ORLANDO, Fla. — It was a season of Iowa State comebacks. And fittingly, that’s how it ended for the Cyclones. Game MVP Rocco Becht scored from a yard out on fourth-and-goal with 56 seconds remaining and No. 18 Iowa State capped the best season in school history by rallying past No. 15 Miami 42-41 in the Pop-Tarts Bowl on Saturday. Becht finished with 270 passing yards and three touchdowns for Iowa State (11-2), a program that entered this season — the 133rd year of Cyclone football — never having won more than nine games in a year. “If you look at this team, it’s really who they’ve been all year,” coach Matt Campbell said. The win marked the fourth time in 2024 that Iowa State got a winning score with less than two minutes remaining. For this one, the Cyclones rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half — with Miami quarterback Cam Ward watching after a record-setting first half — to get win No. 11. Carson Hansen rushed for a pair of touchdowns for Iowa State. People are also reading... Ward passed for three touchdowns in his final college game, while Damien Martinez rushed for a career-high 179 yards for Miami (10-3), which dropped its sixth straight bowl game and lost three of four games to end the season — those three losses by a combined 10 points. BYU 36, COLORADO 14: L.J. Martin rushed for 88 yards and two touchdowns, Jake Retzlaff passed for 151 yards, and the No. 17 Cougars (11-2) routed the No. 20 Buffaloes (9-4) in San Antonio. Colorado was held to 210 total yards with only two net yards rushing. The Buffaloes had 90 yards in the fourth quarter with the Cougars leading by 29 points. Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders was sacked three times and threw two interceptions. Sanders passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns while completing 16 of 23 passes. Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter had four receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown. NEBRASKA 20, BOSTON COLLEGE 15: Dylan Raiola passed for 228 yards and a touchdown as Nebraska built an 18-point lead through three quarters and hung on for its first bowl victory since 2015. Raiola hit Emmett Johnson with a 13-yard TD pass on fourth down with 3:02 remaining in the third quarter for a 20-2 edge and the Cornhuskers (7-6) held on for the win at Yankee Stadium. Raiola completed 23 of 31 passes in front of a sizable Nebraska crowd. Grayson James finished 25 of 40 for 296 yards for Boston College (7-6). EAST CAROLINA 26, NC STATE 21: Rahjai Harris broke free for an 86-yard touchdown run with 1:33 remaining, giving East Carolina a pulsating victory over NC State in the Military Bowl in a game that descended into a wild brawl in the final minute in Annapolis, Md. Harris had 220 of ECU’s 326 yards rushing, and his sensational sprint near the end of the game gave the Pirates (8-5) the lead back after they’d blown a 13-point advantage in the fourth. But after an interception by Dontavius Nash ended NC State’s final drive, East Carolina’s attempt to run out the clock was interrupted by a large-scale fight between the two in-state rivals — who play each other again to start next season. Three players for ECU and five for NC State (6-7) were ejected. MIAMI (OHIO) 43, COLORADO STATE 17: Kevin Davis had a career-high 148 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just nine carries, and Jordan Brunson also ran for two TDs to help Miami (Ohio) wrapped the season at 9-5 by beating Colorado State (8-5) in Tucson, Ariz. Davis scored on a 4-yard run with 12:35 left in the third quarter, Matt Salopek forced a fumble that was recovered by Silas Walters and quarterback Brett Gabbert’s first rushing touchdown of the season — a 10-yard scramble that capped a 47-yard drive — made it 22-3 about 2 minutes later. ARMY 27, LOUISIANA TECH 6: Bryson Daily broke the FBS record for touchdowns by a quarterback in a season with 32, running for three scores in No. 19 Army's victory over Louisiana Tech. Daily ran for 127 yards on 27 carries and was 2-of-9 passing for 65 yards to help the Black Knights set a program victory record at 12-2. Hayden Reed added 114 yards rushing and a TD on 20 carries. Army entered the game with a nation-best 298.9 yards rushing per game and punished the Bulldogs (5-8), a late replacement for Sun Belt champion Marshall. UCONN 27, NORTH CAROLINA 14: Joe Fagnano threw for 151 yards and two touchdowns to help the Huskies (9-4) beat the Tar Heels (6-7) at Fenway Park, embarrassing incoming coach Bill Belichick’s new team in his old backyard. Mel Brown rushed for 96 yards for UConn and Skyler Bell caught three passes for 77 yards, including a 38-yard touchdown that gave the Huskies a 10-0 first-quarter lead. TCU 34, LOUISIANA 3: Josh Hoover passed for four touchdowns as the Horned Frogs (9-4) routed the Ragin’ Cajuns (10-4) in Albuquerque. Hoover was 20 for 32 for 252 yards with an interception. Eric McAlister had eight catches for 87 yards and a TD for the Horned Frogs. Be the first to know

Position Mobile's Fate Remains Uncertain: Winding Up, Court-Ordered Buy-Out Both Options in Next Year's TrialBoston 107, Minnesota 10504l

Donald Trump can keep his campaign pledge to help average Americans, or he can keep Elon Musk. He can’t do both. Trump won in large part because he persuaded 77 million Americans that he understands and cares about gas, groceries and the corrosive impact of inflation. Musk’s interference with a bipartisan budget deal shows the billionaire does not. It was Musk who led the charge to jettison a plan to keep the government funded. No one will even notice if the federal government grinds to a halt for a few weeks, agreed Musk, the wealthiest person in the world. Spoken like a billionaire who has never stood in a grocery store line figuring how many meals he could make from one pound of hamburger; never stretched a budget for Christmas gifts; never sweated over a delayed Social Security check; never rented an apartment on the $28,530 U.S. Army privates earn. A budget deal would have been signed and a crisis averted but for Musk’s ranting on X, his $44 billion social media megaphone, against the budget that House Speaker Mike Johnson had worked out with Democrats on Dec. 17. Before dawn the next morning, Musk bombarded his millions of followers with the first of more than 150 tweets attacking the compromise. He threatened defeat at the polls for any member of Congress who voted for it. Trump later said, unconvincingly, that Musk had acted with his approval. The president-elect has the right to choose his own counselors, and if he believes the multiple billionaires he has tapped for Cabinet, agency and ambassador posts will best carry out his policies, that is his privilege. Musk holds no such post. The Department of Government Efficiency, the “agency” he has been tapped to head, does not actually exist. He was elected by no one, even though he has eclipsed JD Vance, who was elected by millions. That doesn’t directly impact average Americans’ pocketbooks, but the U.S. budget does. The spending bill Musk sabotaged ensured that military families would get paid over the holidays. It provided disaster relief to West Florida and financial aid to farmers. It barred internet services from ripping off rural customers and reined in hidden hotel fees. It provided money for poor children to quickly get out-of-state cancer treatment. Musk was not only proud when it all went up in flames. He was gleeful. And why not? The 1,500-page deal contained bipartisan provisions potentially restricting U.S. corporate investments in technology in China, where Musk already has one Tesla factory and intends to build another. “It is no surprise, then, that ‘President’ Musk does not want to see a funding deal containing this provision be signed into law,” wrote Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., ranking member of the House Appropriations Committee, in a letter to House leaders. Musk spent at least $260 million to elect Trump, who promptly rewarded him by naming him co-chair of this Department of Government Efficiency that Congress has yet to establish. At Mar-a-Lago, he has been interviewing other prospective appointees. And what does Musk bring to the table that would benefit Trump’s family-first pledges? Not economic acumen. Musk and fellow investors in Twitter have lost an estimated $25 billion as his toxic policies prompted advertisers and users to flock to smaller — but saner — platforms. Housing costs are backbreaking, but the man who once owned three mansions on the same street asserts that “homelessness” is primarily propaganda to describe violent drug users. And despite his avowed axe-wielding approach to budgeting, he doesn’t sneer at all bloated federal contracts. Musk’s SpaceX has vacuumed up more than $10 billion in government deals even as federal agencies are reviewing whether it played fast and loose with state secrets. There is infinite potential for more Musk damage. For example, he endorsed the far-right Alternative for Germany party in its forthcoming election. Widely regarded as neo-Nazi, a party member suggested gassing immigrants, according to Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., and another described Jews as an inner enemy. It doesn’t matter that a budget bill was eventually passed. It matters that Trump allowed Musk to borrow his spotlight, shatter campaign promises still fresh in voters’ minds and come away with nothing to show for it except the perception that Musk is running the show. Trump should not be seeking Musk’s advice on appointees. He should be asking whether he has created the political equivalent of Dr. Frankenstein’s fictional monster. The more Trump indulges Musk, the shakier his own reign will be. To contact us, email at letters@sun-sentinel.com .WASHINGTON (AP) — One year after the Jan. 6, 2021 , U.S. Capitol attack, Attorney General Merrick Garland said the Justice Department was committed to holding accountable all perpetrators “at any level” for “the assault on our democracy.” That bold declaration won't apply to at least one person: Donald Trump. Special counsel Jack Smith's move on Monday to abandon the federal election interference case against Trump means jurors will likely never decide whether the president-elect is criminally responsible for his attempts to cling to power after losing the 2020 campaign. The decision to walk away from the election charges and the separate classified documents case against Trump marks an abrupt end of the Justice Department’s unprecedented legal effort that once threatened his liberty but appears only to have galvanized his supporters. The abandonment of the cases accusing Trump of endangering American democracy and national security does away with the most serious legal threats he was facing as he returns to the White House. It was the culmination of a monthslong defense effort to delay the proceedings at every step and use the criminal allegations to Trump's political advantage, putting the final word in the hands of voters instead of jurors. “We always knew that the rich and powerful had an advantage, but I don’t think we would have ever believed that somebody could walk away from everything,” said Stephen Saltzburg, a George Washington University law professor and former Justice Department official. “If there ever was a Teflon defendant, that’s Donald Trump.” While prosecutors left the door open to the possibility that federal charges could be re-filed against Trump after he leaves office, that seems unlikely. Meanwhile, Trump's presidential victory has thrown into question the future of the two state criminal cases against him in New York and Georgia. Trump was supposed to be sentenced on Tuesday after his conviction on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money case , but it's possible the sentencing could be delayed until after Trump leaves office, and the defense is pushing to dismiss the case altogether. Smith's team stressed that their decision to abandon the federal cases was not a reflection of the merit of the charges, but an acknowledgement that they could not move forward under longstanding Justice Department policy that says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. Trump's presidential victory set “at odds two fundamental and compelling national interests: On the one hand, the Constitution’s requirement that the President must not be unduly encumbered in fulfilling his weighty responsibilities . . . and on the other hand, the Nation’s commitment to the rule of law,” prosecutors wrote in court papers. The move just weeks after Trump's victory over Vice President Kamala Harris underscores the immense personal stake Trump had in the campaign in which he turned his legal woes into a political rallying cry. Trump accused prosecutors of bringing the charges in a bid to keep him out of the White House, and he promised revenge on his perceived enemies if he won a second term. “If Donald J. Trump had lost an election, he may very well have spent the rest of his life in prison,” Vice President-elect JD Vance, wrote in a social media post on Monday. “These prosecutions were always political. Now it’s time to ensure what happened to President Trump never happens in this country again.” After the Jan. 6 attack by Trump supporters that left more than 100 police officers injured, Republican leader Mitch McConnell and several other Republicans who voted to acquit Trump during his Senate impeachment trial said it was up to the justice system to hold Trump accountable. The Jan. 6 case brought last year in Washington alleged an increasingly desperate criminal conspiracy to subvert the will of voters after Trump's 2020 loss, accusing Trump of using the angry mob of supporters that attacked the Capitol as “a tool” in his campaign to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence and obstruct the certification of Democrat Joe Biden's victory. Hundreds of Jan. 6 rioters — many of whom have said they felt called to Washington by Trump — have pleaded guilty or been convicted by juries of federal charges at the same courthouse where Trump was supposed to stand trial last year. As the trial date neared, officials at the courthouse that sits within view of the Capitol were busy making plans for the crush of reporters expected to cover the historic case. But Trump's argument that he enjoyed absolute immunity from prosecution quickly tied up the case in appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court. The high court ruled in July that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution , and sent the case back to the trial court to decide which allegations could move forward. But the case was dismissed before the trial court could got a chance to do so. The other indictment brought in Florida accused Trump of improperly storing at his Mar-a-Lago estate sensitive documents on nuclear capabilities, enlisting aides and lawyers to help him hide records demanded by investigators and cavalierly showing off a Pentagon “plan of attack” and classified map. But U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed the case in July it on grounds that Smith was illegally appointed . Smith appealed to the Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, but abandoned that appeal on Monday. Smith's team said it would continue its fight in the appeals court to revive charges against Trump's two co-defendants because “no principle of temporary immunity applies to them.” In New York, jurors spent weeks last spring hearing evidence in a state case alleging a Trump scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through a hush money payment to a porn actor who said the two had sex. New York prosecutors recently expressed openness to delaying sentencing until after Trump's second term, while Trump's lawyers are fighting to have the conviction dismissed altogether. In Georgia, a trial while Trump is in office seems unlikely in a state case charging him and more than a dozen others with conspiring to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state. The case has been on hold since an appeals court agreed to review whether to remove Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over her romantic relationship with the special prosecutor she had hired to lead the case. Associated Press reporter Lisa Mascaro in Washington contributed.

DIAMONDROCK HOSPITALITY DECLARES FOURTH QUARTER DIVIDENDS

Jonah Goldberg Among elites across the ideological spectrum, there's one point of unifying agreement: Americans are bitterly divided. What if that's wrong? What if elites are the ones who are bitterly divided while most Americans are fairly unified? History rarely lines up perfectly with the calendar (the "sixties" didn't really start until the decade was almost over). But politically, the 21st century neatly began in 2000, when the election ended in a tie and the color coding of electoral maps became enshrined as a kind of permanent tribal color war of "red vs. blue." Elite understanding of politics has been stuck in this framework ever since. Politicians and voters have leaned into this alleged political reality, making it seem all the more real in the process. I loathe the phrase "perception is reality," but in politics it has the reifying power of self-fulfilling prophecy. Like rival noble families in medieval Europe, elites have been vying for power and dominance on the arrogant assumption that their subjects share their concern for who rules rather than what the rulers can deliver. Political cartoonists from across country draw up something special for the holiday In 2018, the group More in Common published a massive report on the "hidden tribes" of American politics. The wealthiest and whitest groups were "devoted conservatives" (6%) and "progressive activists" (8%). These tribes dominate the media, the parties and higher education, and they dictate the competing narratives of red vs. blue, particularly on cable news and social media. Meanwhile, the overwhelming majority of Americans resided in, or were adjacent to, the "exhausted majority." These people, however, "have no narrative," as David Brooks wrote at the time. "They have no coherent philosophic worldview to organize their thinking and compel action." Lacking a narrative might seem like a very postmodern problem, but in a postmodern elite culture, postmodern problems are real problems. It's worth noting that red vs. blue America didn't emerge ex nihilo. The 1990s were a time when the economy and government seemed to be working, at home and abroad. As a result, elites leaned into the narcissism of small differences to gain political and cultural advantage. They remain obsessed with competing, often apocalyptic, narratives. That leaves out most Americans. The gladiatorial combatants of cable news, editorial pages and academia, and their superfan spectators, can afford these fights. Members of the exhausted majority are more interested in mere competence. I think that's the hidden unity elites are missing. This is why we keep throwing incumbent parties out of power: They get elected promising competence but get derailed -- or seduced -- by fan service to, or trolling of, the elites who dominate the national conversation. There's a difference between competence and expertise. One of the most profound political changes in recent years has been the separation of notions of credentialed expertise from real-world competence. This isn't a new theme in American life, but the pandemic and the lurch toward identity politics amplified distrust of experts in unprecedented ways. This is a particular problem for the left because it is far more invested in credentialism than the right. Indeed, some progressives are suddenly realizing they invested too much in the authority of experts and too little in the ability of experts to provide what people want from government, such as affordable housing, decent education and low crime. The New York Times' Ezra Klein says he's tired of defending the authority of government institutions. Rather, "I want them to work." One of the reasons progressives find Trump so offensive is his absolute inability to speak the language of expertise -- which is full of coded elite shibboleths. But Trump veritably shouts the language of competence. I don't mean he is actually competent at governing. But he is effectively blunt about calling leaders, experts and elites -- of both parties -- stupid, ineffective, weak and incompetent. He lost in 2020 because voters didn't believe he was actually good at governing. He won in 2024 because the exhausted majority concluded the Biden administration was bad at it. Nostalgia for the low-inflation pre-pandemic economy was enough to convince voters that Trumpian drama is the tolerable price to pay for a good economy. About 3 out of 4 Americans who experienced "severe hardship" because of inflation voted for Trump. The genius of Trump's most effective ad -- "Kamala is for they/them, President Trump is for you" -- was that it was simultaneously culture-war red meat and an argument that Harris was more concerned about boutique elite concerns than everyday ones. If Trump can actually deliver competent government, he could make the Republican Party the majority party for a generation. For myriad reasons, that's an if so big it's visible from space. But the opportunity is there -- and has been there all along. Goldberg is editor-in-chief of The Dispatch: thedispatch.com . Rico Carty, who won the 1970 NL batting title when he hit a major league-best .366 for the Atlanta Braves, has died. He was 85. Major League Baseball , the players’ association and the Braves paid tribute to Carty on social media on Sunday. A family friend told Listín Diario — a newspaper in Carty’s native Dominican Republic — that he died Saturday night in an Atlanta hospital. “Carty was one of the first groundbreaking Latino stars in the major leagues, and he established himself as a hero to millions in his native Dominican Republic, his hometown of San Pedro de Macoris, and the city of Atlanta, where he was a beloved fan favorite,” the players' association said in its statement . The Braves said Carty left an indelible mark on the organization. “While his on-field accomplishments will never be forgotten, his unforgettable smile and generous nature will be sorely missed,” the team said in its statement. Carty made his big league debut with the Braves in September 1963. He batted .330 with 22 homers and 88 RBIs in his first full season in 1964, finishing second to Dick Allen in voting for NL Rookie of the Year. The Braves moved from Milwaukee to Atlanta after the 1965 season, and Carty got the franchise's first hit in its new home on April 12, 1966, against Pittsburgh. Carty had his best year in 1970, batting .366 with 25 homers and a career-best 101 RBIs. He started the All-Star Game after he was elected as a write-in candidate, joining Willie Mays and Hank Aaron in the NL outfield. Carty batted .299 with 204 homers and 890 RBIs over 15 years in the majors, also playing for Cleveland, Toronto, Oakland, Texas and the Chicago Cubs. He retired after the 1979 season. The Seminoles (6-1) won their third consecutive game and went 2-0 in the event as they pulled away in the second half, leading by as many as 36 points. It's Florida State's best start since the 2019-20 season when it went 7-1. UMass (1-5) dropped its fifth in a row following a season-opening win over New Hampshire despite a strong game on Sunday from Jaylen Curry, who scored 17 points. Curry, with six free throws, helped propel the Minutemen on a 10-0 run over a four-plus minute span in the first half to take a 24-23 lead with 4:22 left. FSU closed the half on a 13-3 run to lead 37-27 at halftime. A 15-4 surge to open the second half helped the Seminoles break the game open. Florida State's defense frustrated UMass shooters throughout the contest, especially on the perimeter, limiting the Minutemen to 3-for-24 shooting (12.5 percent) from 3-point range and 18-for-58 (31 percent) overall. The Seminoles finished with 22 points off 17 UMass turnovers. On the flipside, Florida State had one of its best shooting games of the season. The Seminoles moved the ball well throughout the game and finished with 25 assists while only turning the ball over 10 times. The Seminoles shot 33 for 58 (57 percent) from the field and made 9 of 18 three-pointers to put together a season-high scoring output. Once again, Florida State shined thanks to its depth as 10 players scored and four scored in double figures. The Seminoles were able to have 16 players participate in the game as well. Jamir Watkins finished with 14 points while Jerry Deng and Justin Thomas each had 10 points. For UMass, Daniel Rivera finished with 12 points and six rebounds while Nate Guerengomba had 10 points. By Andrius Sytas TALLINN (Reuters) - NATO will need to contain Russia for the next 20 years, the head of Estonian foreign intelligence said. Estonia, which is bordered by Russia and is a member of the alliance, has doubled its defence spending since the war in Ukraine began to 3.4% of its gross domestic product this year, the second largest proportion in NATO, and increased taxes from next year to purchase stockpiles of ammunition for defence. “The task for NATO in the coming 10-20 years will be to contain or deter Russia so it doesn't get any stupid ideas to push towards the West militarily," Director General Kaupo Rosin told Reuters on Tuesday. “I think it's doable, but the issue needs to be taken seriously in the West, and that we invest (in defence)." While Russia has repeatedly denied it has any designs on attacking a NATO country, its defence minister said this week Moscow must be ready to fight the NATO military alliance in Europe in the next decade. Rosin said: “NATO and national military plans must be credible, must be real and must be backed up with real resources, regarding troops present, follow on units, ammunition. If we do our homework properly, then we will be able to deter Russia." While he said it was hard for him to envisage Russia negotiating over Ukraine any time soon, he said Russia would be “trying to limit NATO’s activities, NATO infrastructure and the troop presence in the vicinity of Russia”, including in NATO’s eastern flank states. President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that he was ready to compromise over Ukraine in possible talks with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on ending the war and had no conditions for starting talks with the Ukrainian authorities. CHINA TECHNOLOGY Touching also on China during the interview, the top Estonian spy said there could be a risk of blackmail from China if Estonia did not ban Chinese technology in crucial parts of the economy, such as in solar inverters, which connect solar panels to the grid and which could be switched off remotely. “If there would be a situation where China would like to push us towards a political decision, and some sectors are, in reality, not under our control. That would mean all this equipment would be manipulable from China," said Rosin. “This scenario is maybe not real today, but we have to avoid that this scenario becomes reality one day." His comments chime with those of NATO chief Mark Rutte, who said early this month the alliance would step up intelligence sharing and improve the protection of critical infrastructure in the face of "hostile" acts of sabotage against allies by Russia and China. Russia has dismissed multiple accusations of engaging in hybrid acts. China has repeatedly denied allegations of spying in Europe. China has also begun in recent years to call out alleged Western hacking operations. (Editing by Alison Williams)

Share Tweet Share Share Email Have you been following Hedera’s dramatic rise lately? Its value has surged by a jaw-dropping 460% in just a month, thanks to strategic partnerships and growing institutional interest. Then there’s Polygon, rolling out its ambitious Polygon 2.0 upgrade, which aims to revolutionise scalability and interoperability within the blockchain world. These projects are catching the eye of investors across the globe. But let’s not overlook the newest player on the block— Qubetics ($TICS) . This innovative project is tackling some of the toughest challenges in the blockchain space, offering real-world solutions where others have fallen short. With its presale already attracting significant attention, Qubetics is setting itself apart as one of the best coins for exponential returns in the crypto market today. Qubetics and the QubeQode IDE Qubetics is all about making blockchain technology more accessible and effective for businesses and individuals alike. At the heart of this mission is the QubeQode IDE —a user-friendly development environment that takes the complexity out of creating and deploying blockchain applications. Imagine a small business that wants to create a blockchain-based loyalty programme but doesn’t have the resources to hire a technical team. With QubeQode IDE, they can use drag-and-drop components to build applications effortlessly. Features like pre-built user authentication and token management systems make it simple to integrate blockchain functionality into real-world projects. For example, a retailer could quickly set up a rewards system that tokenises customer points, making the experience seamless and efficient for users. The presale for $TICS is currently in its 12th stage, with over 300 million tokens sold to more than 8,000 holders. So far, the presale has raised over $5.3 million, and the current price of $TICS is $0.031 per token. The stages last only seven days, ending each Sunday at midnight, with a consistent 10% price hike for the next stage. Let’s break this down with a practical example. If someone invests $560,000 at the current price, they’d receive roughly 18,064,516 tokens. By the time the presale price reaches $0.25 per token, this investment would be worth $4,516,129, delivering a 703.21% return on investment. And that’s just the presale—analysts predict even higher gains, with $TICS potentially reaching $15 post-mainnet launch, which translates to a staggering 48,092.91% ROI. If you’d like to learn more about this project, you can check out this video for additional details. Hedera’s Recent Surge and Strategic Positioning Hedera, the blockchain platform known for its decentralised governance and enterprise-focused solutions, has seen a meteoric rise recently. Its token, HBAR, experienced a 460% price surge in just one month. This growth can be attributed to rumours of new partnerships and increased adoption by institutional players. One significant factor driving Hedera’s success is its unique governance structure, which includes giants like Google and IBM. This makes it particularly attractive for enterprises seeking reliability and scalability in their blockchain solutions. Hedera is also heavily involved in tokenisation projects, enabling businesses to digitise real-world assets securely and transparently. Additionally, there’s excitement around a proposed Hedera-based exchange-traded fund (ETF). If approved, this could bring more mainstream attention to the platform, boosting both liquidity and adoption rates. With its focus on real-world utility and growing enterprise interest, Hedera continues to solidify its position as a key player in the blockchain ecosystem. Polygon’s Evolution with Polygon 2.0 Polygon, already a powerhouse in the blockchain world, is undergoing a massive transformation with its Polygon 2.0 upgrade. This initiative introduces POL as its new native token, replacing MATIC, and integrates advanced zero-knowledge technology to improve scalability and security. Polygon 2.0 isn’t just an upgrade—it’s a reimagining of the entire ecosystem. By introducing a network of Layer 2 chains, Polygon aims to provide faster transactions and greater interoperability within the Ethereum ecosystem. This is a huge step forward for developers looking to build robust decentralised applications. Another exciting development is the migration from MATIC to POL, which reflects the platform’s commitment to innovation. With the rollout of Polygon 2.0, the blockchain is positioning itself to handle the growing demands of the Web3 era, making it an excellent candidate for investors seeking exponential returns. Why These Coins Are the Best for Exponential Returns In today’s fast-paced crypto market, projects like Qubetics, Hedera, and Polygon offer unique opportunities for exponential returns. Qubetics shines with its revolutionary QubeQode IDE and the potential for massive ROI during and after its presale. Hedera’s recent surge and enterprise focus make it an attractive choice, while Polygon’s transformative upgrades ensure it remains a leading force in the blockchain space. For those looking to capitalise on the next wave of blockchain innovation, these three coins present compelling options. Just remember, thorough research and careful planning are key to navigating the volatile crypto market. REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) — Icelanders voted to elect a new parliament Saturday after disagreements over immigration, energy policy and the economy forced Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson to pull the plug on his coalition government and call an early election. This is Iceland’s sixth general election since the 2008 financial crisis devastated the economy of the North Atlantic island nation and ushered in a new era of political instability.Dell: Chief AI Officers Are Emerging as Lynchpin in AI Success

Australia is banning social media for people under 16. Could this work elsewhere — or even there?Trump says US should stay out of fighting in Syria as opposition forces gain groundLITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — Voters dejected by the presidential election results need to find a way to give back and remain involved, Bill and Hillary Rodham Clinton said Saturday as they celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Clinton presidential library. The former president urged audience members in a packed theater to remain engaged and find ways to communicate with those they disagree with despite a divisive political time. The two spoke about a month after former President Donald Trump's win over Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential election. “We’re just passing through, and we all need to just calm down and do something that builds people up instead of tears them down,” Bill Clinton said. Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state who was defeated by Trump in the 2016 election, said she understands the next couple of years are going to be challenging for voters who don't agree with the decisions being made. "In addition to staying involved and staying aware, it’s important to find something that makes you feel good about the day because if you’re in a constant state of agitation about our political situation, it is really going to shorten your life," she said. The Clintons spoke during a panel discussion with journalist Laura Ling, who the former president helped free in 2009 when she was detained in North Korea with another journalist. The event was held as part of a weekend of activities marking the 20th anniversary of the Clinton Presidential Library's opening in Little Rock. The library is preparing to undergo an update of its exhibits and an expansion that will include Hillary Clinton's personal archives. Hillary Clinton said part of the goal is to modernize the facility and expand it to make it a more open, inviting place for people for convene and make connections. When asked about advice he would give for people disappointed by the election results, Bill Clinton said people need to continue working toward bringing people together and improving others' lives. “If that's the way you keep score, then you ought to be trying to run up the score,” he said. “Not lamenting the fact that somebody else is winning a different game because they keep score a different way." “And in addition, figure out what we can do to win again,” Hillary Clinton added, eliciting cheers. The program featured a panel discussion with cast members of the hit NBC show “The West Wing” and former Clinton White House staffers. The weekend amounted to a reunion of former Clinton White House staffers, supporters and close friends, including former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and adviser James Carville. McAuliffe said he and Carville ate Friday at Doe's Eat Place, a downtown restaurant that was popular with Clinton aides and reporters during Clinton's 1992 White House run. He said he viewed the library and its planned expansion as important for the future. “This is not only about the past, but it's more importantly about the future," McAuliffe said. “We just went through a very tough election, and people are all saying we've got to get back to the Clinton model.”None

Well, things were bound to get increasingly messy on the way to resolution, weren’t they? After regrouping at Williams’s flat in the previous episode, everyone now has to flee from a massive gunfight with the Clarks, who are still after Kai-Ming and that ever-elusive pinhole camera. At the end of episode four , Sam and Helen realized that they were not delivering Cole to an anonymous life of fabulous wealth but to an uncertain fate at the hands of the Chinese government — which also wants answers about Ambassador Chen’s death, as well as that camera and footage — and have to make a literal run for it after they get stuck in horrible traffic. Even Dani has a crummy night-to-day at the office, spectacularly misjudging the mark in her attempt to seduce Wallace and ultimately getting her ass kicked by Helen. Whew! In the middle of it all is poor, reasonable civilian Michael, trying to process Sam showing up at his door with half of London’s most wanted and would just like everyone to keep their voices down so as not to wake 4-year-old Ruby in the wee hours. Michael is easily the MVP of this episode. He shouldn’t have to be, and it’s monstrous that the reason he’s involved at all is that Sam made a hash of his assignment back in 2017. Still, without Michael and his willingness to hear Sam out, everyone else would be dead. The Clarks’ attack on Williams’s flat is about what Cole led us to expect; they rely on overwhelming firepower and ruthlessness, even when they’re just planning a run-of-the-mill home invasion, double homicide, and kidnapping. I salute Williams and Eleanor for managing as well as they do on their own until Sam shows up and manages to extract Williams. At least they had Eleanor’s mini rocket launcher to supplement their arsenal, and Kai-Ming’s sense of self-preservation got her to lie down in the bathtub. Sam is leaning into some heroics and acts of loyalty in this episode by racing upstairs to Williams’s flat, which is in flames when they arrive, and whisking an injured Williams out and into the taxi he commandeered earlier. This is a very ultimatum-intensive episode. The new Chinese ambassador insists on restitution for Chen’s death in the form of military contracts or blood. CIA station chief Porter demands the return of Cole Atwood, incorrectly assuming that he was removed from the Embassy by Chinese agents. The prime minister calls ... an as-yet unidentified someone, demanding the recording device. The Clarks demand the recording device from Helen and Sam, lest they kill Eleanor and Kai-Ming “in ways so absurdly cruel that the manner of their passing will haunt you ’til your own dying day.” This guy really loves a florid turn of phrase. Reed instructs Sam to kill Alex Clark (and to deliver Cole to her). I just want to point out here that the governments of three major world powers with very sophisticated and well-funded intelligence apparatus at their command have thrown up their hands in the quest for this bit of technology and are relying on the unpaid services of a handful of exhausted solo practitioners, most of whom aren’t even spies. Seems like a managerial skill issue to me! Fortunately for Helen, Sam, and Cole, they’re able to cobble together something resembling a plan. Cole gets to work trying to inform Trent that they know where Kai-Ming is. Once Trent shows up, they can draw his mother out into the open, too. Helen and Sam work on retracing Maggie and Phillip’s steps since they actually saw the footage and will have hidden it and/or the device somewhere safe. Or, they would work on that, but Helen has been summoned home by her nanny, Marie. In all the excitement, she lost track of time, Wallace is still at No. 10, and Marie has stayed well past the end of her usual hours. Work-life balance is a real bear in Helen’s line of work, and she and Wallace aren’t exactly crushing it on the work-emergencies front. What comes next is one of my favorite beats in the story, mostly because it’s a little ambiguous. Wallace turned Dani down quite firmly, but she’s gotten in his head a bit, too. He half-quotes her to Helen, musing out loud that he must disappoint her and that nobody ever knows 100 percent of another person’s inner feelings. Something shifts in his perception of her again when Agent Perryman drops by for a quick confirmation of Helen’s presence at the U.S. Embassy that evening. Perryman doesn’t seem to entertain even a whisper of the notion that she was there for any reason other than to have coffee with Vanessa, but a blend of confusion, suspicion, and maybe a teeny bit of admiration for Helen sweeps across his face. It’s the look of a man who has a big important job, whose wife takes care of all of the details that make their lives run smoothly, so he hasn’t had occasion to pay attention to them ’til just now, and now he realizes just how much he hasn’t seen because he hasn’t been looking for it. Rather than address the specifics of what’s making him wonder about Helen and all she gets up to, he goes for a more oblique angle, with an unexpectedly affecting declaration of love. He’s loved her since the day they met; he’s desperately grateful that she wants anything to do with him, particularly as he’s just a pretty uncomplicated guy who loves her and the life they’ve built together. His top priority is protecting that, fighting for them and her, because, as previously noted, he loves her. I don’t think Helen quite understood how profound Wallace’s love is ’til just now — he sees her . Whoever Helen is, the person she’s created out of this and that over the years, she’s who he loves. We know that’s a bit tenuous given how betrayed Wallace would likely feel if he knew she was a spy causing the leaks that the CIA station chief mentioned in their meeting with the prime minister. On a purely personal level, Wallace’s sense of betrayal would probably bear a close resemblance to Michael’s response to Sam showing up out of the blue in the previous episode. Maybe, like Michael, he’ll be able to excavate happy, untainted-by-treason-and-murder memories that keep alive the notion that a renewal of their former relationship is possible. Maybe, also like Michael, he’ll find himself more afraid of his partner than of the people who’ve come to kill him. Helen tells Sam that it didn’t faze Jason, so maybe the revelation that Helen steals state secrets and commits the occasional murder won’t be as troubling to Wallace as Helen imagines. Jason, who Reed has the gall to say might not be worth avenging, does Helen one more good turn from beyond the grave. The bracelet he gave her? It’s from the shop where Maggie Jones worked, and it’s where the recording device has been quietly waiting in the office safe. If Dani hadn’t shown up looking dreadfully smug, Helen could have gotten on with her morning and done her bit to prevent a war. Instead, we first get a knife-fight scene that’s got a whiff of Kill Bill about it and concludes with Helen finding she’d rather be magnanimous. Rather than garroting Dani with a double strand of pearls or cutting her to ribbons, she tells her vanquished rival, “I’m not going to kill you because I’m still Helen Webb, and Helen Webb doesn’t stab girls to death in jewelry stores on Christmas Eve.” A brave stance, which I hope will pay off in both the short and long terms! Helen’s review of the long-sought footage reveals quite a twist. After all the shootings and explosions we’ve seen, it turns out that Ambassador Chen’s death was just an accident and that the perpetrator isn’t a professional assassin or a covert operative, but “trust-fund-baby moron” Trent Clark. Panicked, Trent calls his mother for help, police commissioner Yarrick shows up, and that’s it. Everyone’s been assuming this weeklong bloodbath was being masterminded by one of those sophisticated intelligence apparatuses we were talking about earlier, but it’s all been the ripple effect of a failson doing what he does best (or worst, depending on your interpretation of events). • Williams gets two runners-up to the best line of the episode. She’s being weirdly lighthearted about having a gunshot wound, on the grounds that “I don’t like to make a fuss!” Her encouragement to pray to the nonreligious Kai-Ming, “maybe now’s a good time to have a chat with your man upstairs,” also had me in stitches. • Of course Reed turns out to be a Christmas girly; I should’ve known she’d have a fondness for studding oranges with cloves to make a pomander ball! • Officer Perryman is played by Adam Best, who graced screens recently as Joe Lynskey in a few episodes of Say Nothing . Live Blog: Soo Greyhounds at Niagara IceDogsNationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and Maharashtra caretaker Dy CM Ajit Pawar on Saturday said during a meeting of Mahayuti leaders it was decided that the new chief minister will be from the BJP and the remaining two parties – Shiv Sena and NCP – will get Dy CM posts. The meeting of Mahayuti leaders was held in Delhi. Ajit Pawar said: "During the meeting (Delhi meeting of Mahayuti leader) it was decided that Mahayuti will form the government with CM from BJP and the remaining two parties will have Dy CMs... This is not the first time there has been a delay... If you remember, in 1999, one month was taken for government formation." BJP’s Maharashtra president Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday announced that the oath-taking ceremony of the Mahayuti government will be held on December 5. The swearing-in ceremony will be held at around 5 pm on December 5 at Azad Maidan in Mumbai. He added that the event will be conducted in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In a post on social media platform X, Bawankule wrote, "Oath-taking ceremony of the Maha-Yuti Government in Maharashtra. It will be held in the presence of the pride of the world, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 5 PM at Azad Maidan, Mumbai." The Maharashtra Assembly election results were declared on November 23, with BJP-led Mahayuti alliance storming back to power with a landslide majority. The ruling alliance, however, is yet to finalise its Chief Minister face. The BJP emerged as the largest party with 132 seats in the 280-member Maharashtra Assembly, while its allies--the Shiv Sena, led by Eknath Shinde, and the NCP, led by Ajit Pawar--won 57 and 41 seats, respectively.Rahul Gandhi does not have faith in Constitution: Gourav Vallabh slams Cong over remarks against ECIThe Rangers endured what was a chaotic Friday that included a booting of former captain Jacob Trouba to the Ducks and an historic extension for goalkeeper Igor Shesterkin . Somehow in the middle of both deals, they played a game that night, beating the Penguins 4-2 at Madison Square Garden, and turning a new page in welcoming former Duck Urho Vaakanainen to the mess in Trouba’s wake. Nevertheless, it doesn’t seem to make a difference to the 25-year-old on his third NHL team in seven years. “Shock at first, then excited,” Vaakanainen, who was acquired along with a conditional fourth-round pick in 2025, said on Saturday after Rangers practice in Tarrytown. “First thought is like awesome. Rangers is an Original Six team,” he continued. “Obviously, a big team and I’m super excited to be here. First thoughts were obviously a big shock. You don’t really expect to get traded but when I heard the Rangers, I was hype.” The new energy will certainly be welcomed by the Rangers, who have taken a complete downhill turn after building a cushion on a 5-0-1 run that quickly spiraled after a 1-6 stretch that the team brought into Friday’s game. Trouba’s trade was a first step toward a new start, and head coach Peter Laviolette believes Friday’s events helped quiet things down around his team that lacked motivation, a sense of fight and a leadership figure. “I think so. It’s always a tough day. Jacob is a terrific teammate and person. Did a really good job here with the New York Rangers,” the head coach said on Saturday. “It’s an emotional day for everyone in short. I thought we were able to get past that. I thought we had a pretty decent morning skate and it transferred to the game last night.” However, it’s unknown where the Rangers’ new piece will fit at the moment. Vaakanainen, who took a red eye flight to New York, could be found on the Rangers ice on Saturday afternoon already getting himself acclimated to the system. However, the Rangers are receiving the defender on injury reserve with an upper-body injury. He was wearing a green non-contact jersey with No. 18. Vaakanainen is unaware of the timeline of his return, but feels he is “getting closer” as he can currently shoot and pass the puck routinely. Laviolette was also vague on the timeline, saying it was “somewhere” between a day-to-day and week-to-week status. “We’ll get to that when we get there,” Laviolette said when asked if Vaakanainen will stay with the group or go off to one of the team’s affiliates. “Right now, he’s on the IR and out on the ice. That’s a good thing for us.” Vaakanainen, a Finland native who was drafted 18th overall in 2017 by Boston, believes he can bring “steady defense” to the Rangers while being “reliable” and one that will “play hard.” His seven NHL seasons have been plagued by injuries and he has tallied one goal and 24 assists across 141 games. This season, Vaakanainen had only played in five games for the Ducks, averaging nearly 14 minutes on the ice. He put up one assist and seven blocks. Despite the injury and coming into a Rangers team six points away from the first place Hurricanes in the Metropolitan Division standings, Vaakanainen isn’t coming into the group completely blind. He has a familiar face in fellow Finland native Kaapo Kakko, who he played World Juniors with in 2019. “It’s been a long time since I played with him, but pretty good player,” Kakko said on Saturday. “Good D-man ... pretty good player.” The lefty has the potential to slot in as an inexpensive Rangers depth piece with a $1.1 million cap hit to switch up a stalling defense. He will become a restricted agent this summer. Yet, rather more importantly, the Rangers got themselves away from what was a toxic situation with Trouba.

Global Hospice Care Market Set For 11.5% Growth, Reaching $7.31 Billion By 2028Bronson Reed has been receiving a significant push within WWE in recent weeks. His feuds with Seth Rollins and Braun Strowman both drew high ratings on television and across social media. He was rewarded by being placed into the New Bloodline's roster for its War Games match at Survivor Series. Unfortunately for Reed, he suffered an injury to his ankle and foot after hitting a Tsunami off the top of the cage at Survivor Series. According to Mike Johnson of Pro Wrestling Insiders, Reed is set to undergo surgery at some point next week. "The word making the rounds among WWE talents is that Bronson Reed will undergo surgery sometime next week for his ankle/foot injury suffered at WWE Survivor Series," Johnson reported. "Reed was injured hitting a Tsunami off the top of the cage through a table...Reed was slated to wrestle Seth Rollins in steel cage matches as part of the company's past-holiday live event week, so those lineups will change in the days to come." This injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Reed. He had finally generated some momentum within the company and had multiple big matches and angles lined up. His role alongside Solo Sikoa and the rest of the new bloodline would have helped increase his popularity with the fans, too. Now, Reed will be sidelined indefinitely. Once he returns, he must begin working his way back into a strong position. That could take months if it happens at all. Professional wrestling moves quickly. Fans will forget about his feuds while he's off television, and new storylines will take their place. There's no guarantee Rollins or Strowman will be available for new creative angles when he returns. And nobody knows where the Bloodline story will go next. Considering Reed's injury occurred during a dangerous spot within a match, which was undoubtedly part of the creative process, the hope is that WWE will do right by him once he returns. However, he may need to show some patience. Reed had earned this moment. Hopefully, when he's back and healthy, he will have opportunities to earn another big spot and can use that to springboard himself back toward the top of the "Monday Night RAW" card.

Bronson Reed's injury came at worst possible timeThe suspect in the high-profile killing of a health insurance CEO that has gripped the United States graduated from an Ivy League university, reportedly hails from a wealthy family, and wrote social media posts brimming with cerebral musings. Luigi Mangione, 26, was thrust into the spotlight Monday after police revealed he is their person of interest in the brutal murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, a father of two, last week in broad daylight in Manhattan in a case that laid bare deep frustration and anger with America's privatized medical system. News of his capture in Pennsylvania -- following a tip from a McDonald's worker --triggered an explosion of online activity, with Mangione quickly amassing new followers on social media as citizen sleuths and US media tried to understand who he is. While some lauded him as a hero and lamented his arrest, others analyzed his intellectual takes in search of ideological clues. A photo on one of his social media accounts includes an X-ray of an apparently injured spine. No explicit political affiliation has emerged. Meanwhile, memes and jokes proliferated, many riffing on his first name and comparing him to the "Mario Bros." character Luigi, sometimes depicted in AI-altered images wielding a gun or holding a Big Mac. "Godspeed. Please know that we all hear you," wrote one user on Facebook. "I want to donate to your defense fund," added another. According to Mangione's LinkedIn profile, he is employed as a data engineer at TrueCar, a California-based online auto marketplace. A company spokesperson told AFP Mangione "has not been an employee of our company since 2023." Although he had been living in Hawaii ahead of the killing, he originally hails from Towson, Maryland, near Baltimore. He comes from a prominent and wealthy Italian-American family, according to the Baltimore Banner. The family owns local businesses, including the Hayfields Country Club, its website says. A standout student, Mangione graduated at the top of his high school class in 2016. In an interview with his local paper at the time, he praised his teachers for fostering a passion for learning beyond grades and encouraging intellectual curiosity. A former student who knew Mangione at the Gilman School told AFP the suspect struck him as "a normal guy, nice kid." "There was nothing about him that was off, at least from my perception," this person said, asking that their name not be used. "Seemed to just be smiling, and kind of seemed like he was a smart kid. Ended up being valedictorian, which confirmed that," the former student said. Mangione went on to attend the prestigious University of Pennsylvania, where he completed both a bachelor's and master's degree in computer science by 2020, according to a university spokesperson. While at Penn, Mangione co-led a group of 60 undergraduates who collaborated on video game projects, as noted in a now-deleted university webpage, archived on the Wayback Machine. On Instagram, where his following has skyrocketed from hundreds to tens of thousands, Mangione shared snapshots of his travels in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Hawaii. He also posted shirtless photos flaunting a six-pack and appeared in celebratory posts with fellow members of the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. However, it is on X (formerly Twitter) that users have scoured Mangione's posts for potential motives. His header photo -- an X-ray of a spine with bolts -- remains cryptic, with no public explanation. Finding a coherent political ideology has also proved elusive, though he had written a review of Ted Kaczynski's manifesto on the online site goodreads, calling it "prescient." Kaczynski, known as the Unabomber, carried out a string of bombings in the United States from 1978 to 1995, a campaign he said was aimed at halting the advance of modern society and technology. Mangione called Kaczynski "rightfully imprisoned," while also saying "'violence never solved anything' is a statement uttered by cowards and predators." According to CNN, handwritten documents recovered when Mangione was arrested included the phrase "these parasites had it coming." Mangione has also linked approvingly to posts criticizing secularism as a harmful consequence of Christianity's decline. In April, he wrote, "Horror vacui (nature abhors a vacuum)." The following month, he posted an essay he wrote in high school titled "How Christianity Prospered by Appealing to the Lower Classes of Ancient Rome." In another post from April, he speculated that Japan's low birthrate stems from societal disconnection, adding that "fleshlights" and other vaginal-replica sex toys should be banned. ia/nro/dw

Kolkata, Nov 30 (IANS): Four illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators were arrested from Mazdia under Krishnaganj Police Station in Nadia district in West Bengal on Saturday. The four illegal immigrants arrested have been identified as Sumi Akhtar, Iman Biswas, Shankar Biswas and Rupkumar Biswas. Sources from the state police said that although the accused were residents of four different locations in Bangladesh, they illegally crossed the porous borders in the district and started residing at a local house at Majdia faking them as Indian citizens. Based on information from their sources, the cops of Krishnaganj Police Station raided the residence on Saturday morning and nabbed the four illegal Bangladeshi residents. Later in the day, all were presented to a district court in Nadia which remanded them to police custody. Sources said that the cops are currently interrogating them to find out their real purposes for illegally crossing over to India and staying at the local place. The cops are also trying to get an idea of their local associates who helped them to come to India and stay there. They have been booked under various sections of the Foreigner’s Act. In a similar case, the cops of Park Street station in Kolkata on Saturday arrested a Bangladeshi citizen Selim Matabbar aka Safiq Sardar who had been residing in Kolkata and working at a local hotel in the city with a fake Indian passport. The accused had close connections with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) when he was there. West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar said that under Mamata Banerjee's leadership, West Bengal has become a "haven" for illegal infiltrators, driven by her appeasement politics. "Neighbouring country's citizens infiltrate India effortlessly, securing IDs, while her government obstructs central efforts to establish Border Outposts (BOPs) and openly criticises the BSF. Does the Chief Minister intend to shield these infiltrators? After witnessing Bangladesh's plight, will she still refuse to act? She owes the nation an explanation," he added.

Unrivaled signs LSU star Flau'jae Johnson to NIL dealLeo Cullen remains wary ahead facing an old adversary, Pat Lam, in their opening European Champions Cup clash at Bristol. Because the Leinster coach has never stopped short of admitting his worst nightmare remains the 2015/16 PRO12 final when Connacht outsmarted the Blues in the Grand Final. Thus Leinster, with newly-capped Sam Prendergast selected at out-half, but without the injured Hugo Keenan, James Lowe will be hoping a slightly re-jigged backline can fit into place early on. "Bristol are flying, you can see it in some of their performances and in terms of the way they play," says Cullen of the team sitting joint-top of the English Premiership table. READ MORE: Leinster selection of Sam Prendergast at no10 is a sign that there is a changing of the guard READ MORE: Irish province under pressure as rumours swirl in France that two of their biggest stars are leaving this summer “We have some memories of Pat etched in our minds as well from times past here and where Connacht were successful in a Pro12 final which some of you may remember. "They played a certain brand and this has definitely had some evolution in terms of the way Pat plays the game. "It looks as if it is a very unstructured free-flowing game but it is very structured in terms of some of the roles players would have within that." Bristol, notes Cullen, operate with some tough imports such as Fiji's Bill Mata, Kalaveti Ravouvou and Argentina's Santiago Grondona but also have a decent follow-through from their reserves and Academy which helps backbone the club. “Since Pat has gone to Bristol he has been pretty open in terms of how he has talked about it himself, in terms of the opportunity, the resources that Bristol have, unbelievably deep pockets they have there. “They have probably changed the model since he went there first, he was probably signing at the top end of the market. Obviously Stephen Luatua (on the bench this evening) Luatua is still there. He was an All Black at the time. “Some of the other players that he brought in such as Ian Madigan, he would have been at the top end of his career at the time he signed. “He has probably moved a little bit away from that, partly because of the way the salary cap has evolved in England. “But has had good stability there in terms of some good young players whether they are Bristol guys or from outside as well." Loosehead Ellis Genge and scrum-half Harry Randall return to the Bristol line-up for this evening's game having played a part in all of England's November games. While former Leicester Tiger Harry Thacker is the only other change from the side that posted an impressive 48-28 win at Harlequins last weekend, crossing for six tries in the process. The Bears have 25 year-old James Dun (6'4", 111kgs) and 23 year-old Joe Owen (6'7", 109kgs) who made 40 and 20 appearances respectively in the second-row and they are expected to come under as pressure from Leinster's internationals James Ryan and Joe McCarthy who have RG Snyman backing them up on the bench. Former Connacht and Ireland scrum-half Kieran Marmion, now 32 years-of-age, is on the Bristol bench. He has made four starts and came on as a sub on a further four occasions. Add Cullen: “Bristol have been playing an unbelievably good, attractive brand of rugby and, as I said, they are incredibly dangerous from everywhere and anywhere so it will be an unbelievably good defensive challenge for us this week.” Bristol Bears: 15. Dell Technologies tumbled 10% in extended trading as the company issued a disappointing forecast for the current quarter. Economists polled by Dow Jones expect a year-over-year increase of 2.8% for the core reading , which excludes food and energy. Investors will look through the data for indications on how the Fed may proceed on its rate policy at its upcoming December meeting. Indeed, the Fed issued the meetings from its November meeting on Tuesday. While central bank officials said they anticipate more interest rate cuts coming down the pike, they said the pace of cuts would happen "gradually." "I think they'll cut again [in December]," Stephen Stanley, Santander U.S. Capital Markets chief U.S. economist, told CNBC's " Power Lunch ." Both Oklahoma and Providence are hoping they'll have key pieces back in place when the two undefeated teams square off in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis on Wednesday in Paradise Island, Bahamas. The Friars (5-0) are expected to have Bryce Hopkins available, according to a report from Field of 68. Hopkins was averaging 15.5 points and 8.6 rebounds last season before suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament Jan. 3. He returned to full-go practices last week, and Tuesday, Providence coach Kim English said Hopkins would be a "game-time decision" against the Sooners. "It's been a process," English said. "We're not rushing it." But English praised Hopkins' progress since the Friars' last game, Nov. 19, when Hopkins went through pregame warmups. "I thought he looked better than I remembered," English said. "He's been in our system for the past year. His patience, his understanding, his versatility on offense and defense ... it's been great to see him in practice." The Sooners (4-0) are hopeful that they'll get Brycen Goodine back. Goodine played for the Friars for two seasons from 2020-22 before transferring to Fairfield for two seasons and then to Oklahoma this offseason. Goodine suffered an ankle injury in the Sooners' opener Nov. 4 and has not played since. "He's a really tough kid and trying to push through it," Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said. "It will truly be one of those game-time decisions. He hasn't gone a full practice yet, just been pieces of practices." Playing with Goodine and Jadon Jones, expected to be two of the Sooners' top outside shooters, Moser said he's learned plenty about his team's offense. "When you're down those shooters, it's really a great weapon to know that a lot of other guys can knock down the open shot," Moser said. "It's been a huge takeaway." The Sooners have been led by Jalon Moore, who is averaging 18.8 points per game, and freshman Jeremiah Fears, who is averaging 15.5. Providence has been led by senior guard Bensley Joseph, who is averaging 11.8 points and 4.0 assists per game. Oklahoma has not played a game closer than 16 points yet this season, with an average margin of victory of 24 points. Providence has won its five games by an average of nearly 17 points per game. The teams will square off against either Davidson or No. 24 Arizona in the second round Thursday, with the winners playing each other in one semifinal while the losers play in a consolation semifinal. --Field Level MediaCowboys WR CeeDee Lamb to miss remainder of season with shoulder injury

09 jili RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — CNN wants a court to dismiss a defamation lawsuit filed by North Carolina Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson that attacks its report that he made explicit posts on a pornography website’s message board. The network says Robinson presented no evidence that the network believed its story was false or aired it recklessly. The September report says Robinson, who ran unsuccessfully for governor this month, left statements over a decade ago on the message board in which, in part, he referred to himself as a “black NAZI" and said he enjoyed transgender pornography. The report also says he preferred Adolf Hitler to then-President Barack Obama and slammed the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as “worse than a maggot.” Robinson, who was seeking to become the state's first Black governor, said he didn’t write those posts and sued in October, just before early in-person voting was to begin. While filing a dismissal motion Thursday in Raleigh federal court, attorneys for CNN said Robinson’s arguments suggesting he was the likely victim of a computer hacking operation that created fake messages would require a series of events that is not just “implausible, it is ridiculous.” Generally speaking, a public official claiming defamation must show a defendant knew a statement it made was false or did so with reckless disregard for the truth. “Robinson did not and cannot plausibly allege facts that show that CNN published the Article with actual malice,” attorney Mark Nebrig wrote in a memo backing the dismissal motion, adding that the lawsuit “does not include a single allegation demonstrating that CNN doubted the veracity of its reporting.” For Robinson, who already had a history of inflammatory comments about topics like abortion and LGBTQ+ rights , the CNN story nearly led to the collapse of his campaign. After the report's airing, most of his top campaign staff quit, advertising from the Republican Governors Association stopped and fellow Republicans distanced themselves from him, including President-elect Donald Trump. Robinson lost to Democratic Attorney General Josh Stein by nearly 15 points and will leave office at year-end. Robinson's lawsuit was initially filed in state court. It says, in part, that CNN chose to run its report based on data from the website NudeAfrica, which had been hacked several years ago and ran on vulnerable, outdated software. His suit claims the network did nothing to verify the posts. He's seeking monetary damages. Thursday's memo highlights the network's story, including a section where the CNN journalists showed how they connected Robinson to a username on the NudeAfrica site. As the CNN story said previously, the memo says the network matched details of the account on the message board to other online accounts held by Robinson by comparing usernames, an email address and his full name. The details discussed by the account holder matched Robinson’s length of marriage, where he lived at the time, and that both Robinson and the account holder had mothers who worked at a historically Black university, the memo says. CNN also said it found matches of figures of speech used by both the NudeAfrica account holder and in Robinson’s social media posts. “This is hardly a case where, as Robinson alleges, CNN ‘disregarded or deliberately avoided the truth’ rather than investigate,” Nebrig said, adding later that the network “had no reason to seriously doubt that Robinson was the author” of the posts. Robinson's attorneys didn't immediately respond to an email Friday seeking comment. The lawsuit says anyone could have used Robinson's breached data to create accounts on the internet. His state lawsuit also sued Louis Love Money, a former porn shop worker who alleged in a music video and a media interview that for several years starting in the 1990s, Robinson frequented a porn shop where Money was working and that Robinson purchased porn videos from him. Robinson said that was untrue. Money filed his own dismissal motion in the state lawsuit. But since then, CNN moved the lawsuit to federal court, saying that it's the proper venue for a North Carolina resident like Robinson and a Georgia-based company like CNN and that the claims against Money are unrelated.

The comments from Rafael Mariano Grossi came just hours after Iran said it conducted a successful space launch with its heaviest payload ever, the latest for its program that the West alleges improves Tehran’s ballistic missile program. The launch of the Simorgh rocket comes as Iran’s nuclear program now enriches uranium at 60%, a short, technical step from weapons-grade levels of 90%. While Iran maintains its program is peaceful, officials in the Islamic Republic increasingly threaten to potentially seek the bomb and an intercontinental ballistic missile that would allow Tehran to use the weapon against distant foes like the United States. The moves are likely to further raise tensions gripping the wider Middle East over Israel’s continued war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip and as an uneasy ceasefire holds in Lebanon. However, Iran may as well be preparing the ground for possible talks with the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump, who in his first term unilaterally withdrew America from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers. The U.S. intelligence community in a report released Thursday said that while “Iran is not building a nuclear weapon” it has “undertaken activities that better position it to produce one, if it so chooses.” The Iranian debate over seeking the bomb “risks emboldening nuclear weapons advocates within Iran’s decision-making apparatus and shifting the thinking of current and future Iranian elites about the utility of nuclear weapons,” the report added. Grossi, speaking to journalists in Bahrain, on the sidelines of the International Institute of Strategic Studies’ Manama Dialogue, said his inspectors planned to see just how many centrifuges Iran would be spinning after Tehran informed his agency of its plans. “I think it is very concerning,” Grossi said. “They were preparing and they have all of these facilities sort of in abeyance and now they are activating that. So we are going to see.” He added: “If they really make them turn — all of them — it’s going to be a huge jump.” An IAEA statement issued shortly after Grossi’s remarks said Iran had begun feeding two cascades of advanced IR-6 centrifuges with uranium previously enriched up to 20% at its underground Fordo facility. That site is located under a mountain, protecting it from airstrikes. Cascades are a group of centrifuges that spin uranium gas together to more quickly enrich the uranium. The IR-6 centrifuges enrich uranium faster than Iran’s baseline IR-1 centrifuges, which have been the workhorse of the country’s atomic program. Adding 20% uranium, as opposed to 5% uranium previously planned, further speeds up that process. “The facility’s updated design information showed that the effect of this change would be to significantly increase the rate of production,” the IAEA statement said. Iran separately will start feeding natural uranium into eight other IR-6 cascades at Fordo as well to produce 5%-enriched uranium, it added. The IAEA warned in late November that Iran was preparing to begin enriching uranium with thousands of advanced centrifuges. That came as a response to the Board of Governors at the IAEA condemning Iran for failing to cooperate fully with the agency. Iran did not acknowledge the preparations. The Iranian mission to the United Nations did not respond to a request for comment. Meanwhile, the launch Friday took place at Iran’s Imam Khomeini Spaceport in rural Semnan province, some 135 miles east of Tehran. That’s the site of Iran’s civilian space program, which has suffered a series of failed Simorgh launches in the past. The Simorgh carried what Iran described as an “orbital propulsion system,” as well as two research systems to a 250-mile orbit above the Earth. A system that could change the orbit of a spacecraft would allow Iran to geo-synchronize the orbits of its satellites, a capability Tehran has long sought. It also carried the Fakhr-1 satellite for Iran’s military, the first time Iran’s civilian program is known to have carried a military payload. Iran also put the payload of the Simorgh at 660 pounds, heavier than all its previous successful launches within the country. State television carried footage of a correspondent discussing the payload just as the Simorgh lifted off into the sky, as people called out: “God is the greatest!” The U.S. military referred questions about the launch to the country’s Space Command, which did not respond. Space experts said tracking data appeared to show the launch successfully put objects in orbit. The United States has previously said Iran’s satellite launches defy a U.N. Security Council resolution and called on Tehran to undertake no activity involving ballistic missiles capable of delivering nuclear weapons. U.N. sanctions related to Iran’s ballistic missile program expired in October 2023. “Iran’s work on space-launch vehicles — including its Simorgh — probably would shorten the timeline to produce an intercontinental ballistic missile, if it decided to develop one, because the systems use similar technologies,” a U.S. intelligence community report released in July said. Iran has always denied seeking nuclear weapons and says its space program, like its nuclear activities, is for purely civilian purposes. However, U.S. intelligence agencies and the IAEA say Iran had an organized military nuclear program up until 2003. Under Iran’s relatively moderate former President Hassan Rouhani, the Islamic Republic slowed its space program for fear of raising tensions with the West. The late hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi, a protégé of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who came to power in 2021, pushed the program forward. Raisi died in a helicopter crash in May. Iran’s reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian, who has been signaling he wants to negotiate with the West over sanctions, has yet to offer a strategy when it comes to Iran’s ambitions in space. The Simorgh launch represented the first for his administration from the country’s civil space program. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard conducted a successful launch of its parallel program in September.A federal jury in Delaware that Qualcomm didn’t breach its agreement with Arm through its of Nuvia, a startup founded by three former Apple engineers. As and , the decision stems from a two-year-long legal battle that accused Qualcomm of misusing the chip designs Arm licensed to Nuvia before its acquisition. Despite delivering a win for Qualcomm, the jury couldn’t determine whether Nuvia breached its agreement with Arm, meaning the case can be tried again. “I don’t think either side had a clear victory or would have had a clear victory if this case is tried again,” US District Court Judge Maryellen Noreika said, according to . for $1.4 billion to bolster the company’s lineup of next-generation chips, like the Snapdragon X chips inside current Copilot Plus laptops. Still, testimony during the trial revealed that Qualcomm's internal documents also showed the company projected on payments to Arm. In 2022, after Qualcomm continued to pay its existing royalty fees to Arm, which were allegedly much lower than what Nuvia was paying. After the two failed to come to an agreement, Arm argued the designs licensed to Nuvia were no longer valid, and that Qualcomm should destroy the technology created with them. During an interview , Arm CEO Rene Haas couldn’t share much about the trial, but said, “The principles as to why we filed the claim are unchanged.” The jury ultimately sided with Qualcomm after viewing Arm’s internal documents that estimate Arm could’ve lost $50 million in revenue as a result of Nuvia’s acquisition, . This week, Nuvia co-founder Gerard Williams also testified that the startup only used “one percent or less” of Arm technology in its finished technology, . “The jury has vindicated Qualcomm’s right to innovate and affirmed that all the Qualcomm products at issue in the case are protected by Qualcomm’s contract with ARM,” Ann Chaplin, Qualcomm’s general counsel and corporate secretary, said in an emailed statement to . “We will continue to develop performance-leading, world class products that benefit consumers worldwide, with our incredible Oryon ARM-compliant custom CPUs.” reached out to Arm with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back. /

Prioritizing future dividends over immediate income, companies drowning in cash like Visa and Microsoft. This is an excerpt from a recent Investing Experts conversation . Transcript Rena Sherbill: Eli from Dividendology, welcome to Seeking Alpha's Podcast. It's great to have you. Thanks for joining us. What stocks are you most focused on? What would you say your top stocks that you're focused on these days? Dividendology : Obviously, we want to start with looking for quality companies that can grow their free cash flow . And I would actually make the argument that the highest quality businesses in the entire world all pay out dividends. Think of companies like Microsoft ( MSFT ) or Visa ( V ), and now we can even throw companies like Meta ( META ) and like Google ( GOOG ) ( GOOGL ) into that conversation. These are companies that generate really high levels of return on invested capital. They have high free cash flow growth rates. And so typically when you hear those things, you think, well, wouldn't paying out dividends prohibit their ability to grow? Wouldn't they just be better off reinvesting that capital back into the business? But here's what you have to understand. These companies have massive cash positions on their balance sheet. They are drowning in cash. And in fact, they generate so much cash, they can't intelligently reinvest it all back into the business. And a good example of this again is going to be Meta . They just burned $50 billion with no return on that 50 billion by investing into the metaverse. They would have been much better off actually paying that out as a dividend. And I think the management team has realized that because obviously like we've seen over the past year, they're now paying out a dividend. So we're not sacrificing growth for these dividend payments that we're receiving, we're actually receiving them because these companies are such quality companies, they’re generating so much cash that I can receive growing dividend income year-over-year. So I would say, one of the main companies I've been really building up over the past year is Visa. It's going to have a low starting dividend yield. So it depends on what your goals are. If you're someone closer to retirement or someone closer to living off dividends, maybe that's not the best investment for you. You want to look for a starting higher yield. But if you have a long-term time horizon , you look at the earnings projected growth rates for a stock like Visa, and it's going to allow them to grow dividends at a very high rate over the next few years, over the next few decades. So I'm looking for companies like that. Visa is a huge position in my portfolio. Microsoft is a huge position in my portfolio. And then, of course, I also have the Dividend ETF, ( SCHD ). I'm a long-term dividend investor. I wouldn't necessarily have a high risk tolerance, but I know that I can handle volatility because I'm investing for the long term. What do we know about the market over the long term? Well, the average return is somewhat between 8% to 9% and inflation adjusted maybe closer to 7%. But here's what's interesting about this. When we think about when it comes to retire, when it comes time to live off dividends, again, my long-term goal is to one day live off dividend income. If somebody were to try to retire in a year when the market goes down 20%, that can be pretty financially devastating for their ability to retire at that point. So what does this mean? If I'm willing to live off dividends, well, I actually don't have to worry about that sequence risk. I don't have to worry about what the market is doing at that specific point in time.NEW YORK, Dec. 07, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Monteverde & Associates PC (the “M&A Class Action Firm”), has recovered millions of dollars for shareholders and is recognized as a Top 50 Firm by ISS Securities Class Action Services Report. This is far from the “Sex and the City” star’s first rodeo in the book arena, but it is her most ambitious. Parker launched her imprint, “SJP Lit,” last year through independent publisher Zando and was previously the editorial director of another, “SJP for Hogarth.” “Even when I went into publishing, I felt very nervous about people taking me seriously. I felt like an interloper, and that I was constantly in a position of having to prove myself,” Parker told The New York Times . “So to be a judge on the Booker, which is the greatest literary award bestowed — it felt very daunting.” Sarah Jessica Parker is ready to ‘listen a lot’ on Booker Prize judge panel Parker grew up in a household of readers, she told The Times – her mother used to drive with a book in her lap, sneaking in a few sentences at red lights. Check out: USA TODAY's weekly Best-selling Booklist Parker’s love of books continues that legacy: “When they are changing the lens” she captioned one of her Instagram photos that showed her reading on a film set. The props team on "And Just Like That" compiled 120 books for Carrie Bradshaw's bookshelves from a list curated by SJP herself . You can often find her posting about recent reads on social media. And this year, she’ll likely have to read as many as 170 titles, helped by a break in filming commitments. “Oh let me try!!!!” she commented on a 2022 Instagram post from the Foundation titled “What is it really like to be a Booker Prize Judge?” What is the Booker Prize? Founded in the U.K., the Booker Prize is a prestigious annual literary award given to what judges deem the single best work of fiction written in the English language. The Foundation will announce a “Booker Dozen” of 12 or 13 books in July, a six-title shortlist in September and the 2025 winner in November. Winning titles receive £50,000 (about $63,000). The winner of this year’s Booker Prize was “Orbital” by Samantha Harvey, a literary science fiction novel that tells the stories of six astronauts circling the Earth in 24 hours. Booker judges are typically academics or authors themselves, a fact that Parker is well aware of. “I’m just going to listen a lot. That’s the way I’ve probably created a career outside of acting: just being surrounded by people who are expert and listening, listening, listening,” Parker told The Times. Parker's admission to the Booker judging panel reflects a trendy new marriage between pop culture and literature – in the last decade, celebrity book imprints and book clubs have been on the rise. Kiley Reid, Roddy Doyle and others round out 2025 judges This is the first time the Booker has had three winning or nominated authors on its panel, according to the Foundation. Rounding out the judges are 1993 winner Roddy Doyle , writer, broadcaster and literary critic Chris Power and Booker Prize-longlisted authors Ayọ̀bámi Adébáyọ̀ and Kiley Reid . Irish writer Doyle has penned 13 novels, including his Booker Prize-winning novel “Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha” and "The Commitments," of which he also co-wrote the screenplay. He is the first previous winner to chair the panel. Adébáyọ̀ is the author of “Stay with Me” and “A Spell of Good Things,” longlisted for the 2023 Booker Prize. In addition to his novel “A Lonely Man” and short story collection “Mothers,” Power was a regular presenter of BBC Radio 4’s “Open Book” and has vast literary judging experience. Reid’s “Such a Fun Age” was longlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize. Her second novel “Come and Get It,” was named one of the best books of 2024 by the New Yorker, NPR, Elle and Vulture. Matt Gaetz , pushing the fate of any resolution to the yearslong investigation of sexual misconduct allegations into further uncertainty. The nearly party-line votes came after Democrats had been pressing for the findings to be published even though the Florida Republican left Congress and withdrew as President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general. Rep. Tom McClintock, R-Calif., was the sole Republican to support the effort. Most Republicans have argued that any congressional probe into Gaetz ended when he resigned from the House. Speaker Mike Johnson also requested that the committee not publish its report, saying it would be a terrible precedent to set. While ethics reports have previously been released after a member’s resignation, it is extremely rare. Shortly before the votes took place, Rep. Sean Casten, D-Ill., who introduced one of the bills to force the release, said that if Republicans reject the release, they will have “succeeded in sweeping credible allegations of sexual misconduct under the rug.” Gaetz has repeatedly denied the claims. Earlier Thursday, the Ethics panel met to discuss the Gaetz report but made no decision, saying in a short statement that the matter is still being discussed. It's unclear now whether the document will ever see the light of day as lawmakers only have a few weeks left before a new session of Congress begins. It's the culmination of weeks of pressure on the Ethics committee's five Republicans and five Democrats who mostly work in secret as they investigate allegations of misconduct against lawmakers. The status of the Gaetz investigation became an open question last month when he abruptly resigned from Congress after Trump's announcement that he wanted his ally in the Cabinet. It is standard practice for the committee to end investigations when members of Congress depart, but the circumstances surrounding Gaetz were unusual, given his potential role in the new administration. Rep. Michael Guest, R-Miss., the committee chairman, said Wednesday that there is no longer the same urgency to release the report given that Gaetz has left Congress and stepped aside as Trump's choice to head the Justice Department. “I’ve been steadfast about that. He’s no longer a member. He is no longer going to be confirmed by the Senate because he withdrew his nomination to be the attorney general,” Guest said. The Gaetz report has also caused tensions between lawmakers on the bipartisan committee. Pennsylvania Rep. Susan Wild, the top Democrat on the panel, publicly admonished Guest last month for mischaracterizing a previous meeting to the press. Gaetz has denied any wrongdoing and said last year that the Justice Department’s separate investigation against him into sex trafficking allegations involving underage girls ended without federal charges. His onetime political ally Joel Greenberg , a fellow Republican who served as the tax collector in Florida’s Seminole County, admitted as part of a plea deal with prosecutors in 2021 that he paid women and an underage girl to have sex with him and other men. The men were not identified in court documents when he pleaded guilty. Greenberg was sentenced in late 2022 to 11 years in prison.No. 23 Texas A&M aims to hand Oregon first loss at Players Era

Is the Islamic State a threat to Syria's political future?

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and a Hamas military leader, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The announcement came as health officials in the Gaza Strip said the death toll from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000. The warrant marked the first time that a sitting leader of a major Western ally has been accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity by a global court of justice. The ICC panel said there were reasonable grounds to believe that both Netanyahu and his ex-defense minister bear responsibility for the war crime of starvation and the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution and other inhumane acts. Israel’s war has caused heavy destruction across Gaza, decimated parts of the territory and driven almost the entire population of 2.3 million people from their homes, leaving most dependent on aid to survive. Israel launched its war in Gaza after Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250 . Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead. Here’s the Latest: WASHINGTON — The White House fundamentally rejects the International Criminal Court’s decision to issue arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials, press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday. She said the Biden administration was “deeply concerned by the prosecutor’s rush to seek arrest warrants and the troubling process errors that led to this decision.” The Biden administration has increased its warnings and appeals to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to do more to spare civilians in airstrikes and other attacks, and to allow more aid to reach Gaza. However, a 30-day Biden administration deadline came and went earlier this month for Israel to meet specific U.S. targets to improve its treatment of Palestinian civilians in Gaza trapped in the war. U.S. demands included that Israel lift a near-total ban on delivery of aid to hard-hit north Gaza for starving civilians there. KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip — The three children were playing outside a cluster of tents housing displaced people in the Gaza Strip when an Israeli airstrike killed them, along with six other people. It’s become a grim, near-daily ritual more than 13 months into the Israel-Hamas war, which local health authorities said Thursday has killed over 44,000 Palestinians. Israel carries out frequent strikes against what it says are militants hiding in civilian areas, and women and children are nearly always among the dead. Wednesday’s strike killed Hamza al-Qadi, 7, his brother Abdulaziz, 5, and their sister Laila, 4, in a tent camp in the southern city of Khan Younis. Areej al-Qadi, their mother, says they were playing outside when they were killed. “All that’s left of them are their notebooks, their books and a blood-stained jacket,” she said as she broke into tears. “They were children who did nothing.” The Israeli military did not respond to a request for comment on the strike. Gaza’s Health Ministry said Thursday that 44,056 Palestinians have been killed and 104,268 wounded since the start of the war, which was ignited by Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack into Israel. Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 people that day, mostly civilians, and abducted around 250 people. The Health Ministry does not say how many of those killed in Gaza were fighters but says women and children make up more than half the fatalities. Israel, which rarely comments on individual strikes, says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. Hours after the ministry announced the latest toll, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and a Hamas military leader. Mahmoud bin Hassan, the children’s father, said he buried them on Thursday. He asked when the international community would take action to stop the war. “When the entire Palestinian population has been killed?” he said. NEW YORK — Human Rights Watch applauded the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants issued Thursday against both Israeli and Hamas officials. The warrants “break through the perception that certain individuals are beyond the reach of the law,” the associate international justice director at Human Rights Watch, Balkees Jarrah, said in a statement. The New York-based rights group earlier this month released a report saying Israel has committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip, including massive forced displacements that amount to ethnic cleansing. JERUSALEM — Israeli prosecutors have charged a former aide to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with leaking classified documents to international media, apparently to protect the Israeli leader from criticism as a hostage deal was collapsing. Eli Feldstein, a former media adviser to Netanyahu, was charged Thursday with leaking classified information with the intent of harming state security and obstruction of justice. The leaked documents are said to have formed the basis of a widely discredited article in the London-based Jewish Chronicle — which was later withdrawn — suggesting Hamas planned to spirit hostages out of Gaza through Egypt, and an article in Germany’s Bild newspaper that said Hamas was drawing out the hostage talks as a form of psychological warfare on Israel. Critics say the leaks were aimed at giving Netanyahu political cover as the case-fire talks ground to a halt. Some have accused Netanyahu of resisting a deal in to preserve his governing coalition, which includes hard-line members who have threatened to bring down the government if he makes concessions to Hamas. The leaks came at a time of public uproar over the deaths of six hostages who were killed by their Hamas captors as Israeli soldiers were closing in. The indictment said the leaks were meant “to create media influence on the public discourse in Israel in regards to the handling of the hostage situation, after the news of the murder of six hostages.” The indictment identified two other Netanyahu aides as being connected to the scheme, but only Feldstein and an unidentified reservist in Israeli military intelligence were charged. Netanyahu, who denies the accusations, has not been identified as a suspect in the burgeoning investigation. Israeli media say if convicted, Feldstein could potentially face life in prison. JERUSALEM -- The Israeli military has launched an investigation into the death of a 70-year-old Israeli man who entered Lebanon with Israeli forces and was killed in a Hezbollah ambush. Investigators are trying to determine, among other things, who allowed Zeev Erlich into the combat zone with the forces and why he was permitted to enter. According to Israeli media reports, Erlich was not on active duty when he was shot, but was wearing a military uniform and had a weapon. The army said he was a reservist with the rank of major and identified him as a “fallen soldier” when it announced his death. Erlich was a well-known West Bank settler and researcher of Jewish history. Media reports said Erlich was permitted to enter Lebanon to explore a local archaeological site. The army said a 20-year-old soldier was killed in the same incident, while an officer was badly wounded. The army announced Thursday that the chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, has appointed a team of experts “to examine and strengthen operational discipline and military culture” following the incident. It said its commander for northern Israel, Maj. Gen. Ori Gordin, would launch a separate “command inquiry,” while Israeli military police conduct a separate probe. Such investigations can lead to criminal charges. BEIRUT — At least 29 people were killed Thursday in Israeli strikes on different towns and villages across Lebanon, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry and state-run media. In eastern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes killed 26 people in six different towns in Baalbek province, the health ministry and the National News Agency said. In Tyre province, southern Lebanon, three people were killed in an Israeli strike, the health ministry said. The health ministry Wednesday said that over 3,550 people have been killed in the 13-month war between Hezbollah and Israel, the majority following Israel’s escalation in late September. The European Union's foreign policy chief has underlined that the arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas officials are a legal and not political matter, and that they are binding on all 27 EU member countries and other signatories to the ICC to implement. “The tragedy in Gaza has to stop," Josep Borrell told reporters during a visit to Jordan. “It is not a political decision. It is the decision of an international court of justice, and the decision of the court has to be respected, and implemented.” “This decision is a binding decision on all state parties of the court, which include all members of the European Union," he added. ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling partyhas welcomed the decision by the International Criminal Court to issue arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamn Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, calling it a judgement made for the sake of “humanity.” Omer Celik, spokesman for the Erdogan’s party, said on the social media platform X that Netanyahu and Gallant would “eventually be held accountable for genocide.” Celik also criticised Israeli officials who described the ICC decision as antisemitic. Turkey is among the most vocal critics of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and has submitted a formal request to join a genocide case that South Africa has filed against Israel at the U.N.’s International Court of Justice. Dutch foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp, whose country hosts the International Criminal Court, has confirmed The Netherlands would arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he arrived on Dutch soil. “The line from the government is clear. We are obliged to cooperate with the ICC ... we abide 100% by the Rome Statute,” he said in response to a question in parliament Thursday. Other European officials were more cautious. In France, a spokesman for the Foreign Ministry said he supported the International Criminal Court's prosecutor but declined to comment when asked more specifically if France would arrest Netanyahu if he were to step on French soil. “Today, combating impunity is our priority. We ratified the ICC Statute in 2000 and have consistently supported the court’s actions. Our response will align with these principles,” Christophe Lemoine told reporters at a press conference. Lemoine added that the warrants were “a complex legal issue ... It’s a situation that requires a lot of legal precautions.” In Italy, the foreign and justice ministries didn’t immediately respond to emails seeking comment about whether Italy, an ICC member which hosted the Rome conference that gave birth to the court, would honor the arrest warrant. Premier Giorgia Meloni hosted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in March 2023 and has strongly supported Israel since Oct. 7, while providing humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza. JERUSALEM — Israel’s mostly ceremonial president, Isaac Herzog, has called the International Criminal Court's arrest warrants against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “a dark day for justice. A dark day for humanity.” In a post on X, he said the international court “has chosen the side of terror and evil over democracy and freedom, and turned the very system of justice into a human shield for Hamas’ crimes against humanity." Israel Katz, Israel’s new defense minister, said the decision was “a moral disgrace, entirely tainted by antisemitism, and drags the international judicial system to an unprecedented low.” He said it “serves Iran, the head of the snake, and its proxies.” Benny Gantz, a retired general and political rival to Netanyahu, also condemned the decision, saying it showed “moral blindness” and was a “shameful stain of historic proportion that will never be forgotten.” Hamas has welcomed the decision by the International Criminal Court to issue warrants against Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu and his former defense minister Yoav Gallant, calling it an “important and historic precedent” after what it said was decades of injustice at the hands of a “fascist occupation.” The statement did not refer to the warrants issued for the militant group’s own leaders. Hamas called on all nations to “cooperate with the court in bringing the Zionist war criminals, Netanyahu and Gallant, to justice, and to work immediately to stop the crimes of genocide against innocent civilians in the Gaza Strip.” DEIR AL-BALAH, The Gaza Strip — Bakeries have reopened in the central Gaza Strip after being closed for several days because of flour shortages. The shortages appear to have been linked to the looting of nearly 100 truckloads of aid by armed men in southern Gaza last weekend. Associated Press footage showed a crowd of hundreds pushing and shouting outside a bakery in the central city of Deir al-Balah on Thursday. The day before the reopening, the price of a bag of 15 loaves of pita bread had climbed above $13. “In my house, there is not a morsel of bread, and the children are hungry,” said Sultan Abu Sultan, who was displaced from northern Gaza during the war. The amount of aid entering Gaza plunged in October as Israel launched a major offensive in the isolated north, where experts say famine may be underway . Hunger is widespread across the territory, even in central Gaza where aid groups have more access. Humanitarian organizations say Israeli restrictions, ongoing fighting and the breakdown of law and order make it difficult to deliver assistance. Israel’s offensive, launched after Hamas’ October 2023 attack, has displaced around 90% of Gaza’s population of 2.3 million people. Hundreds of thousands are crammed into tent camps with little in the way of public services and are reliant on international food aid. NICOSIA — The president of Cyprus says the European Union must play a bigger role in the Middle East as it can no longer stand by as an observer. President Nikos Christodoulides said the 27-member bloc needs to establish closer ties with countries that bolster regional stability like Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf states. “The conflict in the Middle East is taking place on the EU’s doorstep, in an area of vital interest to the bloc’s interests, where any escalation or regional spillover will have significant consequences on its security and stability,” Christodoulides told an Economist conference in the Cypriot capital. Christodoulides said EU member Cyprus for years has tried to get this message across to Brussels. The island nation earlier this year was the staging ground for a maritime corridor delivering some 20,000 tons of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The EU is wracked by members’ divisions over how peace should come about in the Middle East THE HAGUE — The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants on Thursday for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister and Hamas officials, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity over the war in Gaza and the October 2023 attacks that triggered Israel’s offensive in the Palestinian territory. The decision turns Netanyahu and the others into internationally wanted suspects and is likely to further isolate them and complicate efforts to negotiate a cease-fire to end the 13-month conflict. But its practical implications could be limited since Israel and its major ally, the United States, are not members of the court and several of the Hamas officials have been subsequently killed in the conflict. Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders have previously condemned ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan’s request for the warrants as disgraceful and antisemitic. U.S. President Joe Biden also blasted the prosecutor and expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas. Hamas also slammed the request. The death toll in the Gaza Strip from the 13-month-old war between Israel and Hamas has surpassed 44,000, local health officials said Thursday. The Gaza Health Ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count, but it has said that more than half of the fatalities are women and children. The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence. The Health Ministry said 44,056 people have been killed and 104,268 wounded since the start of the war. It has said the real toll is higher because thousands of bodies are buried under rubble or in areas that medics cannot access. The war began when Hamas-led militants stormed into southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting another 250 . Around 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead. Most of the rest were released during a cease-fire last year. Around 90% of Gaza's population of 2.3 million people have been displaced, often multiple times, and hundreds of thousands are living in squalid tent camps with little food, water or basic services. Israel says it tries to avoid harming civilians and blames their deaths on Hamas because the militants operate in residential areas, where they have built tunnels, rocket launchers and other military infrastructure. JERUSALEM — A rocket fired from Lebanon killed a man and wounded two others in northern Israel on Thursday, according to the Magen David Adom rescue service. The service said paramedics found the body of the man in his 30s near a playground in the town of Nahariya, near the border with Lebanon, after a rocket attack on Thursday. Israel meanwhile struck targets in southern Lebanon and several buildings south of Beirut, the Lebanese capital, after warning people to evacuate.

‘Havoc’ by Christopher Bollen. Harper, 256 pages, $30 Christopher Bollen’s penchant for creating unique characters, then placing them in vividly explored exotic locations, again shines in the commanding “Havoc.” Chaos swirls around the brisk plot in “Havoc,” a story about a clash of generations, the perils of deciding how others should live and how evil can simmer below the surface. The unpredictable story keeps the reader off kilter as it does the characters who inhabit “Havoc.” The 81-year-old Maggie Burkhardt has forged a new life at the shabby-chic Royal Karnak Palace Hotel, located in Luxor, Egypt, on the banks of the Nile. She’s made friends with the manager, Ahmed, confides in husbands Ben and Zachary over their daily gathering at the pool, has found the staff sympathetic and interested in her as she grieves her husband Peter’s death six years ago. One would think a woman of 81 would be harmless, unassuming, physically weak. But this hotel is the 18th she’s lived at the past five years — having to flee each one, sometimes in the middle of the night, after she’s created a bit of havoc because she “intervened” in others’ lives. She calls it her “insatiable need to help others,” though it is unlikely the targets, or victims if you will, of her aid would agree. Maggie has been at this hotel for three months, hoping to stay at this “home” indefinitely. Related Articles Then Otto Seeber checks in with his sad looking mother, Tess. At 8 years old, Otto has a cherubic face, accented by his glasses and his mop of blonde hair, always with a smile on his face and a voice that makes him sound all innocent. He’s thirsty to know everything — about everyone. This little moppet seems harmless, just a child having fun. But Otto has a violent streak that often erupts. Even his mother admits to being afraid of him, mentioning that Otto’s behavior is why they had to leave Paris. Needless to say, Maggie and Otto are on a collision course as their mutual dislike for each other and harmful actions escalate, leaving chaos and death in their wake. The phrases “he’s just a child” or “just an old woman” are meaningless. Each knows exactly what they are doing. Bollen delivers a sophisticated plot pairing a kind of Miss Marple — if Agatha Christie’s character did more than just observe murders — and a classic bad seed of a depraved child. The character-driven plot ramps up with each chapter. Maggie and Otto are both vile and sympathetic at the same time. It is often deliciously unclear at times whom to believe, as the reader’s allegiance frequently shifts, making “Havoc” a richer story. Bollen finds the hidden corners of locales as his novels vividly have taken readers to Greece, Vienna and Long Island. In “Havoc,” he again returns to Egypt, taking the reader by the hand for a tour of the merciless Saharan landscape. Here, the sun is relentless, the sunsets so gorgeous they can bring one to tears, the ancient tombs stunning. The beauty of this harsh landscape mirrors the unrepentant souls of Maggie and Otto. Bollen gives the plot an extra layer of heft by setting “Havoc” during the middle of the COVID pandemic. “Havoc” is another showcase for Bollen. ‘Eight Very Bad Nights: A Collection of Hanukkah Noir’ edited by Tod Goldberg. Soho Crime, 304 pages, $27.95 This outstanding collection of 11 stories uses Hanukkah to shadow events that occur around the Jewish holiday. It seems that Hanukkah brings out the best and worst in people — like most holidays that invite family gatherings, personal reflection and uncomfortable realities. These are stories about loyalty, such as Ivy Pochoda’s “Johnny Christmas;” responsibilities, such as David L. Ulin’s “Shamash;” family issues, such as James D.F. Hannah’s “Twenty Centuries” and Stefanie Leder’s “Not a Dinner Party Person,” with its gleefully sociopathic pharmaceutical sales rep who really doesn’t want to see her family in their Florida trailer park. Breaking up with your girlfriend isn’t the best idea around the holidays as Liska Jacobs shows in “Dead Weight.” The Goldberg brothers, each an established author, contribute vastly different stories, with Lee Goldberg’s con man in “If I Was a Rich Man” and Tod Goldberg’s clueless businessman who just wants to make payroll in the titular “Eight Very Bad Nights.” A short bio of each author introduces his or her story, no doubt inspiring readers to check out their other works. While eight stories would be in keeping with Hanukkah’s legend, readers will be grateful for the extra stories as each is a winner. Savor these dark, yet energetic stories as you light the menorah.

The New York Post has published what it reports as new footage of the suspect in the shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson . In the surveillance video obtained from a cigar store on Sixth Avenue, the suspected gunman can be seen leaving a subway station at around 6:15 a.m., 30 minutes before the fatal shooting occurred in front of the Hilton Hotel in midtown Manhattan. The Post writes that it appears the suspect was leaving the 57th Street subway station, which is nearby the hotel’s location. The report did not include comment from the NYPD surrounding the footage. The NYPD previously released photos of the alleged suspect on Tuesday and Wednesday, with some taken at a nearby Starbucks before the shooting and others seemingly showing him unmasked and grinning. The suspect has yet to be identified, but several clues have since risen including the purchase of a gun seemingly linked to that used in the shooting and a phone dropped at the crime scene. A Catholic nun was among a group of 25 people arrested in Italy on Monday as part of a mafia bust for a laundry list of crimes that included extortion, drug trafficking, and money laundering. Anna Donelli, 57, of the Sisters of Charity Institute in Milan, volunteered at prisons around the city of Brescia—but a police investigation determined that her ostensibly spiritual services concealed a seedy criminal underside to her interactions with inmates, according to CNN. Prosecutors allege that she was “exploiting the very spiritual role she carried out” to run information back and forth between mob bosses and imprisoned foot soldiers for the infamous ’Ndrangheta crime syndicate. “She carried orders, directives, moral and material aid to associates, receiving in turn from the prisoners useful information to better plan criminal strategies,” prosecutor Francesco Prete said Thursday, according to CNN. Donelli’s cover story was that she was a liaison between prisoners and prison officials, in addition to refereeing soccer games at the prison. The anti-mafia operation that landed the nun and over two dozen other mobsters under arrest was carried out by over 300 officers and also resulted in the recovery of drugs, weapons, and the equivalent of nearly $2 million in cash. Billionaire owner of the Los Angeles Times , Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, has announced his plans to launch a “bias meter” for all articles on the outlet’s website as soon as next year. Speaking to CNN’s Scott Jennings on his radio show , the media mogul explained the meter would allow readers to view different perspectives on a news or opinion article in real time and allow them to write or read comments on the subject matter. “What we need to do is not have what we call ‘confirmation bias’ and then that story, automatically, the reader can press a button and get both sides of that exact same story based on that story and then give comments,” Soon-Shiong explained. “Now I’m giving you some little breaking news here but this is what we’re currently building behind the scenes. And I’m hoping that by January we launch this.” The billionaire proceeded to explain his hope for the module in building “respectful disagreement” and starting a “conversation.” Following his announcement, the L.A. Times ’ editorial guild released a statement in response writing, “the newspaper’s owner has publicly suggested his staff harbors bias, without offering evidence or examples” and that they value “an earnest search to understand all sides of an issue.” Soon-Shiong notably blocked the paper from publishing a Kamala Harris endorsement in October which was met with opposition from some staff. Timothée Chalamet thanked Bob Dylan for the shoutout after the legendary singer-songwriter praised his new biopic A Complete Unknown . “Floored. I am so grateful. Thank you Bob,” Chalamet posted on X . The film, set to be released on Dec. 25, stars Chalamet as a young Dylan. “Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me,” Dylan posted on X . Though Dylan didn’t share if he’s seen the film yet, he did recommend the book the biopic is based off of. “The film’s taken from Elijah Wald’s Dylan Goes Electric – a book that came out in 2015. It’s a fantastic retelling of events from the early ‘60s that led up to the fiasco at Newport,” he added. “After you’ve seen the movie read the book.” Dylan also gave a nod to the film’s title, A Complete Unknown , which references lyrics from Dylan’s 1965 song “Like a Rolling Stone.” “What a title!” he wrote. The slain UnitedHealthcare CEO had a criminal record for drunk driving and was secretly separated from his wife for years before he was shot dead in Manhattan on Wednesday, according to public records. Minnesota court filings show that in 2017 Brian Thompson was arrested and convicted on charges of fourth-degree driving while impaired, for which he received probation. In addition to legal troubles, the executive, who was gunned down in what NYPD has labeled a “premeditated, pre-planned, targeted attack,” also seems to have faced recent marital issues. Based on property records, voter registration forms, and reports from neighbors, Brian and Paulette Thompson had lived in different homes less than a mile apart in Maple Grove, Minnesota, for the past several years, The Wall Street Journal reported . In 2018, Thompson bought a five-bedroom second house for around $1 million, while his wife’s residence remained in another house nearby, also worth about $1 million, based on Zillow listings and public records. Paulette Thompson told MSNBC her husband had received threats related to his company’s “lack of coverage” and said in a statement to a local Fox affiliate in Minnesota that his killing had left her and their two sons “shattered.” About 12 hours after his killing, someone made a bomb threat at his Minnesota home, but authorities did not find any evidence of explosives, TMZ reported . UnitedHealthcare and the Hennepin County District Court did not immediately respond to a Daily Beast inquiry about Thompson’s DUI. A top health insurance provider has scrapped a controversial plan to limit anesthesia coverage for surgical patients in at least one state. Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield will no longer try to implement the much-ridiculed cap—which would have required patients to pay out-of-pocket for any anesthesia administered after their surgery went over an arbitrary time limit—on plans in Connecticut, the state’s comptroller, Sean Scanlon, shared Thursday. “After hearing from people across the state about this concerning policy, my office reached out to Anthem,” he said in a statement. “I’m pleased to share this policy will no longer be going into effect here in Connecticut.” The controversial plan was announced last month for customers in Connecticut, New York, and Missouri. The pending policy went viral on Wednesday, however, after the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, was gunned down in Manhattan in a “targeted attack.” It remains unclear if the cap will still go into place next year for New Yorkers or those in the Show Me State. Anthem is yet to say what drove it to pull its plan in Connecticut. Bill Lawrence, creator of Scrubs , is currently developing a reboot of the widely loved sitcom for ABC, Variety reported. Despite having a deal with Warner Bros. Television, the studio is reportedly carving out space for Lawrence to work on the show. Citing a source familiar with the matter, Variety adds that Lawrence will not be serving as the reboot’s showrunner if it gets fully greenlit. Cast members have also yet to be attached, and no other deals for the reboot are reportedly in place. Running for nine seasons between 2001 and 2008, Scrubs followed the daily hijinks of a hospital staff and starred Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, Ken Jenkins, John C. McGinley, and Neil Flynn. A reboot of the show has been thrown around for some time, with Lawrence sharing at a 2022 ATX Festival panel , “We’re gonna do it, you guys know. If you ever have an excuse to work with people you want to spend time with anyway, run to it.” Lawrence also famously created or co-created series like Cougar Town , Ted Lasso , and Shrinking . A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck Northern California on Thursday morning, briefly triggering a tsunami warning for nearly 5 million people . The earthquake hit at 10:44 a.m. PST west of Petrolia, California in the Pacific Ocean, the US Geological Survey said. A 5.8-magnitude aftershock was recorded minutes later near Cobb, California, and several other apparent aftershocks between 2.5 to 4.2 magnitude followed. A tsunami warning issued for parts of the Northern California and Oregon coastlines, however, was called off by the early afternoon. California officials are responding to earthquake activity Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a post on X . The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is said to be coordinating with local officials in Humboldt and Lake counties, where significant earthquake activity was reported. More than 10,000 Humboldt County customers are reportedly without power. While no damage has been reported in San Francisco, the city’s Bay Area Rapid Transit, announced it is experiencing significant service disruptions due to the earthquake. Influencers, the contract stipulated, would post pro-Grenell content and do so during “peak posting times,” ensure that “content must appear genuine,” and not “as an overt advertisement or promotional message.” Grenell denied the alleged influencer conspiracy to Politico. However, his desire for the highly coveted Cabinet position was no secret. Trump’s former ambassador to Germany and acting director of national intelligence spent the past three years reportedly telling people in the president-elect’s orbit that it was secretary of state “or bust.” Despite being one of Trump’s most loyal cohorts, Trump ultimately chose Florida Sen. Marco Rubio to lead the State Department . Grenell is said to have been offered other posts, including director of national intelligence, but has turned the offers down. Actress Amber Heard has announced that she is expecting her second baby. “It is still quite early in the pregnancy, so you will appreciate that we do not want to go into much detail at this stage,” a spokesman for Heard said Thursday to People . “Suffice to say that Amber is delighted both for herself and Oonagh Paige.” Heard welcomed her daughter in 2021. “I wanted to do it on my own terms,” Heard wrote in a post announcing Oonagh’s birth via a surrogate. “I hope we arrive at a point in which it’s normalized to not want a ring in order to have a crib.” Heard has never commented on who the biological father is. The actress relocated to Madrid, Spain after the highly publicized defamation battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp . Heard told NBC News after the trial in 2022 that she was hoping to focus more on her growing family. “I get to be a mom, like, full time, you know? Where I’m not having to juggle calls with lawyers,” she said.

Big improvers, plenty of rain and even a diamond duck in the opening eight rounds of Newcastle District Cricket Association's first-grade competition. Login or signup to continue reading Now at the traditional Christmas break, but only one weekend this time around, with plenty still to play for in the second half of the 2024-2025 season. Play resumes on January 4 with the first of five remaining two-day fixtures, but here's a snapshot of how the 12 clubs have fared so far this summer. CARDIFF-BOOLAROO Position: First Points: 44 Record: Won 7, Lost 1, Bonus Point 1. Statistics: Austen Hiskens (221 runs), Baylee Borrow (14 wickets), Bailey Creer (7 wickets, 2 stumpings). Summary: Jay Sneddon recently said: "If you had told me at the start of the year that come around Christmas time we would be on top of the ladder, I would've taken it with two hands and ran". The CBs captain might have to run a few laps at Pasterfield. It's been a long time between finals drinks for the club, a premiership season of 2009-2010 to be exact, and they can almost taste it. Steady improvers the last two campaigns, they have overcome the loss of all-rounder Griffin Lea and lead the way at halfway. WALLSEND Position: Second Points: 40 Record: Won 6, Lost 2, Bonus Point 2. Statistics: Aaron Wivell (323 runs), Jacob Montgomery (17 wickets), Ryan Brooks (8 catches). Summary: Wallsend kick-started their centenary celebrations in style with victory in the one-day final to claim the club's first Tom Locker Cup since 1997-1998 . The two-day phase has produced a close win, a close loss and another Nathan Price ton. Essentially, the Tigers have put themselves in a plum position to try and emulate the premiership success of 2022-2023. There's five more outings to lock up a spot in the semis with Aaron Wivell in a purple patch of form and skipper Jacob Montgomery back taking poles. WARATAH-MAYFIELD Position: Third Points: 38 Record: Won 5 (Outright 1), Lost 3, Bonus Point 1. Statistics: Adrian Isherwood (307 runs), Adrian Isherwood (24 wickets), Hunter Palmer (11 catches, 2 stumpings). Summary: Waratah-Mayfield we're always going to improve, but the main question was how much. The arrival of NSW Country all-rounder Adrian Isherwood and former Gordon quick Quincy Titterton bolstered the squad while Joseph Everett returned from the UK. They have barely put a foot wrong so far and posted three wins in a row prior to Christmas, including their first outright "in quite a long time". The ball now sits firmly in the club's court, hoping to turn a strong start into a top-four finish. STOCKTON Position: Fourth Points: 36 Record: Won 5, Lost 2, Draw 1, Bonus Point 2. Statistics: Cameron Tanner (364 runs), Nathan Hudson (9 wickets), Jake Hainsworth (3 catches, 2 stumpings). Summary: An undefeated 50-over phase of the draw saw Stockton cruise into the Tom Locker Cup final, only to be upstaged by Wallsend. They have now won just one of three two-day fixtures amid representative commitments for around half of the starting XI. Belmont and Toronto arrive first-up after the break before a semi-style run home against City, Waratah and Charlestown. Recalled opener Cameron Tanner carrying his bat with 164 not out in round three was a highlight for the Seagulls. CITY Position: Fifth Points: 35 Record: Won 5, Lost 2, Draw 1, Bonus Point 1. Statistics: Oli Carter (290 runs), Callan Fowler (12 wickets), Oli Carter (8 catches, 4 stumpings). Summary: Last season's grand finalists strung together five straight wins, bookended by losses to start and finish their seven appearances. It means the Sabres have again put themselves in the conversation and would no doubt be keen to go one better in 2024-2025, but they now have to earn their place in the semis with clashes against four other sides in and around them on a fairly congested ladder. City captain Oli Carter has showed his English county class both with bat in hand and behind the stumps. CHARLESTOWN Position: Sixth Points: 34 Record: Won 5, Lost 2, Draw 1. Statistics: Jed Dickson (193 runs), Daniel Chillingworth (14 wickets), Daniel Arms (8 catches). Summary: Charlestown could barely have written a better script to end last season - a T20 title and minor-major premiership double all sealed in the space of a few weeks. Magpies skipper Daniel Arms said "it's what dreams are made of" . This time around hasn't gone quite as smooth, needing to grind their way through a few encounters. But most importantly, they have put themselves in a position to pounce. Belmont, Toronto and Wests await in a row, bookended by Hamilton-Wickham and Stockton. HAMILTON-WICKHAM Position: Seventh Points: 30 Record: Won 4, Lost 3, Draw 1, Bonus Point 1. Statistics: Ben Balcomb (238 runs), Rory Walter (14 wickets), Ben Balcomb (8 catches, 2 stumpings). Summary: Hamwicks have been riding the cricket rollercoaster this season, trading wins and losses each and every round. However, none may prove as pivotal as the most recent up cycle, with the visitors staving off Stockton by nine runs at Lynn Oval on December 21. Rory Walter has turned out to be quite the English import with 14 scalps so far while captain Ben Balcomb, recently called up for a pending NSW Country debut , has led the way both holding the willow and wearing the gloves. MEREWETHER Position: Eighth Points: 24 Record: Won 3, Lost 5, Bonus Point 1. Statistics: Harry Price (188 runs), Zac Stanbridge (12 wickets), Patrick Huolohan (12 catches, 2 stumpings). Summary: The Lions started off the summer by winning back-to-back nailbiters, but the record reads 1-5 ever since. Three straight losses to CBs, Stockton and Charlestown have seen them slide down the ladder, now sitting 12 points outside the top four. So it's not out of the question, but the boys from Townson Oval need to get a wriggle on if they want to be playing semi-final cricket come March. A maiden century from Merewether schoolkid Harry Price provided a highlight in round four. WESTS Position: Ninth Points: 20 Record: Won 2 (Outright 1), Lost 5, Draw 1, Bonus Point -3. Statistics: Thomas Thorpe (288 runs), Flynn Guest (18 wickets), Elijah Smith (5 catches). Summary: It's been a definite changing of the guard at Harker Oval. The stars of recent premierships past all-but disappeared, a new captain and a young brigade. Effort and enthusiasm have been on show, going close a couple of times, but just lacking that extra experience. The Rosellas were rewarded with back-to-back wins leading into Chrismas, featuring an outright. Talented teenager Thomas Thorpe relished his Newcastle representative debut , returning to club duty with 183 runs from three digs. UNIVERSITY Position: Tenth Points: 12 Record: Won 1, Lost 6, Draw 1, Bonus Point -2. Statistics: James Rushford (221 runs), Tom O'Neill (17 wickets), James Rushford (9 catches, 1 stumping). Summary: The Sea Dragons have lost by almost 200 runs, but also went within one wicket of an upset over Wallsend. A large gap between their best and worst, maybe it's how to sum up any kind of form line. Plenty of personnel changes from week to week. Were always down a seamer this campaign with Josh Bennett out of action. Uni captain Tom O'Neill, spearheading the pace attack, has just been selected in the Australian over-40 squad to play a World Cup in Brisbane next year (March 31-April 12). TORONTO Position: Eleventh Points: 11 Record: Won 1, Lost 6 (Outright 1), Draw 1, Bonus Point -2. Statistics: Corey Brown (261 runs), Jarryd Moore, Brendon Charlton (9 wickets), Jason Varoxis (10 catches) Summary: Toronto broke a 652-day winless drought in round two after going down on the last ball of the season opener. Things were looking up. However, the Kookaburras lost their next five matches, most recently an outright, while a pair of touted Afghani imports never arrived. Two-time NDCA player of the final Brendon Charlton was an unexpected, but welcome, late addition to the squad. Corey Brown has led the way with the bat, passing fifty on three occasions. A first-up T20 triumph boosted morale recently. BELMONT Position: Twelfth Points: 5 Record: Won 0, Lost 7 (Outright 1), Draw 1, Bonus Point -3. Statistics: Jett Saxby (169 runs), Jacob Curry (11 wickets), Thor Harradine (8 catches). Summary: It's been a tough summer so far for the boys from Cahill Oval, suffering seven defeats from as many appearances. Only twice have the Whips scored over 150 runs in an innings and they were skittled for a season-low 39 in round six. Depth appears one of the main issues faced by veteran Tony Bristow, who answered an SOS call to captain the first XI aged 59 . Stockton, Charlestown and Wallsend all await on the run home, but University and Toronto may even be circled as potential winnable games. The results came after an exit poll, released immediately after the polling stations closed, showed that Milanovic, backed by the opposition left-wing Social Democrats, had scooped more than 50 percent of the first round vote and would thus avoid the January 12 run-off. Milanovic won 49.11 percent of the first round vote and Primorac, backed by the ruling conservative HDZ party, took 19.37 percent, according to results released by the state electoral commission from nearly all of the polling stations. Such a strong lead for Milanovic, whom surveys labelled a favourite ahead of the vote, raises serious concerns for Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's HDZ. The election comes as the European Union and NATO member country of 3.8 million people struggles with biting inflation, widespread corruption and a labour shortage. Among the eight contenders, centre-right MP Marija Selak Raspudic and green-left MP Ivana Kekin followed the two main rivals, the exit poll showed. They each won around nine percent of the vote. Croatia's president commands the country's armed forces and has a say in foreign policy. But despite limited powers, many believe the office is key for the political balance of power in a country mainly governed by the HDZ since independence in 1991. "All the eggs should not be in one basket," Nenad Horvat, a salesman in his 40s, told AFP. He sees Milanovic, a former leftist prime minister, as the "last barrier to all levers of power falling into the hands of HDZ", echoing the view of many that was reflected in Sunday's vote results. The 58-year-old Milanovic has been one of Croatia's leading and most colourful political figures for nearly two decades. Sharp and eloquent, he won the presidency for the Social Democrats (SDP) in 2020 with pledges to advocate tolerance and liberalism. But he used the office to attack political opponents and EU officials, often with offensive and populist rhetoric. Milanovic, who condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine, has nonetheless criticised the West's military aid to Kyiv. That prompted the prime minister to label him a pro-Russian who is "destroying Croatia's credibility in NATO and the EU". Milanovic countered that he wanted to protect Croatia from being "dragged into war". "As long as I'm president no Croatian soldier will wage somebody else's wars," he said this month. Milanovic regularly pans Plenkovic and his HDZ party over systemic corruption, calling the premier a "serious threat to Croatia's democracy". "I'm a guarantee of the control of the octopus of corruption... headed by Andrej Plenkovic," he said during the campaign. For many, the election is a continuation of the longstanding feud between two powerful politicians. "This is still about the conflict between the prime minister and president," political analyst Zarko Puhovski told AFP. "All the rest are just incidental topics." Primorac, a 59-year-old physician and scientist returning to politics after 15 years, campaigned as a "unifier" promoting family values and patriotism. "Croatia needs unity, global positioning and a peaceful life," he told reporters after casting his ballot in Zagreb, adding that he would later attend a mass. Primorac repeatedly accused Milanovic of "disgracing Croatia", a claim that resonated with his supporters. ljv/bcFirst Period_None. Penalties_None. Cover Five: After key bowl win, is Nebraska’s next step 9 wins in 2025?Saquon Barkley rushed for 167 yards to top 2,000 on the season , backup quarterback Kenny Pickett ran and threw for scores before departing with injured ribs, and the Philadelphia Eagles clinched the NFC East title by routing the Dallas Cowboys 41-7 on Sunday. Barkley has 2,005 yards and needs 101 in next week’s mostly meaningless regular-season finale to top Eric Dickerson and his 2,105 yards for the Los Angeles Rams in 1984. The Eagles (13-3) led 24-7 in the third quarter when Pickett was drilled by defensive end Micah Parsons, ending his first start in place of the concussed Jalen Hurts. Tanner McKee, a career third-stringer, entered the game and the Eagles finished the drive with a field goal. McKee later threw two TD passes, a 20-yarder to A.J. Brown and a 25-yarder to DeVonta Smith, in front of a roaring crowd delighted to watch the Eagles dominate their fiercest rival to wrap up the division title and at least the No. 2 seed in the NFC. Hurts was injured in last week’s loss at Washington and remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol — he didn’t practice all week — which opened the door for Pickett to start. Pickett, acquired from Pittsburgh in the offseason, played with extra protection under his jersey after he suffered a rib injury when he was pressed into service against the Commanders. Sore ribs or not, Pickett was pumped for this start all week. He was raised a diehard Eagles fan in central New Jersey about 80 miles from Lincoln Financial Field and recalled “great memories” of going to games with his dad and grandfather since he was 5 years old. The 26-year-old Pickett said he had plenty of family at the Linc to cheer him on against Dallas (7-9). More than 60,000 other Eagles rooted him on, too, but Pickett’s dream day ended prematurely. He finished 10 of 15 for 143 yards. The Philadelphia Eagles celebrate strides in gun violence prevention during community partner summit Philly city leaders report a 40% drop in homicides with a gun. Advocates say, “It is not by accident.” 3 months ago With the Eagles no longer having a division title to play for, it’s likely Hurts will rest another week ahead of the playoffs. Now, Pickett could be sidelined as well — possibly forcing McKee into the starting lineup. Barkley had 31 carries and his last one went for 23 yards to push him over 2,000. He could also sit out rather than risk injury chasing Dickerson’s record. Barkley, who left the Giants and signed a three-year deal with the Eagles for $26 million guaranteed, set the NFL mark for most yards rushing in a player’s first season with a new team. The friends and family that traveled to see Pickett play had to wait a bit after Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson returned an interception 69 yards for a score on Dallas’ opening drive. Cooper Rush — who threw for 147 yards and had two interceptions — followed on the next drive for Dallas with a 4-yard TD pass to Jalen Tolbert. Pickett connected with Grant Calcaretta for 34 yards and then hit Smith — who had six catches total for 120 yards — for a 22-yard score and a 14-7 lead. The Eagles’ defense broke the game open for Pickett when a recovered fumble led to Jake Elliott’s 31-yard field goal and Gardner-Johnson’s second pick of the day set up Pickett’s rushing score on a tush push. Just like Hurts. Pickett, who completed 10 of 15 passes for 143 yards, took two tough shots on the same drive on the third: Odighizuwa was flagged for roughing the passer on a late hit and Parsons delivered the knockout blow. The Eagles were thrilled to have a capable backup QB who went 14-10 as a starter with the Steelers. His performance prompted Pittsburgh legend and Fox broadcaster Terry Bradshaw to say the Steelers never should have gotten rid of him. Injuries Cowboys: S Donovan Wilson suffered a knee injury ... NEW YORK (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump’s lawyers urged a judge again Friday to throw out his hush money conviction, balking at the prosecution’s suggestion of preserving the verdict by treating the case the way some courts do when a defendant dies. They called the idea “absurd.” The Manhattan district attorney's office is asking Judge Juan M. Merchan to “pretend as if one of the assassination attempts against President Trump had been successful,” Trump’s lawyers wrote in a blistering 23-page response. In court papers made public Tuesday, District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office proposed an array of options for keeping the historic conviction on the books after Trump’s lawyers filed paperwork earlier this month asking for the case to be dismissed. They include freezing the case until Trump leaves office in 2029, agreeing that any future sentence won't include jail time, or closing the case by noting he was convicted but that he wasn't sentenced and his appeal wasn’t resolved because of presidential immunity. Trump lawyers Todd Blanche and Emil Bove reiterated Friday their position that the only acceptable option is overturning his conviction and dismissing his indictment, writing that anything less will interfere with the transition process and his ability to lead the country. The Manhattan district attorney’s office declined comment. It’s unclear how soon Merchan will decide. He could grant Trump’s request for dismissal, go with one of the prosecution’s suggestions, wait until a federal appeals court rules on Trump’s parallel effort to get the case moved out of state court, or choose some other option. In their response Friday, Blanche and Bove ripped each of the prosecution’s suggestions. Halting the case until Trump leaves office would force the incoming president to govern while facing the “ongoing threat” that he’ll be sentenced to imprisonment, fines or other punishment as soon as his term ends, Blanche and Bove wrote. Trump, a Republican, takes office Jan. 20. “To be clear, President Trump will never deviate from the public interest in response to these thuggish tactics,” the defense lawyers wrote. “However, the threat itself is unconstitutional.” The prosecution’s suggestion that Merchan could mitigate those concerns by promising not to sentence Trump to jail time on presidential immunity grounds is also a non-starter, Blanche and Bove wrote. The immunity statute requires dropping the case, not merely limiting sentencing options, they argued. Blanche and Bove, both of whom Trump has tabbed for high-ranking Justice Department positions, expressed outrage at the prosecution’s novel suggestion that Merchan borrow from Alabama and other states and treat the case as if Trump had died. Blanche and Bove accused prosecutors of ignoring New York precedent and attempting to “fabricate” a solution “based on an extremely troubling and irresponsible analogy between President Trump" who survived assassination attempts in Pennsylvania in July and Florida in September “and a hypothetical dead defendant.” Such an option normally comes into play when a defendant dies after being convicted but before appeals are exhausted. It is unclear whether it is viable under New York law, but prosecutors suggested that Merchan could innovate in what’s already a unique case. “This remedy would prevent defendant from being burdened during his presidency by an ongoing criminal proceeding,” prosecutors wrote in their filing this week. But at the same time, it wouldn’t “precipitously discard” the “meaningful fact that defendant was indicted and found guilty by a jury of his peers.” Prosecutors acknowledged that “presidential immunity requires accommodation” during Trump’s impending return to the White House but argued that his election to a second term should not upend the jury’s verdict, which came when he was out of office. Longstanding Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution . Other world leaders don’t enjoy the same protection. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is on trial on corruption charges even as he leads that nation’s wars in Lebanon and Gaza . Trump has been fighting for months to reverse his May 30 conviction on 34 counts of falsifying business records . Prosecutors said he fudged the documents to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn actor Stormy Daniels to suppress her claim that they had sex a decade earlier, which Trump denies. In their filing Friday, Trump’s lawyers citing a social media post in which Sen. John Fetterman used profane language to criticize Trump’s hush money prosecution. The Pennsylvania Democrat suggested that Trump deserved a pardon, comparing his case to that of President Joe Biden’s pardoned son Hunter Biden, who had been convicted of tax and gun charges . “Weaponizing the judiciary for blatant, partisan gain diminishes the collective faith in our institutions and sows further division,” Fetterman wrote Wednesday on Truth Social. Trump’s hush money conviction was in state court, meaning a presidential pardon — issued by Biden or himself when he takes office — would not apply to the case. Presidential pardons only apply to federal crimes. Since the election, special counsel Jack Smith has ended his two federal cases , which pertained to Trump’s efforts to overturn his 2020 election loss and allegations that he hoarded classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate. A separate state election interference case in Fulton County, Georgia, is largely on hold. Trump denies wrongdoing in all. Trump had been scheduled for sentencing in the hush money case in late November. But following Trump’s Nov. 5 election victory, Merchan halted proceedings and indefinitely postponed the former and future president’s sentencing so the defense and prosecution could weigh in on the future of the case. Merchan also delayed a decision on Trump’s prior bid to dismiss the case on immunity grounds. A dismissal would erase Trump’s conviction, sparing him the cloud of a criminal record and possible prison sentence. Trump is the first former president to be convicted of a crime and the first convicted criminal to be elected to the office.Berlin: Tech billionaire Elon Musk caused uproar after backing Germany’s far-right party in a major newspaper ahead of key parliamentary elections in the Western European country, leading to the resignation of Welt am Sonntag’ s opinion editor in protest. Germany is to vote in an early election on February 23 after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party governing coalition collapsed last month in a dispute over how to revitalise the country’s stagnant economy. Elon Musk has involved himself deeply in US politics - now he’s turned his attention to Germany. Credit: AP Musk’s guest opinion piece for Welt am Sonntag — a sister publication of POLITICO owned by the Axel Springer Group — published in German over the weekend, was the second time this month he supported the Alternative for Germany, or AfD . “The Alternative for Germany (AfD) is the last spark of hope for this country,” Musk wrote in his translated commentary. He went on to say the far-right party “can lead the country into a future where economic prosperity, cultural integrity and technological innovation are not just wishes, but reality”. Loading The Tesla Motors chief executive also wrote that his investment in Germany gave him the right to comment on the country’s condition. The AfD is polling strongly, but its candidate for the top job, Alice Weidel, has no realistic chance of becoming chancellor because other parties refuse to work with the far-right party. An ally of US President-elect Donald Trump, the technology billionaire challenged in his opinion piece the party’s public image. “The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Musk’s commentary has led to a debate in German media over the boundaries of free speech, with the paper’s own opinion editor announcing her resignation, pointedly on Musk’s social media platform, X. “I always enjoyed leading the opinion section of WELT and WAMS. Today an article by Elon Musk appeared in Welt am Sonntag . I handed in my resignation yesterday after it went to print,” Eva Marie Kogel wrote. After two exhausting weeks of chaotic bargaining and sleepless nights, nearly 200 nations pushed through the contentious finance pact in the early hours in a sports stadium in Azerbaijan. But the applause had barely subsided when India delivered a full-throated rejection of the "abysmally poor" deal, kicking off a firestorm of criticism from across the developing world. "It's a paltry sum," thundered India's delegate Chandni Raina. "This document is little more than an optical illusion. This, in our opinion, will not address the enormity of the challenge we all face." Sierra Leone's climate minister Jiwoh Abdulai said it showed a "lack of goodwill" from rich countries to stand by the world's poorest as they confront rising seas and harsher droughts. Nigeria's envoy Nkiruka Maduekwe put it even more bluntly: "This is an insult." Developing nations arrived in the Caspian Sea city of Baku hoping to secure a massive financial boost from rich countries many times above their existing pledge of $100 billion a year. Tina Stege, climate envoy for the Marshall Islands, said she would return home with only a "small portion" of what she fought for, but not empty-handed. "It isn't nearly enough, but it's a start," said Stege, whose atoll nation homeland faces an existential threat from creeping sea levels. Nations had struggled at COP29 to reconcile long-standing divisions over how much developed nations most accountable for historic greenhouse gas pollution should provide to poorer countries least responsible but most impacted by Earth's rapid warming. The meeting also saw stalling on the promise to "transition away" from fossil fuels, the main driver of global heating. That pledge, a key achievement of COP28 in Dubai, was scrubbed from the final Baku deal. The Least Developed Countries bloc of 45 nations slammed the COP29 outcome as a "travesty", adding that it failed to make progress on curbing warming, or deliver enough cash to protect the most vulnerable. "This is not just a failure; it is a betrayal," the group said in a statement. Nations have agreed to try to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial times. Currently the world is on track for devastating warming of between 2.6C and 3.1C this century, according to the UN. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he had "hoped for a more ambitious outcome" and appealed to governments to see it as a starting point. Developed countries only put the $300 billion figure on the table on Saturday after COP29 went into extra time and diplomats worked through the night to improve an earlier spurned offer. Bleary-eyed diplomats, huddled anxiously in groups, were still polishing the final phrasing on the plenary floor in the dying hours before the deal passed. UK Energy Secretary Ed Miliband hailed "a critical eleventh-hour deal at the eleventh hour for the climate". At points, the talks appeared on the brink of collapse. Delegates stormed out of meetings, fired shots across the bow, and threatened to walk away from the negotiating table should rich nations not cough up more cash. In the end -- despite repeating that "no deal is better than a bad deal" -- developing nations did not stand in the way of an agreement. US President Joe Biden cast the agreement reached in Baku as a "historic outcome". EU climate envoy Wopke Hoekstra said it would be remembered as "the start of a new era for climate finance". The agreement commits developed nations to pay at least $300 billion a year by 2035 to help developing countries cut emissions and prepare for worsening disasters. It falls short of the $390 billion that economists commissioned by the United Nations had deemed a fair share contribution by developed nations. The US and EU pushed to have newly wealthy emerging economies like China -- the world's largest emitter -- chip in. Wealthy nations said it was politically unrealistic to expect more in direct government funding at a time of geopolitical uncertainty and economic belt-tightening. Donald Trump, a sceptic of both climate change and foreign assistance, was elected just days before COP29 began and his victory cast a pall over the UN talks. Other countries, particularly in the EU -- the largest contributor of climate finance -- saw right-wing backlashes against the green agenda, not fertile conditions for raising big sums of public money. The final deal "encourages" developing countries to make contributions on a voluntary basis, reflecting no change for China, which already provides climate finance on its own terms. The deal also posits a larger overall target of $1.3 trillion per year to cope with rising temperatures and disasters, but most would come from private sources.

The rising price of paying the national debt is a risk for Trump's promises on growth and inflation WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump has big plans for the economy. He also has big debt problem that'll be a hurdle to delivering on those plan. Trump has bold ambitions on tax cuts, tariffs and other programs. But high interest rates and the price of repaying the federal government’s existing debt could limit what he’s able to do. The federal debt stands at roughly $36 trillion, and the spike in inflation after the pandemic has pushed up the government’s borrowing costs such that debt service next year will easily exceed spending on national security. 'Wicked' and 'Gladiator' make gravity-defying theater debuts NEW YORK (AP) — “Wicked” and “Gladiator II” have debuted in theaters with a combined $270 million in ticket sales. Their worldwide performance breathed fresh life into global box office results that have struggled lately. Together the films turned the moviegoing weekend into one of the busiest of the year. Jon M. Chu’s lavish big-budget musical “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, debuted with $114 million domestically and $164.2 million globally. Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” is a sequel to his 2000 best picture-winning original and launched with $55.5 million in ticket sales. “Moana 2” is being released Wednesday, so it looks like Hollywood might be looking at historic sales over the Thanksgiving holiday. Trump's Republican Party is increasingly winning union voters. It's a shift seen in his labor pick WASHINGTON (AP) — Working-class voters helped Republicans make steady election gains this year and expanded a coalition that increasingly includes rank-and-file union members. It's a political shift spotlighting one of President-elect Donald Trump’s latest Cabinet picks: a GOP congresswoman, who has drawn labor support, to be his labor secretary. Oregon Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer narrowly lost her bid for a second term this month, despite strong backing from union members. They're a key part of the Democratic base but are gravitating in the Trump era toward a Republican Party traditionally allied with business interests. Trump raced to pick many Cabinet posts. He took more time to settle on a treasury secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump launched a blitz of picks for his Cabinet, but he took his time settling on billionaire investor Scott Bessent as his choice for treasury secretary. The Republican not only wanted someone who jibes with him, but an official who can execute his economic vision and look straight out of central casting while doing so. With his Yale University education and pedigree trading for Soros Fund Management before establishing his own funds, Bessent will be tasked with a delicate balancing act. Trump expects him to help reset the global trade order, enable trillions of dollars in tax cuts, ensure inflation stays in check, manage a ballooning national debt and still keep the financial markets confident. Trump chooses Bessent to be treasury secretary, Vought as budget chief, Chavez-DeRemer for Labor WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen hedge fund manager Scott Bessent, an advocate for deficit reduction, to serve as his next treasury secretary. Bessent, 62, is founder of hedge fund Key Square Capital Management. He previously had worked on and off for Soros Fund Management since 1991. Trump also said he would nominate Russell Vought, 48, to lead the Office of Management and Budget, a position he held during Trump's first term. And Trump chose Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, an Oregon Republican, as his labor secretary, and Scott Turner, a former football player who worked in Trump’s first administration, as his housing secretary. Afraid of losing the US-Canada trade pact, Mexico alters its laws and removes Chinese parts MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico has been taking a bashing for allegedly serving as a conduit for Chinese parts and products into North America. Officials here are terrified that a re-elected Donald Trump or politically struggling Justin Trudeau could simply expel their country from the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. Mexico's ruling Morena party is so afraid its has gone on a campaign to get companies to replace Chinese parts with locally made ones. And its legislators are consciously tweaking the wording of major laws to try to make them compatible with the trade pact's language. Mexico hopes the rules of the trade pact would prevent the U.S. or Canada from simply walking away. Australia withdraws a misinformation bill after critics compare it to censorship CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s government has withdrawn a bill that would give a media watchdog power to monitor digital platforms and require them to keep records about misinformation and disinformation on their networks. Communications Minister Michelle Rowland said Sunday that the government was unable to drum up the support needed to pass the legislation. The opposition spokesman, David Coleman, said the bill “betrayed our democracy” and amounted to “censorship laws in Australia.” The bill would have granted the Australian Communications and Media Authority power over digital platforms by approving an enforceable code of conduct or standards for social media companies if self-regulation fell short. He'll be the last meatpacker in the Meatpacking District. Here's how NYC's gritty 'hood got chic NEW YORK (AP) — The last meatpackers in New York's Meatpacking District have agreed to end their leases early and make way for development on their city-owned lot. A third-generation meatpacker says he is ready to retire and he'll be proud to be there when the building closes. The closure date has not been set, but will mark the end of over a century of industrial life in the Meatpacking District. Starting in the 1970s, a new nightlife scene emerged as bars and nightclubs moved in. Today it's a hub for shopping, tourism, and recreation and only echoes of that grit remain. US budget airlines are struggling. Will pursuing premium passengers solve their problems? DALLAS (AP) — Delta and United Airlines have become the most profitable U.S. airlines by targeting premium customers while also winning a significant share of budget travelers. That is squeezing smaller low-fare carriers like Spirit Airlines, which filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday. Some travel industry experts think Spirit’s troubles indicate less-wealthy passengers will have fewer choices and higher prices. Other discount airlines are on better financial footing but also are lagging far behind the full-service airlines when it comes to recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Most industry experts think Frontier and other so-called ultra-low-cost carriers will fill the vacuum if Spirit shrinks, and that there's still plenty of competition to prevent prices from spiking. What to know about Scott Bessent, Trump's pick for treasury secretary WASHINGTON (AP) — President-elect Donald Trump has chosen money manager Scott Bessent, an advocate for deficit reduction and deregulation, to serve as his next treasury secretary. Bessent is a past supporter of Democrats who has become an enthusiastic supporter of Trump. He’s an advocate of cutting spending while extending the tax cuts approved by Congress in Trump’s first term. He has said tariffs imposed during a second Trump administration would be directed primarily at China.US lawmakers concluded a two-year investigation Monday into the Covid-19 outbreak that killed 1.1 million Americans -- backing the theory that the virus likely leaked from a Chinese laboratory. A 520-page report from the Republican-controlled House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic looked at the federal and state-level response, as well as the pandemic's origins and vaccination efforts. "This work will help the United States, and the world, predict the next pandemic, prepare for the next pandemic, protect ourselves from the next pandemic, and hopefully prevent the next pandemic," panel chairman Brad Wenstrup said in a letter to Congress. US federal agencies, the World Health Organization and scientists across the planet have arrived at different conclusions about the most likely origin of Covid-19, and no consensus has emerged. Most believe it to have spread from animals in China, but a US intelligence analysis said last year that the virus may have been genetically engineered and escaped from a virology lab in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where human cases first emerged. The congressional panel was persuaded by the lab leak theory after meeting 25 times, conducting more than 30 transcribed interviews and reviewing more than one million pages of documents. The investigation included two days of interviews behind closed doors with Anthony Fauci, the government scientist who became the nation's most trusted expert in the chaotic early days of the 2020 outbreak. Fauci's clashes with former and incoming president Donald Trump over the response sparked fury on the right, and he now lives with security protection following death threats against his family. Republicans accuse the 83-year-old immunologist of helping to set off the worst pandemic in a century by approving funding passed on to Chinese scientists they accuse of manufacturing the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes Covid-19. Among its headline conclusions, the report said the National Institutes of Health had indeed funded contentious "gain-of-function" research -- which seeks to enhance viruses as a way of finding ways to combat them -- at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. Fauci angrily denied covering up the origins of Covid-19 before the panel in June, arguing that it would be "molecularly impossible" for the bat viruses studied at the lab to be turned into the virus that caused the pandemic. But the panel's report said SARS-CoV-2 "likely emerged because of a laboratory or research related accident." The probe found that lockdowns "did more harm than good" and that mask mandates were "ineffective at controlling the spread of Covid-19," contradicting other research showing that masking in public does reduce transmission rates. Social distancing guidelines also came under criticism, although travel restrictions were deemed to have saved lives. Investigators found that Trump's Operation Warp Speed -- the publicly-funded project to develop Covid vaccines -- was a "tremendous success" but that school closures would have an "enduring impact" on US children. ft/jgc

Krishna Das is widely recognised as a leading voice for the rights of Bangladeshi Hindus. The Hindu priest's arrest came amid a series of attacks on minorities in Bangladeshafer interim government took over the charge earlier this year. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Suvendu Adhikari hit out at Yunus. "Renowned firebrand Hindu Leader; Shri Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu has been abducted by the Detective Branch at Dhaka Airport in Bangladesh. He is leading the fight for the survival & dignity of the Hindu Minorities of Bangladesh," Adhikari said in his X post. "The Bangladeshi Sanatani Community fear that Md Yunus's 'Radical' Regime may stoop to any level, even eliminate 'perceived threats' to its authority. Famous chef announces closures of Yountville restaurantWAKE RADIOLOGY’S DR. RAJ B. GONDALIA NAMED TO INAUGURAL RADIOLOGY BUSINESS 40 UNDER 40 LIST

FRISCO, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys ' injury-plagued 2024 season took another turn on Thursday with the team announcing they are shutting down All-Pro wide receiver CeeDee Lamb for the team's final two games. His AC joint sprain in the right shoulder continued to devolve to the point to where it wasn't worth the risk to have him out on the field given Dallas (7-8) is eliminated from postseason contention. Lamb's teammates marveled at his toughness and will to power through an injury that bothered the wideout so much Lamb said he was seriously focused on "keeping my shoulder attached to my body." "I know his shoulder has been bothering him, but I think for CeeDee (what) was so impressive -- and he might be the best player that I've seen with my own eyes -- is that man ... he just loves the game of football," Cowboys three-time All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons said Thursday. "I don't think anyone should ever question how much CeeDee brings to the team, or his factor. He's QB proof." Lamb registered 935 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns on 74 receptions as a rookie in 2020 when Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending ankle injury before ripping off 1,000 or more yards receiving in each of his last four NFL seasons. He led the entire league with 135 receptions while ranking second in receiving yards (1,749) in 2023, which led to him earning first-team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career. His 496 career receptions are the second most through a player's first five seasons in NFL history, just 14 behind former New Orleans Saints Pro Bowler Michael Thomas ' record of 510 set in the 2016 through 2020 seasons. "I've seen him get 1,000 [receiving yards] with Andy Dalton [in 2020]," Parsons said. "I've seen him get 1,000 with Dak Prescott [from 2021-2023]. I've seen him get 1,000 with Cooper Rush [in 2024]. At one point, you give grace to all these other wide receivers and say 'Oh, they're not producing because they don't got their quarterback.' But CeeDee has shown time and time again that he can do it with anyone throwing him the rock. He can find a way to get open. He's competitive. He's a dog ... when it comes to what he's going fight through, man, I just don't think he's comparable. That's why I think he's the best." Cowboys fill-in starting quarterback Cooper Rush was asked on Thursday what he would miss the most if Lamb were to be out for the team's final two regular season games. "Obviously his production," Rush said. He called Lamb "a warrior" after his Week 17 performance against Tampa Bay in which Lamb caught seven passes for 105 yards receiving. "He's a warrior," Rush said of Lamb postgame on Sunday night. "That guy is as tough as they come. He's out there, moving him around, throwing it to him or handing it to him. It felt real good to get him down the field tonight. He's been doing a lot of shorter stuff, throwing screens, yards after catch and tonight he showed what he can do down the field, too." During the end of the first half of that game, Lamb landed hard on his shoulder, which left him officially questionable to return. Almost right after the announcement was made, Lamb returned to action, and he caught a 10-yard pass that came up just an inch short of a touchdown. Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott bulldozed into the end zone to give Dallas a 20-7 lead on the very next play with under two minutes left in the second quarter. "I really scored," Lamb said postgame Sunday night with a smile. "But yeah, my shoulder is out of whack. Bro, I'm not even going to even lie to you. I'm just out there battling and doing what I do. Yeah, bro, it's not fun." Dallas is now without the following Week 1 starters: quarterback Dak Prescott (hamstring tear), wide receiver CeeDee Lamb (AC joint sprain in shoulder), right guard Zack Martin (ankle), edge rusher DeMarcus Lawrence (foot), linebacker DeMarvion Overshown (knee) and cornerback Trevon Diggs (knee). Earlier on Thursday, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy made it clear no player would be forced to suit up the final two games of the season if they weren't healthy, and that's clearly the case given the announcement about Lamb. Dallas has two games remaining in their 2024 season at the Philadelphia Eagles (12-3) in Week 17 and home versus the Washington Commanders (10-5) in Week 18. "There's a lot that goes into this, but the players are not forced to play," McCarthy said on Thursday. "That's why you have the return to practice group, the rehab group, so there's a process. There's protocols in place to ensure that because I think it's even been heightened even more with the 17-game season and so forth. That part hasn't changed because of our record. We'll go through the week, and the 48 players we feel give us the best chance to win the game that are healthy, will play."

Gov. Jay Inslee’s budget proposal offered some hope for child care and early learning advocates who were prepared to fight against deep cuts. Inslee’s plan would boost child care slots, provider rates and money for early learning facilities. But in an effort to save money, he also proposes delaying the expansion of some expensive programs and subsidies set to take effect next year. Advocates say it could be much worse, especially given a budget deficit of at least $10 billion to $12 billion. No currently filled slots would be affected under Inslee’s proposal. “We’re just relieved we’re not going backward,” said Joel Ryan, executive director of the Washington State Association of Head Start and Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program. Inslee’s budget is far from a final plan. And it is underpinned by his idea to raise revenue through a new tax on the wealthy and higher taxes on businesses. Those ideas are certain to get pushback from some lawmakers when they convene in January and begin work on budget legislation. Inslee, meanwhile, is on his way out of office and has limited sway over budget talks. Gov.-elect Bob Ferguson could come to the table with his own ideas about how to approach child care policy and spending. What’s clear though is that without additional revenue or shifting substantial dollars from somewhere else in the budget, the state will likely have to make much deeper cuts than what Inslee proposed. “The challenge for all of us over the next few months is that this is going to be considered the high mark,” said Katy Warren, deputy director of the Washington State Association of Head Start and ECEAP. “There’s no going up from here.” The biggest change Inslee proposes is delaying expansions planned under the Fair Start for Kids Act. The 2021 law expands and guarantees access to state-paid early learning programs and subsidized child care for families with lower household incomes. It funded new slots for providers and increased the number of families who can use them. So far, the investments from that law are working, according to the Department of Children, Youth and Families. “We’re seeing the investments pay off that more families are accessing care that they can afford,” agency spokesperson Allison Krutsinger told the House Appropriations Committee earlier this month. Under the Fair Start for Kids Act, eligibility and access are supposed to continue expanding through 2030. But as eligibility expands so do expenses associated with the programs — one of the big drivers of the state’s multi-billion dollar deficit. Starting in the 2026-2027 school year, the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program is planned to become an entitlement, guaranteeing access to families below a certain income. This program provides child care and other support services for 3- and 4-year-olds and younger children in some locations. Meanwhile, Working Connections Child Care, the state’s subsidy program, is supposed to increase eligibility for families with up to 75% of the state median income starting next July. To save money throughout the next four years, Inslee proposed delaying the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program expansion to the 2030-2031 school year. That delay would save the state about $146 million through 2027. Inslee also proposed delaying the subsidy expansion to 2031, a move that would save the state $119.5 million through 2027. The delays don’t mean cuts to families currently using the programs, but they do mean a longer wait for future families who might have been eligible starting next year, leading to mixed reactions from child care leaders. “Working parents and child care providers are forced to make unreasonable choices to make child care work with their careers and their bank accounts,” Genevieve Stokes, director of Government Relations for Child Care Aware of Washington, said in a statement. To some, the delays make sense. Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program and Working Connections providers are struggling to hire staff, leaving many slots unfilled. Warren said Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program advocates were planning to ask for a delay of that program’s expansion because there weren’t enough providers ready to handle the influx of new children who would be eligible. To increase the number of providers across the state, Inslee’s budget puts new investments into their rates over the next two years. He proposes an 18% rate increase for Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program school-day providers starting in July. He also includes $510 million to fund rate increases for providers who take Working Connections subsidies. That would bring their rates up to the 85th percentile of 2024 market rates , a requirement under the Fair Start for Kids Act. Those investments are a welcome relief to advocates who say increased provider pay is long overdue. “There are families who really need these critical services,” Ryan said. “They can’t get it if the workforce leaves.” Along with increases to provider pay, Inslee’s proposed budget adds more slots for the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program through some restructuring. He proposes removing 845 unfilled part-day child care slots, which his office said aren’t always appealing to parents who work full days. He then converts 250 of those into full school-day slots and adds 500 more, for a total of 750 more slots starting in 2026. The budget also sets aside $58.6 million in the capital budget for construction and improvement of early learning facilities. Ryan credited the Inslee administration for providing support for early learning though he acknowledged it’s not everything advocates were hoping for. He said they’d push legislators to limit cuts to current slots and prioritize funding for provider rates. In 2022, one of them against Musk for market manipulation and insider trading, though the case was dismissed in August 2024. Why has dogecoin—a meme coin that was never meant to be taken seriously as an investment—seen such extreme swings in value? We're all in this together Dogecoin was launched in 2013 to spoof bitcoin and a slew of other cryptocurrencies that were claiming to disrupt the traditional world of finance. , copied the code of an existing coin, and branded it with the already popular Doge —a picture of a Shiba Inu dog surrounded by fragments of broken English: "wow much coin." Although pointless and undesirable, it became one of the most popular and enduring cryptocurrencies on the market. Following dogecoin's previous surge in 2021, its fervent network of influencers and everyday investors worked together to draw tremendous attention—and capital—to the joke currency. To understand the appeal of these absurd investments, you have to look at the time and energy that users invest into these networks and the rewards, both financial and social, they get in return. Meme coins are collaborative enterprises. Members of these online communities have an economic incentive to become outspoken boosters: The more the value of dogecoin rises, the more their investments grow. But they also receive social validation from other meme coin investors when they pump up the coin. In other words, behind every meme coin is a collective of strangers on a communal mission to make more money. Dogecoin and its imitators have been described by their leadership as , and projects. Beyond branding the assets with culturally resonant images, whether it's a or , successful crypto ventures are characterized by complex webs of trust. Trust in the technology. Trust in its potential for future appreciation. And trust that those holding power in the networks won't exploit the rest. This loyalty is woven among a global network of users who collaborate around the clock to promote their coin and demonstrate their unwavering commitment to its success. In times of price appreciation, the collective . During price dips, community members mutually reinforce their comrades'—and their own—beliefs that this is just a bump in the road and that their collective efforts will eventually lead to a handsome payoff. Even in the coldest of , this ritualistic behavior helps these speculative communities endure. Community serves as a substitute for financial loss. The investment strategies in these communities—and the conviction in their payoff—involve repeating and reposting what others have said, like any traditional internet meme. Trolling traditional valuation The real value of meme coins cannot be understood in the same way as traditional assets, such as stocks and physical commodities. These types of assets have fundamentals, such as a company's financial statements, or public demand for basic goods, from coffee to oil. Conversely, the fundamentals of meme coins are reflected in their network activity, such as daily active users, and less concrete metrics, such as social sentiment and —how much public awareness a coin has generated compared with its rivals. Of course, the valuations of traditional assets are also affected by these social factors. The difference is that meme coins offer little by way of productive activity. They add nothing to the economy. Occasionally, their leadership will , but these are generally added as afterthoughts, especially as a way to drum up more speculative excitement. Meme coins troll the traditional conventions of valuation and mock the edicts and dogmas of mainstream investors. And that's exactly the point. Participation in meme coin communities—or any crypto community, for that matter—entails embracing an alternative economic experience. They are speculative sandboxes for playing outside of the conventional rules of investment. Who let the Doge out? Musk is the quintessential meme influencer. As the richest man in the world, he's viewed by many as a paragon of savvy investing. extends far beyond dogecoin's social network. And his promotional efforts are playful—so playful that the judge in his class-action case as mere "puffery" and that "no reasonable investor could rely upon them." Dogecoin previously reached the peak of its memetic momentum when Musk appeared on "Saturday Night Live." Now, instead of sitting at the Weekend Update news desk cracking jokes, he's sitting in Trump's office advising the president-elect. LOUIS , Dec. 20, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Eric Watkins , President of Abstrakt, is shedding light on the significant challenges businesses face when building in-house Sales Development Representative (SDR) teams. Rising costs, complex technology needs, and extended timelines are making outsourcing an increasingly attractive option for companies seeking efficient and effective sales solutions. "We often find companies have already tried to do this all on their own and struggled," said Watkins. "It's a lot of puzzle pieces to put together, and working with a professional team that does this exclusively often gets better results." Watkins noted that businesses often underestimate the full scope of building an SDR team, from recruiting and onboarding skilled personnel to investing in necessary software and AI tools. Additional hurdles include developing outreach strategies, maintaining accountability metrics, and ensuring consistent performance tracking. "Building your own team can be a good route if you have the fully dedicated resources to do so," Watkins said. "But it requires a lot of software, content planning, research tools, and follow-through on sequencing." The rise of AI-driven sales tools has added to the complexity, with many companies struggling to optimize these technologies for maximum impact. Watkins explained that companies often lack the expertise to effectively integrate AI into their outreach efforts, further extending the time and cost required to build a functional SDR team. For many businesses, outsourcing to specialized teams like Abstrakt provides a faster and more cost-effective solution. By eliminating the need for ongoing training, technology investment, and process development, outsourcing offers immediate access to experienced professionals and proven systems. Abstrakt, which handles over 100,000 appointments annually across industries, has seen firsthand how outsourcing delivers measurable results for its clients. "Evaluate your resources, timeline, and ability to stay accountable to your sales goals," Watkins advised. "If there are gaps, partnering with a team that specializes in this work can help you grow faster and more effectively." Abstrakt is a B2B lead generation and marketing agency based in St. Louis, Missouri . With over a decade of experience, the company specializes in omnichannel appointment setting and helping businesses achieve measurable growth. Wheel was an iconic figure of the 1970s and early 1980s and won 32 caps for his country. In a touching message to one of their great former players, Swansea RFC stated that Wheel passed away in the early hours of Boxing Day. The statement claimed that Wheel's motor neurone disease (MND) had "not prevented him attending matches" until this season. Motor neurone disease affects specialist nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, and causes everyday activities to become increasingly difficult or completely impossible. The majority of those diagnosed with the disease are given a three-year life expectancy starting from when they first notice the symptoms. MND slowly robs patients of the ability to walk, talk and eat, although every sufferer is different. A full statement from Swansea RFC read: "Geoff was a player and man loved and respected by all who knew him. "A fearsome competitor on the field of play, Geoff was a mild mannered, shy and thoughtful person in private, committed to the club he served from 1970 to 1983, twice as captain, as a player and for many years on the All Whites Former Players Association (AWFPA) committee, being at the time of his passing the President of the AWFPA." The statement added: "Geoff’s two seasons as captain of Swansea marked a hugely successful period for the club. In 1979-80 they won the Western Mail Championship , Sunday Telegraph Anglo-Welsh Championship, Daily Mail Anglo-Welsh Championship, Sunday Telegraph Team of the Season and were WRU National Sevens winners. Most read in Sport "In the following season under Geoff’s captaincy Swansea retained the Sunday Telegraph title and were also winners of the Whitbread Merit Table. "Typically, Geoff remained the modest man he always had been and the whole team were the beneficiaries of this approach." With Wales, Wheel once went 15 games unbeaten between January 1975 and March 1978. The Welsh legend scooped up four Triple Crowns and two Grand Slams during his stellar career. St Thomas Church also paid tribute to Wheel after his passing. A statement on their Facebook page read: "To most of Wales he was a rugby legend, but to us he was our friend, organist, treasurer, trustee, food bank volunteer and boys brigade tuck shop salesman. "He was the most humble man, always putting those around him first. He loved to serve the church in any way he could, from his musical talents to counting the kids on and off the bus on every trip. "From giving free tuck away to the kids who didn’t bring money, to collecting the food from the foodbank. "A fiercely loyal, talented and committed friend and church member. Totally committed too...and so proud to be...an Eastside boy. "We can only imagine the joy in his eyes as he stands face to face with the saviour he has worshipped every day for such a long time in his life. "Our prayers are with Christine and all the family." Users on social media also weighed in with their own thoughts after Wheel's death. One wrote: "Gutted. We have lost a true gentleman. He was a friend and colleague over a number of decades. You will be missed Geoffrey Arthur Derek Wheel aka The Legend." "Such a lovely generous humble man.R.I.P. Geoff you will be missed by so many," said a second. Another said: "God bless, a truly amazing man. Thoughts and prayers with Christine and his family." Muscle weakness and stiff joints are common symptoms of motor neurone disease. Other potential indicators of MND , which affects around 5,000 people in the UK, include a loss of muscle mass, or wasting, and movement and mobility problems. Stiffness is also common, as are cramps, twitches and spasms. And many people will experience speech and communication issues, breathlessness and changes in saliva. MND is caused by a problem with cells in the brain and nerves called motor neurones. These cells gradually stop working over time, but it's not known why this happens, the NHS says. While motor neurone disease isn’t usually painful, symptoms can be extremely debilitating. It is usually diagnosed in people over the age of 50, and men are at more risk than women, but it's important to remember that many people outside of this are affected. Some have a life expectancy of just a few months, while other forms of the disease don't affect lifespan. In many cases, signs of the disease will begin gradually. Typically, this will occur on one side of the body only, before progressively worsening. Muscle weakness and muscle spasms are common, while swallowing and breathing may also become a difficult task. Heartbreakingly, motor neurone disease may leave the diagnosed unable to move or communicate property with stiff joints. Even though there has been research into the cause of motor neurone disease, it is difficult to identify a particular trigger for the disease. Some five to ten per cent of all people with MND have the inherited or genetic form of the disease, while genes may still play a small part in other cases. Wheel is not the only sporting figure to have been affected by MND. Inspirational England rugby league star Rob Burrow died in June this year after battling motor neurone disease for four years. The Leeds Rhinos legend was diagnosed with MND in 2019, just two years after retiring from a 17-season league career and his diagnosis has helped raise £15m for charity. Read More on The US Sun Burrows met former Scotland rugby union player and fellow MND sufferer Doddie Weir, who revealed in 2017 that he had been diagnosed with MND at just 46 years old. Fernando Ricksen was an ex-Rangers player who was diagnosed in motor neurone disease in 2013 and tragically died after a six-year battle on September 18, 2019.

Some quotations from Jimmy Carter: We have a tendency to exalt ourselves and to dwell on the weaknesses and mistakes of others. I have come to realize that in every person there is something fine and pure and noble, along with a desire for self-fulfillment. Political and religious leaders must attempt to provide a society within which these human attributes can be nurtured and enhanced. — from 1975 book “Why Not the Best?” Our government can express the highest common ideals of human beings — if we demand of government true standards of excellence. At this Bicentennial time of introspection and concern, we must demand such standards. — “Why Not the Best?” I am a Southerner and an American, I am a farmer, an engineer, a father and husband, a Christian, a politician and former governor, a planner, a businessman, a nuclear physicist, a naval officer, a canoeist, and among other things a lover of Bob Dylan’s songs and Dylan Thomas’s poetry. — “Why Not the Best?” Christ said, “I tell you that anyone who looks on a woman with lust has in his heart already committed adultery.” I’ve looked on a lot of women with lust. I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times. This is something that God recognizes I will do — and I have done it — and God forgives me for it. But that doesn’t mean that I condemn someone who not only looks on a woman with lust but who leaves his wife and shacks up with somebody out of wedlock. — Interview, November 1976 Playboy. This inauguration ceremony marks a new beginning, a new dedication within our Government, and a new spirit among us all. A President may sense and proclaim that new spirit, but only a people can provide it. — Inaugural address, January 1977. It’s clear that the true problems of our nation are much deeper — deeper than gasoline lines or energy shortages, deeper even than inflation and recession. ... All the legislation in the world can’t fix what’s wrong with America. ... It is a crisis of confidence. — So-called “malaise” speech, July 1979. But we know that democracy is always an unfinished creation. Each generation must renew its foundations. Each generation must rediscover the meaning of this hallowed vision in the light of its own modern challenges. For this generation, ours, life is nuclear survival; liberty is human rights; the pursuit of happiness is a planet whose resources are devoted to the physical and spiritual nourishment of its inhabitants. — Farewell Address, January 1981. We appreciate the past. We are grateful for the present and we’re looking forward to the future with great anticipation and commitment. — October 1986, at the dedication of the Carter Presidential Library and Museum. War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn to live together in peace by killing each other’s children. — December 2002, Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech. Fundamentalists have become increasingly influential in both religion and government, and have managed to change the nuances and subtleties of historic debate into black-and-white rigidities and the personal derogation of those who dare to disagree. ... The influence of these various trends poses a threat to many of our nation’s historic customs and moral commitments, both in government and in houses of worship. — From 2005 book “Our Endangered Values.” I think that this breakthrough by Barack Obama has been remarkable. When he made his speech (on race) a few months ago in Philadelphia, I wept. I sat in front of the television and cried, because I saw that as the most enlightening and transforming analysis of racism and a potential end of it that I ever saw in my life. — August 2008, commenting on then-Sen. Barack Obama’s candidacy. I think it’s based on racism. There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president. ... No matter who he is or how much we disagree with his policies, the president should be treated with respect. — September 2009, reacting to Rep. Joe Wilson’s shout of “You lie!” during a speech to Congress by President Barack Obama. I’m still determined to outlive the last guinea worm. — 2010, on The Carter Center’s work to eradicate guinea worm disease. You know how much I raised to run against Gerald Ford? Zero. You know how much I raised to run against Ronald Reagan? Zero. You know how much will be raised this year by all presidential, Senate and House campaigns? $6 billion. That’s 6,000 millions. — September 2012, reacting to the 2010 “Citizens United” U.S. Supreme Court decision permitting unlimited third-party political spending. I have become convinced that the most serious and unaddressed worldwide challenge is the deprivation and abuse of women and girls, largely caused by a false interpretation of carefully selected religious texts and a growing tolerance of violence and warfare, unfortunately following the example set during my lifetime by the United States. — From 2014 book “A Call to Action.” I don’t think there’s any doubt now that the NSA or other agencies monitor or record almost every telephone call made in the United States, including cellphones, and I presume email as well. We’ve gone a long way down the road of violating Americans’ basic civil rights, as far as privacy is concerned. — March 2014, commenting on U.S. intelligence monitoring after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks We accept self-congratulations about the wonderful 50th anniversary – which is wonderful – but we feel like Lyndon Johnson did it and we don’t have to do anything anymore. — April 2014, commenting on racial inequality during a celebration of the Civil Rights Act’s 40th anniversary. I had a very challenging question at Emory (University) the other night: “How would you describe the United States of America today in one word?” And I didn’t know what to say for a few moments, but I finally said, “Searching.” I think the country in which we live is still searching for what it ought to be, and what it can be, and I’m not sure we’re making much progress right at this moment. — October 2014 during a celebration of his 90th birthday. The life we have now is the best of all. We have an expanding and harmonious family, a rich life in our church and the Plains community, and a diversity of projects at The Carter Center that is adventurous and exciting. Rosalynn and I have visited more than 145 countries, and both of us are as active as we have ever been. We are blessed with good health and look to the future with eagerness and confidence, but are prepared for inevitable adversity when it comes. — From 2015 book, “A Full Life.”

MITCHELL — Championship success, along with local and national recognition, reigned again for local sports teams and athletes in 2024. At the top of that list were the winter sports championships for Mitchell High School boys basketball and gymnastics, with both teams rising above their competition in Class AA for state titles. Here's a look at the top moments of the year in sports for the Mitchell Republic: ADVERTISEMENT A long climb back to the top for the Mitchell High School boys basketball team paid off in dramatic fashion in March, as the Kernels claimed their first Class AA state championship since 2005. A driving Markus Talley found Gavin Hinker wide open under the basket for a go-ahead layup with 30 seconds to play, and the Kernels came up with two defensive stops on the final possession to defeat Brandon Valley 46-45, as Mitchell finished the season 23-1 and on a 17-game win streak. In the wake of the title, MHS garnered three Class AA all-state selections in Talley, Colton Smith and Gavin Soukup. In the storied history of Mitchell High School gymnastics, 2024 will go down as a special season. Mitchell won the Class AA team title for a second year in a row, using a big effort at the state championships in Pierre, breaking the school team scoring record in the process with 151.444 points to edge Harrisburg for the victory. It was Mitchell’s best performance of the season by more than 2.5 points, capitalizing on talent and skill at the perfect time. It was the Kernel program’s ninth state championship, all since 2007. On individual title day, Bentley Bates claimed a pair of championships on beam and uneven bars and Olivia Prunty won the state title on vault, giving Mitchell three individual champions for the first time since 2016. National recognition for the team came later in the year, when the Kernels were recognized as the No. 1 team in the country by National High School Gymnastics Association on season scoring average. Winning a second-straight Football Championship Subdivision national title at the beginning of the 2024 calendar year, the South Dakota State football program reached another new frontier. With a dominating 23-3 win over Montana in the title game, the Jackrabbits completed a 15-0 perfect season and captured a 29th-straight victory dating back to the second game of their first championship run. Along the way, quarterback Mark Gronowski won the Walter Payton Award as the most outstanding offensive player in the subdivision. During the 2024 season this fall, SDSU went 12-3 and reached the FCS semifinals for a fifth consecutive year. ADVERTISEMENT It was a great year to be a Howard Tiger in 2024. It all started on the hardwood, where Howard emerged as the No. 5 seed to defeat three-time defending champion De Smet 60-55 in overtime for the Class B title, the Tigers’ first in 60 years. Then, in the spring, Howard made a run all the way to the Class B state baseball title game, coming up just short in a 3-2 final against powerhouse Dell Rapids. The Tigers completed the cycle with an unbeaten run to the Class 9A state championship in football this fall, holding off Wolsey-Wessington 38-30 for the title. Luke Koepsell, who was named the 2024 Mitchell Republic football player of the year, was an all-state performer in all three sports for the Tigers. After winning Class B boys cross country to end 2023 in a breakout performance, Mitchell Christian’s Silas Holdeman added to his list of accolades in 2024. First on the track, the MCS freshman claimed the Class B boys distance double by winning the 1,600 and 3,200 meters at the state championships in May. He set personal bests in both events, running 4 minutes, 29.36 seconds in the 1,600 meters and 9 minutes, 55.62 seconds in the 3,200 meters. Holdeman, now a sophomore, came agonizingly close to a state cross country title repeat in the fall, coming in second place by three-hundredths of a second on a lean at the finish line in Rapid City. One of South Dakota’s all-time best high school runners, Mount Vernon/Plankinton’s Berkeley Engelland went out on top at the 2024 South Dakota state track and field championships. Engelland claimed the Class A girls titles in both the 400 and 800 meters for the fourth consecutive year and finished her prep career as a 12-time state champion. At her final high school meet, Engelland also finished as the runner-up at 200 meters and was fourth at 100 meters in the bid to defend her sprinting and mid-distance quadruple from 2023. Engelland’s efforts earned 33 total points for the MVP girls team, which finished in fifth place overall in Class A with 52.5 points. She’s now competing at the University of South Dakota. It was a wild, memorable Class B state tournament push for the Platte Killer Tomatoes. Behind a Grant Doom one-hit shutout in Round 1, a Hunter Hewitt 10th-inning walk-off home run in Round 2 and a comeback from down 7-1 capped by another walkoff in the quarterfinals, Platte won each of its first three tournament games by a single run. In the semifinals, the Killer Tomatoes took down Sunshine League foe Dimock/Emery 4-0 to reach their first state title game. Platte’s run ultimately came up one game short of a championship in a 3-1 loss to Dell Rapids PBR, as the Killer Tomatoes’ season ended with a 14-8 record. ADVERTISEMENT Continuing its ascent of the Football Championship Subdivision ranks, the University of South Dakota followed a quarterfinal trip in 2023 with the program’s first-ever semifinal appearance in the Division I era in 2024. It was one of a collection of D-I firsts for the Coyotes, who also won a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference crown for the first time. USD’s campaign ended with a 31-17 loss at Montana State on Dec. 21. After 11 seasons roaming the Corn Palace sidelines, DWU men’s basketball coach Matt Wilber moved on to a coaching position with the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury in March, and Kevin Williamson was hired as the new head coach of Dakota Wesleyan men’s basketball in May. Wilber finished with a DWU-record 224 wins for the Tigers in his tenure, including a trip to the NAIA championship game in 2015. The new era is off to a good start under Williamson. The Tigers are 10-3 with their final non-conference game of the regular season scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Corn Palace against former Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Jamestown. The same can be said for Tiger football, where new coach Alex Kretzschmar was named as the new coach in February after Ross Cimpl moved to the athletic director job. It was a rocky start for the Tigers, with an 0-4 mark at the end of September but DWU rallied to win four of its final seven games. ADVERTISEMENT March was good again for the Dakota Wesleyan University women’s basketball team, which made some noise in the NAIA tournament as a No. 7 seed in 2024. The Tigers had 20 wins to its name when it earned an at-large bid after a top-four finish in the GPAC tournament. But DWU was unranked in the final top-25 poll of the season, and the Tigers traveled to Dubuque, Iowa, where they vanquished Rust University in the first round and then knocked off No. 5-ranked and No. 2-seeded Clarke University 78-72 to advance to the 16-team final bracket in Sioux City, Iowa. Powered by GPAC freshman of the year Emma Yost’s 28 points, DWU handed the Pride — who were the 2023 national champions — only their third loss of the season. The run ended on March 22 when the Tigers lost 87-80 to Cumberlands of Kentucky in the NAIA round of 16 but it was DWU’s first time winning multiple NAIA tournament games since reaching the national semifinals in 2019. This season, the Tigers are 10-3 and ranked No. 17 nationally. The year 2024 has witnessed significant milestones in China-Zimbabwe cooperation in the agriculture sector, a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economy. Trade between the two sides increased, while China’s support for Zimbabwe’s technical expertise and human resources development in the agriculture sector also expanded. According to the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency, a national investment promotion body, the agriculture sector sustains more than 60 percent of Zimbabwe’s population, provides 63 percent of raw materials for the manufacturing sector, generates 30 percent of export earnings, and contributes 15 percent to gross domestic product. In a bid to further open China’s market to Zimbabwean agricultural products, a trade protocol on the export of Zimbabwean avocados was inked during Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s state visit to China in September, ahead of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. Rodwell Choto, an avocado farmer from Bindura, Mashonaland Central Province, is among those preparing to meet the expected surge in demand from China. “Exports to China will give us foreign currency, our economy will grow, and our livelihoods will improve,” Choto told Xinhua in a recent interview, noting that avocado farmers are ramping up production. According to the Horticultural Development Council, an organization representing horticultural exporters in Zimbabwe, the Southeast African country is projected to produce a record 6,000 metric tons of avocados in 2024, with its avocado industry set to expand the growing area from the current 1,500 hectares to 4,000 hectares by 2030. This builds on earlier successes, including a 2022 trade agreement enabling the export of fresh citrus to China, which saw its first shipment in 2023. “This is a chance for African agriculture now to become part of the global food value chain,” said Christopher Mutsvangwa, politburo member and secretary for information and publicity at the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) party. Zimbabwe’s tobacco sub-sector has also flourished in 2024, bolstered by China’s market access. Tobacco, an important economic activity and a major foreign currency earner for Zimbabwe, Africa’s largest tobacco producer, saw exports to China rise 38.3 percent to 790 million U.S. dollars in the first nine months of 2024, accounting for 40.6 percent of Zimbabwe’s total exports to China, according to data released by the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe. The overall trade figures between Zimbabwe and China grew 25.6 percent to 3 billion dollars in the same period, the Chinese embassy added. Despite these significant milestones this year, a severe drought has caused crop failures and livestock losses, greatly undermining the agriculture sector. In response, China launched a project to drill 300 boreholes in four provinces of the country. “These boreholes will not only provide safe water to the affected community, but will also serve as a stepping stone towards resilience building in view of the current El Nino-induced drought, and will also save the lives of our livestock which is also in dire need of water,” said Zimbabwe’s Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities Daniel Garwe. China’s support extends beyond infrastructure to human resource development. Collaborative efforts have focused on capacity building and technical assistance to enhance agricultural productivity. As part of this initiative, Zimbabwean officials and professionals have attended seminars and workshops in China, equipping them with skills to modernize agriculture. Jotamu Dondofema, director of agricultural education in the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, and Rural Development, is among the officials who attended a seminar on the construction of green, low carbon, and circular economic systems in China this year. “This program has already yielded significant benefits. We have witnessed large numbers of successfully trained personnel, improved technologies in the agricultural value chains, the establishment of renewable energy sources and systems, and information and technology-sharing platforms anchoring capacity-building initiatives. These efforts have enhanced the employability and competitiveness of Zimbabwean professionals while also promoting the adoption of green technologies and sustainable practices,” Dondofema said.
