnik to strike Ukraine is also signaling “an act of desperation” by Putin, one Polish official told Voice of America. “We see signs of the Russian economy in real stress. We have reports of Russian soldiers deserting,” Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told the outlet , adding that Moscow adding North Korean troops to its forces also “is not exactly a sign of strength.” Ukrainian military officials said the missile launched Thursday reached a speed of Mach 11, or roughly 8,000 miles per hour, and President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Kyiv was already at work to develop new air defense systems capable of deflecting future Oreshnik strikes. Experts, however, believe Russia is overstating how “new” the Oreshnik actually is, suggesting that the much-discussed weapon is actually just a modified version of the RS-26 Rubezh missile that was first produced back in 2011. “I think basically they just took apart the RS-26 or just cannibalized it, and then put together this new missile with a couple of upgrades, and a new paint job,” Fabian Hoffmann, a defense expert and doctoral research fellow at the University of Oslo, told the Kyiv Independent . “I think it’s really important that we don’t overreact,” he added. SM approaches 2025 with cautious optimismLarge fossil fuel companies would have to pay fees to help New York fight the effects of climate change under a bill signed Thursday by Gov. Kathy Hochul. The new law requires companies responsible for substantial greenhouse gas emissions to pay into a state fund for infrastructure projects meant to repair or avoid future damage from climate change. Lawmakers approved the bill earlier this year to force big oil and gas companies to contribute to the cost of repairs after extreme weather events and resiliency projects such as coastal wetland restoration and upgrades to roads, bridges and water drainage systems. “The Climate Change Superfund Act is now law, and New York has fired a shot that will be heard round the world: the companies most responsible for the climate crisis will be held accountable," said state Sen. Liz Krueger, a Democrat who sponsored the bill. “The planet’s largest climate polluters bear a unique responsibility for creating the climate crisis, and they must pay their fair share to help regular New Yorkers deal with the consequences,” Krueger said. The biggest emitters of greenhouse gases between 2000 and 2018 would be subjected to the fines. The law won't start penalizing companies immediately. Instead, the state must come up with rules on how to identify responsible parties, notify companies of the fines and create a system to determine which infrastructure projects will be paid for by the fund. Legal challenges are expected. “This type of legislation represents nothing more than a punitive new fee on American energy, and we are evaluating our options moving forward,” the American Petroleum Institute, the oil industry’s top lobbying group, said in a statement. New York's governor signed the measure months after Vermont put a similar law in place.
