WESTON, W.Va. (WV News) — The Lewis County Senior Center will host its second annual Chili Cook-off on Wednesday, Jan. 22, offering a chance for residents to showcase their culinary skills or enjoy a warm, community-focused event. The cookoff is free to attend and open to the public, making it an ideal outing for families and friends. For those interested in competing, there is no cost to enter. Participants are encouraged to bring their best chili recipes, whether classic favorites or new creations to share with the community. Judging will begin promptly at noon that Wednesday. Attendees who purchase a $5 tasting ticket will serve as judges, ensuring a fun and interactive experience for everyone involved, according to event organizers. Belinda Lewis, activities director at the Lewis County Senior Center, shared her enthusiasm for the event, noting that last year’s inaugural cookoff was a resounding success. “It went really well last year, and so I decided to try and make it bigger and better this year,” she said. She emphasized the event’s importance not only as a culinary competition but also as a social gathering. “I am hoping that the word got out last year that it was really fun and successful and it was just a really good time,” she said. “Not only did people bring in their chili and taste the other chili, but it was really a social event too because they sat around, joked, and, as an activities director, that is what I am looking for — things that bring people together and put them in social situations.” All money that will be raised during the chili cook-off will go towards benefiting the Lewis County Senior Center, Lewis said. “The money raised will go towards our activities,” she said. “Of course we want to offer some kind of prize for the first- and second-place finishers. Last year, I found these tiny chef’s hats and it said, “chili cook-off first place, second place and third place,’ and that is what we used as prizes. Part of the money will go towards the prizes we want to give out this year, and the other half will go towards our activities for the seniors.” Weston’s Lynn Lynch, last year’s first-place winner, reflected on her positive experience at the first Chili Cook-off. “My experience was great,” she said. “I just cooked my homemade chili and won first place. I am known for my chili and lasagna. But this was my first time ever winning first place at a cook-off.” She emphasized the importance of the Senior Center hosting events like the Chili Cook-off for the community, Lynch said. “It’s just a fun way of making money, getting to meet other people, and I would do anything for Belinda Lewis,” she said. “Any time you break bread with someone and sit down and share a meal together ... it creates a bond.”

HUAWEI nova 13 Series Debuts: Redefining Design, Camera, and ExperienceBy ERIC TUCKER WASHINGTON (AP) — A ninth U.S. telecoms firm has been confirmed to have been hacked as part of a sprawling Chinese espionage campaign that gave officials in Beijing access to private texts and phone conversations of an unknown number of Americans, a top White House official said Friday. Biden administration officials said this month that at least eight telecommunications companies , as well as dozens of nations, had been affected by the Chinese hacking blitz known as Salt Typhoon. But Anne Neuberger, the deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technologies, told reporters Friday that a ninth victim had been identified after the administration released guidance to companies about how to hunt for Chinese culprits in their networks. The update from Neuberger is the latest development in a massive hacking operation that has alarmed national security officials, exposed cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the private sector and laid bare China’s hacking sophistication. The hackers compromised the networks of telecommunications companies to obtain customer call records and gain access to the private communications of “a limited number of individuals.” Though the FBI has not publicly identified any of the victims, officials believe senior U.S. government officials and prominent political figures are among those whose whose communications were accessed. Is this the new normal? Neuberger said officials did not yet have a precise sense how many Americans overall were affected by Salt Typhoon, in part because the Chinese were careful about their techniques, but a “large number” were in the Washington-Virginia area. Officials believe the goal of the hackers was to identify who owned the phones and, if they were “government targets of interest,” spy on their texts and phone calls, she said. The FBI said most of the people targeted by the hackers are “primarily involved in government or political activity.” Neuberger said the episode highlighted the need for required cybersecurity practices in the telecommunications industry, something the Federal Communications Commission is to take up at a meeting next month. “We know that voluntary cyber security practices are inadequate to protect against China, Russia and Iran hacking of our critical infrastructure,” she said. The Chinese government has denied responsibility for the hacking.

The Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation has raised a record breaking $2.7 million through the Grow on Windsor Campaign – with the funds earmarked to purchase the DaVinci Xi Surgical Robot for the centre. The robot replaces a previous DaVinci robot, which has performed robotic procedures on local cancer patients for over a decade. The DaVinci robot is used to perform minimally invasive surgeries on prostate and kidney cancer patients. “The DaVinci Xi represents the type of cutting-edge medical technology that this community wants and deserves. People can stay here to get treatment with confidence knowing that they are getting the very best care close to home. This is also what we need to attract the best and brightest medical professionals. This is the way of the future,” said Dr. Sindu Kanjeekal, Chief of Oncology. The robot has been lauded as a ‘gamechanger’ for cancer care, resulting in shorter hospital stays, faster recovery, improved survival rates, and a reduction in organ trauma.

Calgary Board of Education students showed ‘significant’ attendance improvement: reportThe German government pledged Sunday to fully investigate whether there were security lapses before the Christmas market car-ramming attack that killed five people and injured over 200. Political pressure has built on the question of potential missed warnings about Saudi suspect Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a 50-year-old psychiatrist who had made online deaths threats and previously had trouble with the law. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser and the heads of Germany's domestic and foreign intelligence services are due to answer questions at parliamentary committee hearings on December 30, a senior lawmaker told AFP. Faeser vowed Sunday that "no stone will be left unturned" in shedding light on what information had been available to security services ahead of last Friday's bloody attack in the eastern city of Magdeburg. She stressed that the attacker did "not fit any previous pattern" because "he acted like an Islamist terrorist although ideologically he was clearly an enemy of Islam". Abdulmohsen has in the past called himself a "Saudi atheist" who helped women flee Gulf countries and charged Germany was doing too little to help them. In online posts, he also strongly criticised Germany for allowing in too many Muslim refugees and backed far-right conspiracy theories about the "Islamisation" of Europe. In one post, he wrote: "Is there a path to justice in Germany without blowing up a German embassy or randomly slaughtering German citizens?... If anyone knows it, please let me know." News magazine Der Spiegel, citing security sources, said the Saudi secret service had warned Germany's spy agency BND a year ago about a tweet in which Abdulmohsen threatened Germany would pay a "price" for how it treated Saudi refugees. Die Welt daily reported, also citing security sources, that German state and federal police had carried out a "risk assessment" on Abdulmohsen last year but concluded that he posed "no specific danger". The city of Magdeburg has been in deep mourning over the mass carnage on Friday evening, when an SUV smashed through a crowd at its Christmas market, killing four women and a nine-year-old child and injuring 205 people. Surgeons at overwhelmed hospitals have worked around the clock, and one health worker told local media of "blood on the floor everywhere, people screaming, lots of painkillers being administered". Scholz on Saturday condemned the "terrible, insane" attack and made a call for national unity, at a time Germany is headed for early elections on February 23. But as German media dug into Abdulmohsen's past, and investigators gave away little, criticism rained down from opposition parties. Conservative CDU lawmaker Alexander Throm charged that "many citizens feel... that the Scholz government has completely failed in terms of internal security". He demanded greater police powers to monitor and analyse data from social media platforms, telecommunications and surveillance cameras with facial recognition technology. The far-right AfD called for a special session of parliament, and the head of the far-left BSW party, Sahra Wagenknecht, demanded that Faeser explain "why so many tips and warnings were ignored beforehand". Mass-circulation daily Bild asked: "Why did our police and intelligence services do nothing, even though they had the Saudi on their radar?... And why were the tips from Saudi Arabia apparently ignored?" It charged that "German authorities usually only find out about attack plans in time when foreign services warn them" and called for sweeping reforms after the election for a complete "turnaround in internal security". Senior MP Dirk Wiese of Scholz's Social Democrats said the December 30 hearings will summon the heads of the BND, the domestic intelligence service BfV and the Office for Migration and Refugees. Media meanwhile reported more details on Abdulmohsen, who had worked at a clinic that treats offenders with substance addiction problems, but had been on sick leave since late October. Der Spiegel reported that in 2013 a court fined him for "disturbing the public peace by threatening to commit crimes" after he had darkly referenced the deadly attack on the Boston marathon. The chairwoman of the group Central Council of Ex-Muslims, Mina Ahadi, said Abdulmohsen "is no stranger to us, because he has been terrorising us for years". She labelled him "a psychopath who adheres to ultra-right conspiracy ideologies" and said he "doesn't just hate Muslims, but everyone who doesn't share his hatred." bur/fz/gv
